Poor Thomas. Singled out from among the disciples because he refused to believe what they were telling him—that they had seen, in the flesh, their friend and their Lord, Jesus Christ. Can any of us really blame him? All of the disciples were terrified, crestfallen, hiding. But what of Thomas? Just where was he when Jesus appeared the first time to the group huddled in fear? He had gone “out”—out of the community where his faith had life. Maybe this was actually a blessing for Thomas and not the curse associated with the “doubting Thomas” moniker bestowed on him by tradition. Oh, the divine mercy of the Lord! Could Thomas be the forerunner of all of us who come in fragile hope and uncertainty to the Christian community, so beautifully described in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles? Could Thomas be an ultimate exemplar of the faith described in the First Letter of Peter? YOU SHOULD’VE BEEN THERE! Most of us have had the misfortune of missing something important simply by being absent, and then hearing about what happened. In today’s reading, unique to John’s Gospel, Thomas is the only apostle who was not around when Jesus appeared to his friends for the first time after his death and resurrection. They were frightened and grieving, not knowing what would happen to them. Remember, they found themselves to be fugitives, seemingly guilty by association with a criminal executed by government officials. Suddenly, Jesus was with them, beaming peace and mercy to his fragile followers. What joy! What a shock, too! We will never know why Thomas had left their hiding place. All we know is that he returned to wild stories about Jesus being alive after dying a brutal death. He must have thought that the other apostles in their grief had a shared delusion of what they wished were true. When Thomas finally saw Jesus, he gave what is

considered the most profound profession of faith: “My Lord and my God!” In his tender mercy, Jesus ministered to Thomas by helping him to see for himself. WE WALK BY FAITH But what of us? The early Christian community could only trust the words of these same apostles, the ones Thomas couldn’t believe, when they preached Jesus Christ risen from the dead. Who could believe what they said? The Holy Spirit, breathed upon the disciples in that first encounter, emanated so powerfully from them that they were able to convene seemingly utopian communities of faith. Filled with “divine mercy,” their lives became an evangelization to the world. And this is how we too are sent out, like the disciples, filled with the Holy Spirit and bearing the Lord’s peace and mercy to a troubled, suffering world. The wounds of Jesus are very real today in the needy and broken. May we always work to bind up those wounds wherever we find them. Today’s Readings: Acts 2:42–47; Ps 118:2–4, 13–15, 22–24; 1 Pt 1:3–9; Jn 20:19–31 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Mother’s Day Mass Cards

Mother’s Day is coming and we will be offering Mother’s Day Mass cards again this year. These cards may be purchased for mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and spiritual mothers, both living and deceased. Although we’re not gathering at Mass together just yet, requests for cards can be made on our website through May 4. The Mothers Day cards will then be mailed to you at an address you provide for us. In years past, we’ve displayed the names of our mothers on a poster in the church sanctuary. At this time, we simply don’t know if Illinois’ stay at home order will be lifted on May 1 and we will be able to gather together at Mass on Mother’s Day. However, we will still create a poster that be can displayed online and, when the stay at home order is lifted, in the sanctuary as well.

Just Checking In...

Deacon Kevin and Ellie Joyce have begun calling our parishioners, checking in to see how you are weathering this crisis, letting you know they are in our prayers, and that you can keep up with the parish through the parish Facebook page and parish website. You may have already received a call from us, if not, you can expect to receive a call soon. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you!

Word on Fire Reflections

We hope you enjoyed the weekly Lenten reflections from Word on Fire that we had been sending via Flocknote. While we are still unable to gather, we want to provide as many opportunities as possible for your spiritual growth. That is why we'll be continuing to send Word on Fire content. Bishop Barron has a new six-part series of short reflections called "He is Risen!". If you are not signed up for Flocknote, you can do so at stbernadetteparish. flocknote.com.

Divine Mercy Sunday

Each year, on the Second Sunday of Easter, the Church celebrates the Sunday of Divine Mercy. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning His Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. St. Faustina’s Diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy be observed. On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. This year’s Divine Mercy Sunday marks both the 20th year of the elevation of St. Faustina to Sainthood, and the origination of “Divine Mercy Sunday”.

We invite you to join with us and pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. We will have video posted on our Facebook page and website that you can use to guide your prayer. This website has more information about how to pray the chaplet: www.thedivinemercy.org/message/devotions/pray-the-chaplet

If you do not have an image of the Divine Mercy, you can find and print one at: TheDivineMercy.org/DivineMercyImage You can even bless the image (by virtue of Baptism, the Church allows you to invoke a blessing yourself in the absence of a priest) by making the sign of the cross over it and saying, "Oh, Lord, I seek your blessing upon this image, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen."

