From t he Board PresidentThe past year has been filled with change as I finish this term as president of JCS. We are grateful for the dedicated service of our staff who have made the work of JCS truly possible. But it has not been without a bittersweet transition as we had to bid a fond farewell to our former Executive Director, Lynda Yeotis, who left JCS in April after 22 years of dedicated service in order to seek other opportunities.

As other non-profits in Genesee County have been forced to close, we have held steadfast in our service to our community. Our transition in leadership was made smoother due to the assistance of the Flint Jewish Federation who allowed us to welcome Steven Low as Interim Executive Director, in addition to his duties at FJF. Our staff also saw Jyoti Khurana, Senior Services Coordinator, expand her work to full time in order to maintain the quality of our dedicated work with seniors.

The past year has also seen one of the most supportive and engaged boards I’ve had the pleasure of working with. It is with their continued dedication to the mission of JCS that I feel positive about our future ability to serve the seniors in our community. In part, due to their efforts, this year also saw our fourth successful year of fundraising with “From the Borscht Belt to Bollywood,” which was well attended due to the efforts of our staff, board and many community volunteers.

While JCS will continue to serve Flint and Genesee County seniors through our current important services, our work will always be in transition, as we seek new and meaningful ways to serve our community. We are grateful for the wider community support that has allowed us to continue with this mission.

    Sincerely,

Mara Jevera Fulmer, E d.D. President, JCS Board of Directors

The People We ServeJCS serves people from all walks of life. People of all backgrounds are welcome to participate in our programs and services. Our mission is to provide social services and support for Jewish, ethnic and general populations.

JCS specializes in social services for older adults. Many of our clients do not have the means to pay for services.

JCS seeks to improve the quality of life for aging adults by providing access to services centered on health, nutrition, and socialization.

Lack of transportation and poor health often lead to isolation for seniors in our community. Many have no immediate family in the area that can help them meet their health and dietary needs. JCS provides these seniors with opportunities to make human connections and access services that can help them maximize their independence.

JCS also offers specialized resettlement and acculturation services for immigrants.

We have developed expertise that helps immigrants overcome cultural and language barriers and become part of the larger community. Some of our clients have minimal English skills; however, when they attend lunch and participate in group activities, they are able to build positive relationships with people who speak their language and share common cultural experiences.

In addition, JCS offers services such as transportation, along with cultural, social and educational programs such as a book club, and other activities.
