Mazal Tov--Goal Reached! Thanks to all who made new or supplemental gifts and those who increased their gifts this past year. With your help the Federation exceeded its goal and has received $30,000 from the challenge grant angel and JFNA. The 2020 Annual Campaign raised $229,085 and we also raised $93,000 towards our 2021 campaign. The additional funds will enable us to weather funding challenges due to the pandemic and to provide additional social services to those in need locally and around the world. Thanks are also due Jeff Himelhoch, Sheryl Deutsch, Mitch and Mary Weiss, Lynne Hurand, Christine Mieloch, Diane Lindholm, Wendy Flamenbaum and everyone else who worked on the campaign to make it such an outstanding success. At our last Board meeting our 2021 budget was approved and the staff looks forward to building our Jewish community and continuing to provide social, educational, humanitarian programs and services. Please call if we can be of assistance.

IS YOUR ESTATE PLAN UP-TO-DATE?
Over the years, the Flint Jewish Federation has received many gifts from donors to be used for projects and programs. We hope that you will consider supporting the Flint Jewish Federation in a simple and easy way. Take advantage of the tax break with your Charitable IRA rollover. After you have provided for your loved ones, your philanthropic legacy and recognition can live on in the Flint Jewish community as a beneficiary in your will or trust. You can leave a bequest as: Bequest of a sum—A bequest of a specific dollar amount Specific bequest—Designate a specific asset to be donated Residuary bequest—After all debts, taxes, and other bequests have been paid, you can designate the
remainder or a percentage of your property to the Flint Jewish Federation Restricted Bequest—The gift can be used for any long tern FJF project or program area Here is a helpful planning tip: IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar retirement plans are among your estate’s heaviest taxed assets. By choosing to leave these assets to the Flint Jewish Federation, you can save on taxes and increase the amount left to you heirs. Other assets you may consider donating are life insurance policies, certificates of deposit, bank accounts or brokerage accounts. To make this gift, simply request a beneficiary form from the controlling institution and name FJF as a beneficiary. Any questions, contact Steven Low,
Executive Director at the Federation office 810-767-5922.
Here's a fun project to do with the kids today or tomorrow in preparation for Purim which starts Saturday night. (The exception being that Purim is celebrated Sunday night in Jerusalem.) I did this one, but kids can certainly have fun applying stickers and tape themselves. The noise maker or grogger is a classic Purim prop used during the reading of the Megillat Esther (Book of Es-ther) to make noise every time the name of the evil Haman is mentioned. The reading takes about 1/2 hour, and during that time children who are old enough to come to the reading must sit quietly so that everyone can hear every single word of the story. So listening for Haman's name gives everyone a reason to pay attention!
You'll Need:
Plastic cups, any size, clear works well too!
Electrical Tape (my favorite new crafting supply)
Beans to fill the cup
Gold stickers
A popsicle stick (you can make these with-out the handle too)
Hot glue gun or other tacky glue
How-To:
1. Fill one of the cups about 1/4 full with dried beans or anything else you have on hand that will make noise when shaken.
2. Attach the popsicle stick to one cup with hot glue, and then join two cups together with hot glue. My new hot glue gun is so hot it melted the cup the first go around, so use the hot glue sparingly.
3. Decorate the cups with electrical tape and stickers
Enjoy making lots of noise on Purim!

Israeli HMOs: Pfizer vaccine immunity best after 14 days by Israel 21c.org Study of 800,000 Covid test takers, half inoculated with the first dose and half not, shows no difference in infection rate
until two weeks later. Having vaccinated more people against Covid-19 per capita than any other country, Israel is in a unique position to study the effects of the first of two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. Clalit, Israel’s largest health maintenance organization (HMO), looked at Covid-19 test results of 200,000 people over age 60 who were vaccinated and 200,000 people who were not. They found that between five and 12 days after receiving their first dose, people were just as likely to test positive as were unvaccinated people. However, there was a 33 percent decrease in positive tests among vaccinated
people 14 days after the first shot. (The second and final shot is given at 21 days.) The second-largest Israeli HMO, Maccabi, did a similar study and reported a 60% drop in the chances for infection 14 days after the first dose. Preliminary results of a smaller Israeli study, conducted at Sheba Medical Center on 200 people, found that after a week only 1% of those receiving the first Pfizer dose had enough antibodies to provide immunity. That Pfizer’s own Phase 3 trials with 40,000 people determined that the effects of the first dose kicked in after 11 days. Only about a week after the second dose did immunity levels begunreach the maximum 95%. According to Our World in Date, as of January 14, 22.34 out of 100 Israelis have received the first Pfizer dose through Israel’s four HMOs, Magen David Adom and hospitals. That puts Israel in the No. 1 spot, with the United Arab Emirates in a distant second place at 12.9 per 100. The round of second doses has now .

The 17th Annual Karen Schneider Jewish Film Festival Committee is hard at work planning the next Jewish Film Festival which is scheduled to take place the end of April and into May. The Flint Jewish Federation has again partnered with two wonderful institutions: the Flint Institute of Arts and The Marwil Detroit Film Festival. We would like to top our contributors from last year and make this year even more successful with your help. Your support would be appreciated as we work together to enrich our entire community by bringing outstanding films shown virtually that are being featured at many Jewish Film Festivals throughout the country. As a contributor you would be invited to attend the opening night patron film. Contributors will receive two tickets for each of the films shown during the festival week. If you are interested in becoming a contributor at this year’s film festival, please make your check payable to the FJF and drop it in the mail to 5080 West Bristol Rd., Ste. 3, Flint, MI 48507. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the office at 810.767.5922. We hope to make this the best Film Festival yet!
