Madison Hadassah presents HannahRosenthal on Sunday, Feb. 23, 1:00-3:00p.m. at Yorktown Estates CommunityRoom, 251 S. Yellowstone Drive (at thecorner of Mineral Point Road and Yellow-stone Drive). Those attending are asked tomake a suggested donation of $12.

How do you “choose how to make yourimpact on the world” given the thousandsof educational, medical, healthcare, humanrights, environmental, political and othercauses? And how do you decide when todonate, volunteer or speak out? Do yougive to the same groups year after year ordo you respond to everyone who asks? Orare you like many who find the vast calls

for help overwhelming?Over the next two months, Madison

Hadassah is holding two programs onthoughtful ways to choose causes and theforms of contribution. Our first programfocuses on a prime example of a cause thatmany of care about, but do not know howwe can help.

On February 23rd, Hannah Rosenthalwill present “Where is the Outrage:Women’s Healthcare in 2014.” Rosen-thal will speak about the urgency of pro-tecting women’s access to healthcare andfamily planning.

Hadassah’s stance is that limiting accessto important women's health and familyplanning services deprives women of theirright to make health care decisions pri-vately, in consultation with medical advice, and in accordance with their own religious, moral and ethical values. According toRosenthal, “Hadassah is one of the onlyvoices in our country advocating for com-prehensive health care for women, and forreproductive freedom.”

Rosenthal is a nationally recognizedleader who has served under two U.S.presidents. Under the Clinton Administra-tion, she served as Midwest Regional Di-rector of the U.S. Department of Healthand Human Services. She also served asU.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Com-bat Anti-Semitism, is the former foundingExecutive Director of the WisconsinWomen’s Council, Director of theChicago Foundation for Women, and Head

of the Jewish Council. She is on the boardfor Americans for Peace Now. In 2005, shewas named one of the Forward 50, a list ofthe most influential Jews selected by TheForward newspaper. Rosenthal is currentlythe Chief Executive Officer of the Milwau-kee Jewish Federation.

On March 15th, Hadassah Shabbat Teafrom 1:00-3:00 p.m. will explore ways to“Choose How to Make Your Impact onthe World” with an impressive panel of

women who have devoted much of theirlives to philanthropy and volunteerism.Join us at the home of Diane Seder, 4525Fox Bluff Lane, Middleton, WI 53562.

On January 6,2014, 27 UW-Madisonstudents and two UWHillel staff members,Mickey Aziz Komarand Jennifer Jennings, left for a whirlwind 10-day bus tour of Israelwith UW Hillel. Thisyear’s Taglit BirthrightIsrael trip participantswere thrilled to set outon their first trip to Is-rael—and just beforethe record low temper-atures set in!

“Taglit” means“discovery” in He-brew, and the goal ofthe Birthright trip for each participant isdiscovery of his or her personal connectionto Jewish values and tradition, of Israel andits people, and of some of the many waysof being part of the larger Jewish commu-nity. Taglit Birthright Israel is an educa-tional program. Students toured, hiked, rode camels, and more, while expandingtheir understanding and appreciation of Is-rael’s history and contemporary Israeli life.

They also took part in wide-ranging discus-sions about Jewish identity, politics, reli-gion, and living.

This year’s tour began in Tzfat, the cen-ter of Jewish mysticism and an artists’colony. Students next headed north for ashort hike in the Tel Dan Nature Reserve, which is fed by the Jordan River. Duringtheir second full day in Israel—thebusiest—students spent time at the Kin-

neret cemetery wherethey learned about theearly Zionist pioneers. They then met their newfriends, Israeli soldierswho are part of the mif-gash program. GraceSchneck, a student fromMadison, describedmeeting her Israelipeers, “When I heardthat soldiers would bejoining us on our trip, Ithought it would be dif-ficult to integrate theminto the group. Instead Imet an amazing groupof Israelis and madeconnections I will havefor the rest of my life.”

Students and sol-diers visited the DeadSea, climbed Masada, and engaged in an en-ergetic conversationabout what they wouldeach sacrifice for free-dom. After a guidedmeditation in thedesert, everyone bed-ded down for the nightin Bedouin tents. When asked abouttheir whirlwind day,Ilana Katz said,“Masada was a veryspecial place to visit. Not only is there a lotof historical signifi-cance, but it is where Ibecame a Bat Mitzvah along with my Is-raeli cousin—who also joined us on thistrip. I felt proud to climb the mountain tostand where my ancestors took their livesrather than become slaves to the Romans.”

