During Passover I visited a young woman who was beginning a course of chemotherapy to treat her cancer. Our tradition provides many ways to be with, and present to, someone as she faces the challenges following a life-changing diagnosis. The ability to provide support at such times is part of what makes being a Rabbi rewarding.
While I was at the hospital something unexpected happened. As I was
walking around the cancer treatment floor, a woman, who appeared to be in her 70's, beckoned for me to come over.
Remarkably, this woman, whose husband was receiving a chemotherapy infusion, saw me with my yarmulke and was calling out "Moadim L'Simcha", "Times of Joy", (The customary greeting during Passover). As if referring to "Times of Joy" on a cancer treatment floor wasn't enough, the reason she asked me to come over was to ask if I (a person obviously not there for treatment) wanted some of the Kosher for Passover snacks that she had brought.
Her husband was a patient and she was offering me food. The injunction at the beginning for the Seder, "Let all who are hungry come and eat...", was obviously one that was not taken lightly by this angel. I told her that she was the sweetest, gentlest person I had met in a long time.
Her unsolicited kindness caused me to think. Opportunities are always presented to do good and to make the world a better place. Being a hero does not require one to leap tall buildings, or to climb walls like a spider. This person could have sat there with her husband and ignored the rest of the world around her. And she would have been justified in doing so. However, she chose instead to go out of her way to care for a stranger. She was not just a hero. She was a mensch.

YAHRZEITS FOR NEXT
WEEK
These names will be read at services on May 6, 2016
Each night, from the second Seder until Shavuot, for 49 nights, we count the Omer. In the Rabbinic tradition we count in anticipation of receiving the Torah on Shavuot. Some believe that we do this in order to receive little pieces of the Torah at a time because, if we receive it all at once, it would be overwhelming.
I would like to suggest that we use each of the 49 nights as an opportunity to think of a little something we might be able to do on the next day to make the world a better place.
Make a promise to Smile at someone, to hold a door, to buy someone a coffee, or, like the angel at the hospital, to offer a stranger a bite to eat. Keep it small, but do it every day from now until Shavuot which, this year, begins on the evening of Saturday, June 11th. Perhaps our daily mini-tzedaka projects will have an impact on the larger world around us. Whatever the result, I guarantee that each of us will feel better for the effort.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Independence Day, Israel's national holiday, marks Israel's Declaration of Independence with the end of the British Mandate. It is the only full holiday in the calendar decreed by law without a tradition of hundreds or thousands of years. It marks the day in which David Ben-Gurion, the state's first prime minister, declared the country's independence in 1948.

BOOK CLUB &
REVIEW
Get a head start this winter by reading the first book of the summer season. "A Remarkable Kindness" by Diana Bletter will be reviewed at our kick-off club get-together on June 14th at 10:30 AM.
Set in Israel, four women forge a friendship that sustains them as they come to terms with love and loss, and the
outbreak of war. Their intimate bond is strengthened by their participation in a traditional ritual that closes the circle of life. As their lives are slowly transformed, each finds unexpected strength and resilience.
Helen Benjamin is chairing this project.
