Jesuit High School

The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued

support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout our 50 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition.

The advertisements in this booklet were sold by the Jesuit Booster Club to help support the students and the programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Booster Club are, in great part, responsible for our school’s continued development and success.

Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent, young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.

Policy of Non-DiscriminationJesuit High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national origin or disability to the rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, employment or other school administered programs.

Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignation values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community.

Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God: that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

Dear JHS Fans,

Welcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your

enthusiasm and your generosity. Please accept our thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community. Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (We like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it all for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given? All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words but by our works. To our student-athletes, we encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches and teachers. To our parents, coaches and teachers, we encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, we encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stand, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are. Our sports success over the years has come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder, become more skillful and give opportunity to show all who come to see our teams play what is possible when talent and desire combine in response to challenge. We welcome you and all your fans to our campus. Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. And to our JHSBooster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs.

May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

Dear Parents, Friends and Fans of Jesuit,

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year, as Jesuit High School celebrates our 50th Anniversary. I am looking forward to another year of Jesuit Athletics and would

also like to welcome the Class of 2017 to Jesuit. I hope that many of you decide to become involved with our athletic program along with the many other incredible co-curricular opportunities offered by Jesuit High School.

Last year was another successful one for Jesuit Athletics. Our Varsity teams captured six Delta River League titles, and six teams (Soccer, Golf-D1 North & Masters, Swim-ming & Diving, Tennis and Track & Field) won Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, while Rugby captured the 2013 California State Championship and the National Championship in Elkhart, Indiana.

I would like to again call your attention to the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” program, which is based on good sportsmanship. I am extremely proud of the way our school community treats both officials and our guests from other schools. It is important that we continue to model that respectful behavior for our students to witness.

Furthermore, I’d like to recognize the efforts and the support of the Booster Club, especially Boosters President, Scott Hamilton, Volunteer Coordinator Jamila Masarweh. Their coordination of volunteers to work at all of the home athletic events makes it possible for our coaches and staff to concentrate on the games. I urge all of you to be a part of the Jesuit Booster Club and become involved with our school’s co-curricular programs. I’d like to express my gratitude for our game staff: Announcer Tim Fleming ’77; Scoreboard Operator Mark Hilder ’80; and Chain Gang Coordinators John ’70 and Ellie Meissner for their continued support of Jesuit Football.

Finally, please support our many patrons who are advertised in these pages and have signs placed at our athletic venues during our games and matches. Your sponsorship enables us to purchase many needed items for our teams and student-athletes in order to provide them with the finest equipment and facilities possible as they represent Jesuit High School through our sports programs.

On behalf of our coaching staff, Assistant Director of Athletics Ross Evans and Administrative Assistant Athletic Director Robin Cummings, I want to thank you for your continued support of Jesuit High School. We look forward to serving you this year and hope you enjoy the athletic experience at Jesuit.

Sincerely,

Chris Fahey ’92Director of Athletics

As a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory high school, we are committed to the

excellence of our broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice.

The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

The Marauders return 29 lettermen from the 2012 team, with several returning to key positions on both offense and defense. Jesuit looks to add depth and competition for

starting jobs from the 20 Juniors that finished 9-0-1 as Sophomore a year ago.

Jesuit Football is excited about the 2013 season, as the effort and work output has been tremendous throughout the “off-season” and prepared the Marauders for the grueling Delta River League (DRL). In addition, the Marauders will square-off against neighborhood rivals, Rio American and El Camino, before battling Christian Brothers in the 43rd Annual Holy Bowl. Jesuit will finish off their pre-season against Laguna Creek and Franklin of Elk Grove before beginning DRL play in October.

Players and coaches continue to work hard to create an identity called the “Marauder Way.”

Identity + Character + Community = Team

Identity is created through mental & physical toughness, unity as a group and a commitment to working hard every day. Character reflects each player’s willingness to be honest, communicate and listen to both coaches and fellow teammates. Community is developed by gaining trust, working hard to fill a role on the team, being supportive of each other regardless of circumstances and pride in being a Marauder.

The Marauders have worked hard to challenge each other on and off the field, and continue to grow as a team. Look for the Marauders to play with passion, energy and intensity in 2013, as they represent the Jesuit community during the 50th Anniversary of the school.

• Do people seem to mumble more frequently?• Do you hear but not understand especially in noisy places? If so, you may be 1 in 10 Americans suffering from gradual hearing loss. Hearing loss now affects more baby boomers than people over the age of 70. But the fastest growing rate of hearing loss is occurring in people under the age of 30. The Jesuit High School Cross Country Team boasts its deepest contingent in years for the 2013 season. Aided by three talented Freshmen, the 2012 squad placed third in the

section and qualified for the California State Meet for the first time in two years where the squad placed 18th. Despite graduating four Seniors, the Marauders return four of its top seven and a Sophomore class that was ranked No. 2 in the state in 2012 and will look to improve upon last season’s performance.

The Marauders captured the 2012 Delta River League title over Oak Ridge for its 38th league title overall and look to stand atop the podium once again in 2013. Rivals Oak Ridge, Sheldon and Folsom graduate a majority of their varsity squads, but bring depth from the Frosh-Soph level to challenge the Marauders for the title. At the section level, the Marauders are projected to finish in the top three in Division II based on returnees from the 2012 section meet. They will battle reigning champion Del Campo and Granite Bay for the SJS title and one of three berths to the state meet.