A highlight of the trip was meetingAvraham Infeld, president emeritus of Hil-lel: The Foundation of Jewish CampusLife, in Jerusalem, where students also vis-ited the kotel, the Old City, the shuk, andmore. “Entering into Jerusalem and look-ing over the first time is a moment I'll neverforget. Birthright has been a wonderful ex-perience,” said Lanni Sotocheck.

On the second to last day, everyone hadthe wonderful opportunity of helpingLeket, an Israeli volun-teer organization thatprovides food to thosein need, collect pro-duce from a farm. Thelast day in Tel Avivprovided a glimpse ofa big modern city in Is-rael and to experienceits culture and energy.

Since its inceptionin December 1999,Taglit-Birthright Israel

Jewish Congregationsfor Social Justice

Madison’s joint synagogue social ac-tion organization, now known as JewishCongregations for Social Justice (JCSJ),continues successfully to recruit andplace new volunteers through Friends ofEmerson School.

Math MentorsThe Emerson School math mentor

program has been launched with manymentors beginning to meet with students.Currently, 18 mentors are working with25 students in grades 2-5. Lisa Stein, math specialist at Emerson, has found itdelightful to meet the volunteers andpartner them with the students. Bothadults and students are excited about theone-on-one meeting times--even lookingforward to the math practice.

The volunteers have a wide range ofexperiences/ability with math students, but all are earnest and sincere in their de-sire to build a relationship with the stu-dents. Emerson’s principal, mathspecialist, and teachers are very excitedabout the math mentor program. Teachers(even new teachers) are confident withthe content and activities to support men-tors.

One important aspect of the programat Emerson is the method they have cre-ated to evaluate the success of math men-toring. The goal of partnering volunteerswith students is to improve skills in un-derstanding of math facts. The teachersare currently re-assessing students in thearea of fact understanding for mid-yearmeasures/report cards. Teachers and stu-dents will then set goals for facts basedon this new evaluation. Appropriate rou-

tines and activities are already developedto enhance students’ skills, and volun-teers were trained on these activities. Many students will need extra one-to-onepractice to "break the code". Others areworking on becoming more fluent withcomposing and decomposing numberswithin 10 or 20 (additon and subtraction)and yet others are working on skip count-ing to become fluent with multiplication. In the spring, students will be evaluatedagain to determine the outcome of themath mentoring program.

There are still several slots available,so if you are interested in serving as amath mentor, contact Sherie Sondel, member Temple Beth El.

10/Madison Jewish News February 2014

For more than two decades, the Centerfor Jewish Studies has enriched the com-munity with a range of academic program-ming and outreach events, includingseminars, lectures, symposia, film screen-ings, and multi-day events such as theGreenfield Summer Institute and the bien-nial Conney Conference on Jewish Arts.Yet with the notable exception of the Con-ney Project, little of the Center’s program-ming has been in the arts. Thanks togenerous grants from the Jewish Federa-tion of Madison Innovation Panel, the Uni-versity of Wisconsin Anonymous Fund, and more than a dozen additional campusand community partners, the Center forJewish Studies will offer a series of artisticprograms over the course of the Spring2014 semester: an art exhibition, a theatri-cal performance, and three concerts.

The Semester of the Arts kicks off onFebruary 6 with an art exhibition at UWHillel. Chernobyl: Behind the Back ofTime explores the region around Cher-nobyl from a Jewish perspective. Through-out the exhibition, Dresden-based artistMarion Kahnemann asks questions of his-tory, both before and after Chernobyl, ofour use of language, and of our approachto diversity and ideology. The opening re-ception—with remarks from the artist—will take place on Thursday, February 6from 5:00-7:00 p.m.; the artwork will re-main up for viewing at Hillel (611 Lang-don Street) through April 6.