Divine Mercy Prayer You expired, O Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls and an ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You. Amen. Text compilation: © Urszula Grzegorczyk. Spiritual Communion

While the church remains closed during the shelter in place order, we are nonetheless painfully aware that being cut off from the sacramental life of the church, especially the Eucharist, creates a great hardship for the Church and Her people, most especially now during Holy Week. However, we make this sacrifice for the common good, convinced that we, like all citizens, have a responsibility in preventing the spread of COVID-19. In fact, doing so will ensure that our people can return to the sacraments as soon as possible. We remind everyone to do the best they can to practice spiritual communion and to use this prayer in the absence of the Eucharist: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

Village Pantry

If you or someone you know is in need, please know that the Village Pantry is here for Evergreen Park residents. If you are a senior, or a higher risk individual, and worry about going to the grocery story, please know the pantry is here for you as well. The Village Pantry is open every Friday from 9:30am-1:30pm. It is located at 2700 W. 98th Place. They are even offering drive-up service. As Mayor Sexton put it in a recent message to village residents, sent through email and posted on the village’s website, “This is available to every Evergreen Park resident who needs help! … This is a time and situation that is completely out of the ordinary. There is no shame in using the Pantry. This is why it is there!” (The Mayor is delivering occasional messages via email. Visit the village website to sign up: http://www.evergreenpark-ill.com/)

Sunday, Apr 19, 2020SOLEMNITY OF THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER; DIVINE MERCY SUNDAYEmpty chairs, full heartsOn this day 25 years ago, 168 people died in the bombing of theAlfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Thefootprint of the building is now ringed by trees providing a livingthreshold for ground made sacred by grief. A surviving wallrecords the names of those who lived through the tragedy, while aField of Empty Chairs recalls the adults and children whoperished. Violence created the need for this memorial. But thechairs, which become vigil lights of memory through each night, attest that a light shines in every darkness. Be that light.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 2:42-47; 1 Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31 (43).“They devoted themselves . . . to the breaking of the bread and tothe prayers.”

Monday, Apr 20, 2020EASTER WEEKDAYGive life the last wordToday is the 21st anniversary of the Columbine school shooting. How to cope with the sorrow and outrage of that incident and somany similar ones? We begin to rebuild our society when weallow the Spirit to flow through us and see the face of God inothers. “Every human being . . . , however weak, is created ‘inthe image and likeness of God,’” Pope Benedict XIV said inCameroon in 2009. “Every person must live! . . . Death will neverhave the last word!” Acknowledge the right of those around youto live, no matter their differences, their weakness or strengths, their failings or successes.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 4:23-31; John 3:1-8 (267). “You do notknow where [the wind] comes from or where it goes; so it is witheveryone who is born of the Spirit.”

Tuesday, Apr 21, 2020MEMORIAL OF ANSELM, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCHOur Redeemer, in the fleshIn 1098, Saint Anselm wrote the treatise “Why the God-Man?” tochampion a core Christian tenet: the Incarnation—the belief thatJesus was both fully human and fully divine. Incarnation is a bigdeal. Nearly every heresy tackled by the Early Church concernederrant beliefs about Jesus’ true nature. No, we don’t believe thatJesus was merely human (Arianism) or that he was all divine, only pretending to be human (Docetism). We believe that thesecond person of the Trinity took on human flesh to save us.Imagine that!

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 4:32-37; John 3:7b-15 (268). “You must beborn from above.”

Wednesday, Apr 22, 2020EASTER WEEKDAYGive your sister some breathing space"Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is likea sister with whom we share our life. . . . This sister now cries outto us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by ourirresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God hasendowed her." Thus opens Laudato Si’, Pope Francis' encyclical"On Care for Our Common Home." Do we really want to live in

darkness? Shine a light on what each of us can do to clean up theplanet. And plant a tree for good measure!

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 5:17-26; John 3:16-21 (269). “The lightcame into the world, but people preferred darkness to light.”

Thursday, Apr 23, 2020MEMORIAL OF GEORGE, MARTYRFace the dragonThe legend of Saint George the dragon slayer is a famous one, butit’s not as rooted in historical fact as is the manner of hismartyrdom. Yes, George had the courage to face a monster—butthe monster was the Roman emperor Diocletian, whosepersecution of Christians in the early 300s martyred not onlyGeorge but well-known saints Sebastian, Agnes, Lucy, andPhilomena, among countless others. George, a soldier, remainedjoyous even when tortured for his belief. What negative influencesthreaten your own joyous practice of Christian faith today—andare you willing to face them, as George was?

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 5:27-33; John 3:31-36 (270). “One who isof the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things.”

Friday, Apr 24, 2020MEMORIAL OF FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN, PRIEST, MARTYRClothes make the saintHolding a law degree from Germany, Fidelis of Sigmaringen(1577-1622) was known as the “poor man’s lawyer” whosometimes would give his destitute clients the clothes off his back. But he tired of the adversarial nature of the law profession, so hejoined the Capuchin Friars. Ordained a priest in 1612, Fidelis wassent to Switzerland to convert Calvinist reformers. In violentreaction to his successful efforts, Fidelis was set upon andmurdered. He was canonized in 1746 by Pope Benedict XIV.Fidelis means “faithful” in Latin. Exercise your faith today bydonating clothes to the poor in memory of Fidelis.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 5:34-42; John 6:1-15 (271). “This is trulythe Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.”

Saturday, Apr 25, 2020FEAST OF MARK, EVANGELISTWrite the Good News with the ink of your lifeMark was an early follower of Jesus but not one of the 12apostles. Most scholars think that he was the “John who is calledMark” referenced in Acts 12:12 who joined in mission work withPaul and Barnabas. Today’s first reading mentions that he had aspecial sonlike relationship with Peter. Beyond that, little isknown except that he used the gifts he had been given to writethe shortest and earliest gospel a few decades after Jesus’ death. His gospel became the inspiration for Matthew and Luke to writetheirs. How will those who come after you take inspiration fromyour life and the way you shared the Good News?

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Peter 5:5b-14; Mark 16:15-20 (555). “Go intothe whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation.”