Tristyn Martin ’14, a four-year varsity performer, will look to lead the young squad back to the state meet in 2013 after spending the 2012 season consistently as the No. 2 runner behind all-section performer Chris Goode ’13. Martin is the No. 4 returner in the section and placed 13th at the 2012 section meet. Also leading the group will be Andrew Brown ’14. Despite being hampered by injury for the last Cross Country season, Brown roared back with a 4:33 in the 1600m during the track season. Andrew Huitt ’15 had a strong track season with a 9:41 best in the 3200m event and will be supported by 800m specialists Cristian Hernandez ’15 and Jacob Iritani ’15. Along with the upperclassmen, the Marauders boast 12 returners who have run under 5:00 for the 1600m distance including seven Freshmen. As Freshmen, the trio of Sean Kurdy ’16, Kyle Guthrie ’16 and Michael Lackner ’16 made an immediate impact on the varsity squad in 2012 and will lead fellow talents Patrick Cummings ’16, Matthew Sickman ’16, James Wilde ’16 and Nick Siino ’16 as one of the best Sophomore classes in the state. Also hoping to make an immediate impact is incoming Freshman Brendan Jones ’17, the 2012 PAL Cross Country champion who broke the course record at last year’s PAL championships.

The Cross Country program boasts nine state titles, 27 section titles and two appearances at the national meet under the guidance of Head Coach Walt Lange, now in his 44th year of coaching at Jesuit. Coach Lange is supported by assistant coaches David Zielke (22nd season), Tom Witzgall ’98 (8th season) and Nick Lai (3rd season). Jesuit Cross Country kicked off the 2013 season with the annual Meeting of the Marauders at Ancil Hoffman Park on Saturday, August 24.

After a one-year hiatus from competing and winning two CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, the 2013 Jesuit Water Polo Team is preparing for another run at the

CIF crown. Head Coach Boyd Lachance, returning to the high school scene after coaching 11 seasons at UC Berkeley, has a squad he feels can return to the CIF finals after the Marauders came up short last season.

“Leading the Marauders to the top will be a collective effort by the entire team,” said Lachance. “I’m not one to identify and highlight who our decorated student-athletes are, but our team is in a continuous learning process, and I’m very excited and proud that they are embracing the new challenges presented.”

The team has a solid balance of younger and older student-athletes, however the older student-athletes don’t possess a lot of high-level experience. The core of this team will be lead from a blend of our Seniors, many Juniors and potentially two to three underclassmen.

The season will be highlighted by home games against Gunn, El Camino, Laguna Creek and Davis, away games at the S&R Tournament in Irvine, the State Tournament at Bellarmine, St. Mary’s and the Rio Americano Invitational.

This team is hungry to prove they belong back in the conversation and want to truly be a part of the great legacy of Jesuit Water Polo.

“I feel that this group has the potential to do it this season while many are saying we are in a rebuilding phase,” said Lachance. “It will be very satisfying to see our growth between August and hopefully mid-November.”

The 2013 Varsity Soccer Team hopes to continue the success of last year’s squad. The 2012 squad won the Delta River League with a record of 10-0-0. This team finished the

season as the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Champions (10th Section Title - a Section record for Soccer), while posting an overall record of 27-1-1. In addition, the Marauders received a NSCAA Region Eight No. 1 ranking, a No. 2 National Ranking in the NSCAA National poll, and a #1 National Ranking by MaxPreps at seasons end. This team had the most difficult schedule in the country playing competition from Portland, St. Louis, New Jersey, and the Bay Area. Four Seniors moved on to college programs including Niko Hansen ’13 (New Mexico), Kaba Alkebulan ’13 (Cal Poly-SLO), Riley Harbour ’13 (UCSD), and Austin Burrows ’13 (Macalister). These Seniors join a long list of Marauders actively playing at the collegiate and professional levels.

This season’s team hopes to continue the Marauder tradition of excellence. The 2013 team is composed of a talented group of Seniors and Juniors boasting six returning starters and 12 returning players. Three Seniors are already committed to college soccer programs. Challenges will begin early with games against local talent like Granite Bay, Merced, Davis, University (SF) and Marin Academy (San Rafael). Jesuit will test their talents against out-of-state teams from Portland, Ore. to St. Louis, Mo. and more. Games include matches against Jesuit-Portland, Marquette in Missouri and ranked teams from Colorado, Illinois and Ohio. Hopefully, with unselfish play and hard work, the 2013 team will achieve the goal of another Section Title.

Both the Freshmen and Sophomores will combine efforts this year and continue their winning ways as they again hope to dominate non-league and league play. The JV will play with two teams–Red and Gold. Both teams will face tough competition in the Delta River League and in tough non-league play. The teams promise a bright future for Marauder Soccer.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor

Principles:1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”

2. It’s the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.”

3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible.

4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character.

5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators.

6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules.

7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents.

8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed.

9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical well-being of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressure to win.

10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school.

11. Everyone involved in competition including parents, spectators, associated study body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations.

59

Page 62: Jesuit High School Fall 2013 Sports Program

62

12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport.

13. Because of the powerful potential of sports as a vehicle for positive personal growth, a broad spectrum of school sports experiences should be made available to all of our diverse communities.

14. To safeguard the health of athletes and the integrity of the sport, school sports program must actively prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and performance enhancing substances, as well as a demand compliance with all laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and the use of drugs.

15. Schools that offer athletic programs must safeguard the integrity of their programs. Commercial relationships should be continually monitored to ensure against inappropriate exploitation of the school’s name or reputation. There should be no undue influence of commercial interests. In addition, sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue dependency on particular companies or sponsors.

16. The profession of coaching is a profession of teaching. In addition to teaching the mental and physical dimensions of their sport, coaches, through words and example, must also strive to build the character of their athletes by teaching them to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