In March, the series turns from visualart to theatre in a production of AndreiMalaev-Babel’s one-man show Babel:How it was Done in Odessa. Isaac Babelwas recognized during his life as one of thegreatest prose writers of the twentieth cen-tury, and his works have influenced the

writings of American authors such as SaulBellow, Philip Roth, and Grace Paley. In1939, at the peak of his career, on Stalin’sorders, Babel was arrested by the KGB oncharges of espionage, tortured, tried and fi-nally, in 1940, executed in the Lubyankaprison in Moscow. His unpublished man-uscripts were confiscated and are stillmissing. Babel: How It Was Done InOdessa is a tribute to Isaac Babel by hisgrandson, actor-artist Andrei Malaev-Babel, performing five of Babel’s storiesin this solo performance. The performancewill take place on Sunday, March 2, at2:00 p.m., in Lathrop Hall, H’Doubler Per-formance Space (1050 University Av-enue).

The series concludes with three con-certs – two in Madison, one in Milwau-kee – by Fusions, a trio featuringUW-Madison professor of cello Uri Vardi, and Israeli musicians Taiseer Elias (oud)and Menachem Wiesenberg (piano). Theinternationally acclaimed artists of Fusionsaim to highlight the connections and com-monalities between Arab and Israeli folkand art music, which are rarely heard to-gether. The program includes works byMasut Jamil Bey, Max Bruch, JanRadzynski, and Menachem Wiesenberg. The concerts will take place on April 5 at8:00 p.m. in Mills Recital Hall (455 N.Park Street); April 6 at noon at the ChazenMuseum (750 University Avenue); andApril 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the RubensteinPavilion in Milwaukee (1400 N. ProspectAvenue). The Madison Fusions Concertsare presented by the Mosse/WeinsteinCenter for Jewish Studies and the JewishFederation of Madison.

Curious Minds, Jewish HeartsAn elementary school serving fam-

ilies from all branches of Jewish life,MJCDS students build both a love oflearning and a profound connection toJewish life and heritage. A challeng-ing and inspiring dual curriculum ingeneral and Jewish studies includeshands-on learning and daily instruc-tion in Hebrew language.

Individual attention for each stu-dent, talented teachers and a warmcommunity of families are hallmarksof the MJCDS experience.

“MJCDS is a special place, whereeach child’s individuality is recog-nized and prized, and where parentsand teachers are all part of a commu-nity dedicated to helping our childrenblossom,” says Dr. Hanna Grol-Prokopczyk, whose daughter is analumna of the school.

“The bilingual curriculum, alongwith great science, math, and arts in-struction are major assets. I don’t thinkthere is a better school in Madison. The teachers and head of school are

fully and enthusiastically committed tohelping each child grow and learn, andthe very small class sizes allows aunique level of creativity and spon-taneity,” she says.

From hands-on science experi-ments to student-led book discussionsto explorations of Jewish texts andmodern Hebrew language studies, stu-dents pursue subjects in ways thatchallenge their intellect and feed theircuriosity.

In the academic environment atMJCDS – where students are encour-aged to ask questions and to becomecritical thinkers – the desire to learn isan innate result of a many-layered cur-riculum. Academic topics are exploredin depth, while connections betweensubjects are emphasized, leading to arich understanding of materials andconcepts.

NEW YORK—Taglit-Birthright Israelsaid recently that it was expanding its pro-gram eligibility to now include those youngadults who had previously visited Israel aspart of a peer trip when they were younger. The organization said the reason for thechange in policy was based on an educa-tional assessment that those who may havevisited as a teenager would gain a signifi-cantly greater understanding and attach-ment to Israel through the Taglit-Birthrightexperience as a young adult.

Beginning with the Summer 2014 reg-istration that opens on Feb. 19th, applicantsbetween the ages of 18-26 who had made aprior visit to Israel on an organized peer tripbefore they reached the age of 18 years oldmay now apply. The organization estimatesthat the expansion will allow thousandsmore to benefit from the Taglit- BirthrightIsrael’s program. To register, visitwww.BirthrightIsrael.com.

“I am delighted that the Taglit-BirthrightIsrael steering committee supports the de-cision that every young Jew is entitled to aneducational tour of Israel,” said Taglit-Birthright Israel CEO Gidi Mark. “I believethat the decision will strengthen the ties be-tween Israel and the Diaspora and will pro-vide tens of thousands of young Jews theknowledge needed in their efforts to presenta positive image of Israel to the world.”

