Most of us are quite fortunate. We have the power to use our 5 senses. We can hear, see, speak, touch, and smell. The challenge is to use our senses wisely. When we observe a person or situation, what do we see? Do we see the poverty of the street person we pass on the road? Do we hear the cries of the poor, the pleas of injustice, or do we close our ears because it is too painful to listen? Do we speak out when something is wrong or do we keep silent because it is much easier, even when we know that correc- tion, challenge or change is necessary? When we opened our senses, then we must respond to the challenge of St. James and avoid the temptation to discriminate. Sometimes it is education, sometimes it is appearance, and sometimes it is ones skin color, ethnic background or origin. We must do our best to see the whole picture, hear the entire story and speak the complete truth , no matter how difficult or challenging it may be. Let us not be spiritually blind, deaf or dumb to the cry of those less fortunate than ourselves. Let us not be indifferent, but rather let us use the gifts God has given us to give food to the hungry, and to those who have a hunger for justice. Miracle of Jesus: Jesus heals the blind and deaf. Our readings this weekend describe how God opens our senses, challenging us to use them wisely while never failing to act to correct social issues. The prophet Isaiah writes of how God will be ever present to God’s people and will save them. The God of Light opens the eyes of the blind and the ears of the deaf. The maker of all things transforms all things, making them good and useful to all. In the Gospel, Jesus shows himself to be God, for he opens the ears and loosens the tongue of one coming to him for help. Those who witness this miracle are amazed and exclaim “ He has done everything well” Jesus’s action challenges those who witness it to open their senses so as to perceive the plight of those around them and courageously do what is necessary to assist. Do we speak out when something is wrong or do we keep silent because it is much easier, even when we know that correc-tion, challenge or change is necessary? When we opened our senses, then we must respond to the challenge of St. James and avoid the temptation to discriminate. Sometimes it is education, sometimes it is appearance, and sometimes it is one’s skin color, ethnic background or origin.
