Production bases
Our production bases consist of two
large-scale coastal steelworks located in
eastern and western Japan and Chita
Works , wh ich prod uces pipe s an d tu bes,
and these bases effectively produce high
qua l i ty i ron and stee l products wi th
state-of-the-art technologies.
Each Works has a Steel Research Laboratory
that supports JFE Steels technologies.
The Kurashiki Area of the West Japan
Works has the good fortune of being
located in the Setouchi Area. This area
has a mild climate and faces the Seto
Inland Sea, which is r ich in water
resources and is called a natural canal,
and it also has deep harbors. The site
area is about 11,000,000 m2, about 250
times that of the Tokyo Dome. Steel bars
and wire rods are produced mainly in the
Kurashiki Area.

Sintering plantIron ore and limestoneare heated and hardened
to form sintered ore.
Unloaded raw materi-als are stored.
Coke is manufac-tured from roasted
coal at high tem-
perature in cokeplant.
Oxygen and lime are blown in tohot metal to remove sulfur and
phosphorus of impurities.
Non-metall ic inclusions arefurther removed from the molten
steel to be higher quality.
Iron ore is melted andreduced to pig iron.
After th e pig iron i s poured int othe furnace, oxygen is blown in
to remove carbon and rene to
molten steel.
The molten steel is con-tinuously cast into blooms.

We improved the fatigue strength ofcomponents by integrat ing surfacetechnologiessuch as carburizing, quenching and induction quenchingwithsteel composition design technologies inorder to offer products with optimallycontrolled metallic structures that meetcustomers needs.
Specialty steel is machined and thermallytreated by customers before use. Wework to develop steel products that canbe efficiently machined and thermallytreated by customers. In addition, wework to develop steel products that donot require thermal treatment for the pur-pose of saving energy. Furthermore, wepromote the elimination of the thermalrefining process from the manufacturingprocesses of steel bars in order to con-tribute to the protection of the global envi-ronment.
Fine austenite steel produced with highfrequency induction quenching technologyshows excellent delayed fracture strength (asmeasured by constant-load delayed fracturetesting equipment).