Taglit-Birthright Israel offers the gift ofa free, 10-day trip to Israel for Jewish adultsbetween the ages of 18 to 26. The trip aimsto strengthen each participant’s identity asa Jew, to build an understanding, friendshipand lasting bond with the land and peopleof Israel, and to reinforce the solidarity ofthe Jewish people worldwide.

Taglit-Birthright Israel has sent morethan 350,000 young Jewish adults to Israelfrom more than 64 countries and from all50 U.S. states, including students fromnearly 1,000 North American college cam-puses. Attendees are immersed in an activeeducational experience that includes visitsto Jewish historical sites, history museums,Holocaust remembrance sites, the WesternWall, arts and culture programs as well astouring, hiking, discussions, social events, camel and jeep rides in the desert, andmore. The trip focuses on three main areas:the narratives of the Jewish people, contem-porary Israel, and the formative values ofJudaism.

Tzedakah means “righteous giving” in Hebrew. Performing the mitzvah of tzedakah is oneof the central pillars of Jewish tradition. In Judaism, tzedakah is much more than an act of

generosity; it’s an obligation and is part of seeking a just world.

Your contribution helps support more than 20 essential local agencies and programs,as well as rescue, relief, and development programs in Israel and 70 other countries,

including the Former Soviet Union, Eastern and Central Europe, Latin America, and Africa.

The successful 2013 Tzedakah Campaignwill help the JFM meet its critical mission ofbuilding a strong and unified Jewish commu-nity in order to ensure the survival, well-beingand continuity of the Jewish people in this area,in Israel and throughout the world. The processof raising and allocating these funds to over 20programs and services is a critical community-building activity. With each gift, we address somany causes that are important to our commu-nity: from feeding the hungry to funding Jewisheducation and elder care to supporting break-through initiatives like Taglit-Birthright Israel. The Jewish Federation also has a long trackrecord for carrying out big and bold initiativesand mobilizing great resources during times ofcrisis. We helped airlift thousands of EthiopianJews to safety in Israel. We helped rescue and re-settle more than one million Soviet Jews and weprovided lifesaving humanitarian relief duringthe recent natural disasters in Oklahoma and Col-orado. In fact, the impact of the Jewish Federa-tion of Madison here, in Israel, and around theworld is extraordinary, but not a surprise. To-gether, we ensure that the programs, institutions, and values that enrich the fabric of our Jewishcommunity remain vibrant and strong. Thestrength of our people is the power of commu-nity. Thank you for donating to the 2013Annual Tzedakah Campaign.

It takes a lot of courage to get upon stage and sing in front of othersbut that didn’t stop the singers at theHavdalah Karaoke event on Janu-ary 25th. Joining the Gomers on-stage for live-band Karaoke thesong selection ranged from Tom

Petty’s American Girl to a duet per-formance of Lo Yisa Goy El Goyand the performers were as youngas 3 years old.

The night began with Havdalahled by our community ShlichimMickey and Racheli Komar-Aziz.

Everyone enjoyed a pizza dinner, snacks and desserts. The GoodmanCommunity Center Loft providedan awesome space for everyone toplay pool, ping-pong, video games, card games and of course dance tothe live music. How did we fit all of

that fun into one evening? You’llhave to join us at future Family Ed-ucation events to find out! For moreinformation about the Jewish Fed-eration of Madison’s Family Edu-cation programs please see the boxon page 19.

Since getting to know Chabad, I can’tseem to get enough learning about Judaism.Growing up in a secular home where Fri-day night and Saturday started the week-end, I had no idea of what Shabbat reallymeant and certainly no idea of how to ob-serve it. Meeting the Matusof familychanged that. The first Shabbat meal I wasinvited to was amazing. This is what myBubby did as a girl in Russia before escap-ing the pogroms! As a young child I faintlyremember her lighting candles and hearingthe bruchas over the wine and bread, butthere was so much more; this was my an-cestral identity. The taste of that Shabbatmeal whet my appetite for more.

I had the good fortune of going to theNational Jewish Retreat which is an im-mersion learning experience for Jews of allbackgrounds—from people like me withlittle knowledge to the fully observant. From morning until night Judaism camealive in a way I had never known. Theteachers were Chabad Rabbis and Rebbet-zins from around the world. They openedthe door to the depth and richness of Ju-daism whether the class was about settinga Shabbat table, questions of medicalethics according to Torah, dissecting trac-tates of Talmud, or the impact of Jewishcomic book writers on culture in the late

1930’s, the topics were endless and theycaptivated me. This was my religion andthese were my people.

When Rabbi Avremel Matusof broughtthe Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) classesto Madison, I was delighted. JLI is thesponsor of the National Jewish Retreat, sohaving retreat caliber classes here in Madi-son gives us the opportunity for exception-ally enriching learning year round. Theclasses include a professional PowerPointand video, textbooks and engaging, inter-active presentations. Classes begin on Feb.3, and are on six consecutive Mondays. Not only is it enjoyable to be with othersin the community who like to learn aboutwho we are as Jews, Rabbi Avremel knows

how to tell a good joke!“To be a Jew in the Free World” is the

title of the next series of classes. The focuswill be on overcoming perceived incom-

patibilities between Judaism and modernsociety. This timely topic comes on theheels of the recent Pew Study which willsurely generate stimulating discussion. You can read about it for yourself atwww.myjli.com.

I hope to meet you there.

How I Used My MidrashaIncentive Award

Below is an article by Cassie Frankel, a 2012 Midrasha graduate and recipientof the Lawrence A. Weinstein Midrasha Incentive Award. Cassie is currently asophomore at McGill University. The Midrasha Incentive Award is given tograduating seniors who have completed all of the Midrasha requirements. Therecipients receive [up to] $2000 to use in furthering their Jewish education.

This year, I used my Midrasha Incentive Award to enroll in two Jewish Studiesclasses at McGill University, further fulfilling my Jewish Studies minor. I tookIntermediate Hebrew, a follow-up to the Beginner Hebrew class I used myMidrasha Incentive Award for last year. I also took a class that focused more onModern Jewish Studies called Political Expression in Israeli Song. I found theclass extremely interesting, especially considering my history as a Yonim dancerin elementary school. I learned a lot about the rich history of Israeli music, as wellas the background behind many of the songs I danced to in Yonim, like OfraHaza’s “Chai.” These Jewish Studies classes have been a great experience as theyhave allowed me to improve my Hebrew, broaden my knowledge of Jewish andIsraeli culture, and connect with Jewish peers at school. I am very thankful that Ihave had the opportunity to take these classes with the funding from my MidrashaIncentive Award.

Cassie Frankel, one of the 2012 Midrasha graduates.

Every year we ask people what kind of pro-grams they’d like to see at Lechayim. Onetopic that many people mentioned was how tomaintain a healthy brain while growing older. We will address that interest on Monday, Feb-ruary 3 when Joy Schmidt, Community Edu-cation Specialist of the Alzheimer’s &Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, will talkabout “Maintaining Brain Health.” We knowthat age and family history are risk factors inthe development ofdementia, but re-search is now show-ing that there areother factors, such asdiet and exercise, canbe influential. This in-teractive presentationwill keep us engagedas we learn, and Joypromises we’ll havefun.

We were meant to remember Dr. MartinLuther King, Jr. on January 27, but the extremecold prompted us to cancel that day. We arepleased that we were able to reschedule this

program to Monday, February 10 whenFranklynn Peterson will address the question,“What Would Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. SayToday?” Frank is a photo-journalist who spentmany years documenting the civil rights move-ment and was present at the 1963 March onWashington. He has received numerous awardsthroughout his career and has shown his pho-tographs in many exhibits. His work has ap-peared in magazines such as Popular Science,Parade, Sepia, Family Circle, McCall’s, travelmagazines and social journals. He recentlypublished his memoir, “Whitey Joins the Rev-olution: My Time in the Movement.”

We are all too aware that falling can impactone’s ability to live independently, and thatmany medicines are associated with falling.Professor Dave Mott of the UW-MadisonSchool of Pharmacy has been conducting re-search to see if modifying medicine use canprevent falling. On Monday, February 17Professor Beth Martin will present Dr. Mott’sresearch in her presentation, “Are Your Medi-cines Putting You at Risk for Falling?” Shewill address why older adults are at risk formedicine-related problems and what steps to

take to reduce fall risk. Dr. Martin is cur-

rently the coordinator of the Introductory Pro-fessional Practice Experience for the UW-Madison Doctor of Pharmacy program. From1998 – 2005 she directed the PharmacotherapyLabs for the entry-level Doctor of Pharmacydegree program. She has served as Director ofEducational Affairs for the Pharmacy Societyof Wisconsin. Her research interests includepharmacy services implementation and sus-tained provision, as well as the evaluation andassessment of educational programs. Dr. Mar-tin earned her BS in Pharmacy, and her MS andPh.D. in Social and Administrative Sciencesfrom the UW-Madison. She has received manyhonors in the field of Pharmacy education, in-cluding the1998-99 Teaching ExcellenceAward and the 1995 Young Pharmacist of theYear Award. She works closely with the Phar-macy students involved in the Wisconsin Soci-ety of Pharmacy Students Health Assessmentheld monthly at Lechayim.

We have another musical treat on Monday,February 24, something out of the ordinary:members of the UW-Madison Marching Bandwill perform for us! Lechayim member EunaStaniforth’s grandson Tony is a member of theband, and we have Tony and Euna to thank formaking this concert possible. Being in the bandis a huge commitment; students rehearse sev-eral times a week, with a new routine for eachgame and sometimes only four days to learn it.The band is known for its lively “Fifth Quarter”at football games, and when traveling to away-games, always impresses the other schools’fans. The Marching Band and the Varsity Bandare part of the School of Music, though only afew of their members are music majors. Fundsfor new instruments and uniforms do not comeout of the School of Music’s budget, but mustbe raised privately. While as of this writing theexact program is not known, it will certainly belively and a lot of fun!

Sitting down with Lori Edel-stein, you know you are in goodhands. Literally! You have hertotal attention. She holds yourarm, watches and listens withgreat concentration. She then talksto you about your blood pressure. For almost ten years Lori has vol-unteered to perform this service atLechayim.

She comes from afamily where astrong commitmentto helping otherswas the eleventhcommandment. Infact, during WWII,when her dad wasrejected from armyservice due to hispoor eyesight, hewent to Britain. Notonly was he able tojoin the army, hewas assigned todrive an ambulance. He became a phar-macist on returning. Her mother, who was a Navynurse, continued her career andalso became an avid cook. Shewas such an enthusiastic cook thatshe volunteered to cook for agen-cies in Bayside and Milwaukee, where they resided.

Lechayim is a perfect place forLori to volunteer. As an orthope-dic nurse Lori developed a great

love of caring for her elderly pa-tients, and healthy cooking is herpassion. In addition, Lori carrieson the volunteer legacy by prepar-ing meals for Porchlight, the RoadHome and of course, Food-a-Rama.

Her husband Gary is an engi-neer; her daughters are Kara, whoearned her BA in art and is nowstudying animation, and Rene,

who is an undergradat the UW-M. Theyare the main benefi-ciaries of Lori’s pas-sion for food. WhenLori considers hergood luck at meet-ing Gary by answer-ing an ad in Isthmusand reeling him inwith a deliciouschicken dinner, sheremains a firm be-liever in the powerof a good meal.

Lori’s love for artand music make her

a regular at museumsand concerts. When

she sees you, she has a readysmile and kind word. “I believe inpracticing kindness, it begetsmore kindness! Crabbiness begetsmore crabbiness and who wantsthat?”

Lori is now studying Hebrewfor her Bat Mitzvah. No doubt, herkindness will come through in herD'var Torah.

For Adam Steinberg — the 28-year-old doctor and Melbourne native who isone of the Joint Distribution Commit-tee’s (JDC) two 2014 Ralph I. GoldmanFellows in International Service — hisyearlong tour ofJDC’s workaround the globeis a bona fidegame-changer.

“It is makingme try to be a better Jew, a better person,a better doctor, a better humanitarian, abetter global citizen, and a better leader,”Steinberg said of the fellowship, whichis run through JDC Entwine. “All thoseelements really speak to the essence ofwhat the fellowship is.”

The Goldman Fellowship (sharedwith Steinberg this year by Sara Reef) isEntwine’s premier leadership opportu-nity — a paid, professional opportunityto live and work in several overseas lo-cations where JDC is active.

Though he intended to begin his timeabroad in St. Petersburg, Russia, Stein-berg’s plans changed when the devastat-ing Typhoon Haiyan struck thePhilippines and JDC mobilized to re-spond.

Steinberg was part of JDC’s initialcrisis evaluation team, which also in-cluded Danny Pins, a development andemployment expert; and Mike Attison,an emergency field medic and disasterrelief expert who has been part of JDC’swork in Haiti and Japan.

Steinberg said he’s proud of the part-nerships for sustainable development

he’s been able to help cement whileworking with JDC in the most devastatedparts of the Philippines. JDC’s work inthe country is focused on education, psy-chosocial support, livelihood recovery,

public health,and disasterpreparedness.

He plansto stay in thePhilippines at

least into the spring.“What this has taught me about play-

ing an active role in the JDC world andthe Jewish world and the world I want tobe a part of, is that there is something im-portant about responding immediately,”he said. “For me, there’s always beenthis want to be part of something veryhands-on very quickly.”

Steinberg said the responses he’s re-ceived from Filipinos have been heart-warming and moving.

“People are amazed here that peopleoutside of the Philippines care about thePhilippines,” he said. “I'm proud to bethat face for them, to show them that theworld and the Jewish people care aboutplaces that are vulnerable and sometimesforgotten.”

JDC Entwine Managing DirectorNaomi Sage said Steinberg embodies theselflessness, passion, and can-do spiritthat are key components of any success-ful Goldman Fellow.

“Adam has devoted countless hoursof energy as a volunteer leader withinAustralia’s Jewish youth movements, and now brings his passion for Jewish

life and professional expertise as a physi-cian to the global arena,” she said. “Heis a rising star who will no doubt make adifference in the Jewish world.”

The Goldman Fellowship and thebroader engagement work of JDC En-twine is critical to defining JDC’s secondcentury.

“It is a very unique way of engagingour generation, and there’s no doubtthese kinds of experiences cultivate

something special our generation con-nects to,” he said. “The challenge is tocontinue to create meaningful opportu-nities and continue to translate them intomeaningful leadership and advocacy ex-periences.”

The Joint Distribution Committee(JDC) is one of the beneficiaries of theJewish Federation of Madison Tzedakahcampaign.

In the heart of Jerusalem, marked by a symbol of the U.S., lies a beautiful shinybuilding with a shiny black entrance. I always wondered what was behind thosedoors! Years later I was dating Mickey, the man who would later become my hus-band, and he opened this mystery door for me. His mother worked in this verybuilding. Imagine my surprise when he led me toward the massive black shinyentrance, past the strict security to this heavy no entrance door… we rang the belland I saw myself walking inside the American Center!! So, for this month’s goodnews corner I thought it would be nice to share some information about how theAmerican government invests in media, culture, education and Israeli-Palestinianco-existence programs.

So here is something from Mickey’s mom:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv and the American

Center in Jerusalem work to increase bilateral understanding of the United Statesamong the Israeli public and among Israeli government, academic, ngo, universityand high school strata. A growing public awareness of the extensive cultural, busi-ness, military and social ties between Israel and the U.S. is a key goal of the Em-bassy. Many Israelis feel they know about the U.S. but most have only traveledto New York or L.A. and really have little understanding of what makes the U.S.“tick.” In Israel, Public Affairs has three main components – Media Affairs –the press office provides information about U.S. policy and programs to membersof the media and the general public; Cultural and Education Programs withthe Embassy supporting rich variety of cultural and educational programs in Israeland exchange study programs to the U.S. in order to provide best U.S. practicesand models. The Cultural section also provides support for women’s empower-ment, environmental concerns, English language programs for Haredim and otherminority sectors, workplace inclusion programs, inter-communal problem solving, promoting the two-state solution and Israeli-Palestinian co-existence programs;and The American Center in Jerusalem. The Center is an information resourceas well as an educational and cultural center with a range of activities (and mymother-in-law works there).

Israel and the WorldFebruary 2014 Madison Jewish News/27

Ariel Sharon, one of the most importantand controversial figures in Israel’s history, died on Saturday (1.11.14) afternoon at theage of 85. Sharon, who fought terrorists inhis military career and rivals in politics, lost the final battle for his health more thaneight years after the stroke that ended hissix decades of public service.

US President Barack Obama calledSharon a leader who “dedicated his life tothe State of Israel.” According to theJerusalem Post, Sharon was one of Israel’smost iconic and controversial figures. Asone of Israel’s most famous generals, hewas known for bold tactics and an occa-sional refusal to obey orders. As a politi-cian he became known as “TheBulldozer,” a man contemptuous of hiscritics while also capable of getting thingsdone.

When we were growing up inJerusalem, the capital of Israel, Ariel

Sharon was always on the news so weknew he was an important person. Weheard many controversial things about himand knew that he was the subject of a lotof debate. He was like a commander infront of the battle. He truly believed in hisway, although not all agreed with him. Yougrow up fast when you are living in terrorlike we did in the 2000s and Sharon gaveus the confidence that things would calmdown. We were personally affected in2005 during the evacuation from the GazaStrip. Although upon reflection we havegained some understanding about whathappened, many people felt stabbed in theback by Sharon’s actions at the time. Wehave mixed feelings about Sharon as apolitician but great respect for all he did toinfluence the future and for how he dedi-cated his life for our country! His wholelife he fought in wars, he lived his ideasand his dreams. In this time of mourningand reflection I call on us all to look insideand think about what we are doing for thesake of our people, Israel or our commu-nity. What more can we do? May he restin peace and may we all learn from everyperson who dies - their qualities and will-ingness to be a bit better!

Some of the Highlights This Month:The 2014 Israeli Film Festival is com-

ing up!! In an effort to make the films

available on a variety of days and times wehave decided to spread the festival over theentire month of February. We worked re-ally hard to find new, thought-provokingIsraeli movies based on the themes offriendship and conflict. Each movie willinclude a discussion or guest speakers tomake the experience more meaningful.Mark your calendar and gather yourfriends - we can’t wait to see you at the Is-raeli Film Festival! Please see the flyer onpage 16 in this edition of the Madison Jew-ish News.

Tu B’Shevat, the New Year of theTrees, is the Jewish Arbor Day. The holi-day is observed on the 15th (tu) of the He-brew month of Shevat. Scholars believethat originally Tu B’Shevat was an agri-cultural festival, marking the emergence ofspring. In the 17th century, Kabbalists cre-ated a ritual for Tu B’Shevat that is similarto a Passover Seder. Today, many Jewshold a modern version of the Tu B’ShevatSeder each year. The holiday also has be-come a tree-planting festival in Israel, when Israelis and Jews around the worldplant trees in honor or in memory of lovedones and friends.

The Jewish Federation of Madison andMadison Minyan joined forces on a slip-pery Friday night in January for a Tu B’-Shevat Seder. More than twenty peoplebraved the weather to celebrate at this ter-rific event.

We had Tu B’shvat activities at Beth Is-rael Talmud Torah, Bait Midrash, theMadison Jewish Community Day School,Chug Ivrit, Ivrit Kala and Gan HaYeled.

Birthright- UW Hillel went to Israel aspart of Birthright free trip to Israel. If youknow someone between the ages of 18-26that hasn’t been to Israel on an organizedprogram, tell them they can have an amaz-

ing 10 days free trip to Israel!! You don’thave to be a UW student to go!! For anyquestions don’t hesitate to ask us! Pleasesee the article about Birthright in this edi-tion of the Madison Jewish News.

Movie of the month: Strangers No More – In the heart of

Tel Aviv, there is an exceptional schoolwhere children from forty-eight differentcountries and diverse backgrounds cometogether to learn. Many of the students ar-rive at Bialik-Rogozin School fleeingpoverty, political adversity and even geno-cide. Here, no child is a stranger.

Strangers No More follows severalstudents’ struggle to acclimate to life in anew land while slowly opening up to sharetheir stories of hardship and tragedy.

With tremendous effort and dedication, the school provides the support these chil-dren need to recover from their past. To-gether, the bond between teacher andstudent, and amongst the students them-selves, enables them to create new lives inthis exceptional community. (http://www.strangersnomoremovie.com/)

Following the film we will have a dis-cussion about how is it to be foreign, thestruggle and what Israel does that matters.
