    Guzz Picks

One of the videos I sent out to members recentlywas a very interesting interview with HowardAlden. In the interview Howard was asked whatpick he used, he replied he was introduced toGuzz Picks by a fellow guitarist while he was in

Spain and has been using them for the lastcouple of years. I thought to myself, someone ofHowards stature would not change picks unlessthey were very good. I contacted Jorge Guzmanin Madrid, Spain and bought an S3 pick for myselffor $16 which included postage.

The S3 is the first pick in the world with which youcan play with any of the three sides, producing adifferent sound from each. Jorge Guzman workedfor 14 months in England on the engineering, 3Danalysis and HQ sound spectrograms todevelope the S3 pick, but the S3 has been

created 100% by hand. Changing from a pick youhave been using for years is never easy, butperseverance pays off, the S3 needs some timein your hand to get its full potential. The blackrubber insert on one side ensures a good gripand the tone from the pointy end is rich and full. The two sides are bevelled, one different from theother to produce two distinct rhythm sounds, onea brilliand sound and the other a dark sound. It isjust a matter of familiarity and technique, turningthe pick on its side for rhythm and back to normalfor soloing. the S3 is available in two thicknesses

according to your preference. Two of ourcommittee members Alf Micallef and Mike Slavenhave also bought these picks and have beenpleased after initial perseverance with them.Picksare often a neglected part of a jazz guitaristsarsenal, but are an important part of getting thesound you want. For a small outlay you may getthe sound you have been looking for for so long. For more info contact : www.guzzguitar.com

In September my wife and I were on holiday inSalerno, Italy, where her sister lives. Walkingalong the street one day I saw a posteradvertising a concert by jazz guitarist Irio de

Paula and as I had 10 or 11 of his CDs I wasexcited at the prospect of seeing him performlive.

Some background on Irio de Paula :

Born in Rio de Janeiro in l939 he started playingthe guitar at age 6 and is recognised as aguitarist/composer specialising in Brazilian andSouth American rhythms such as Bossa Novaand Samba. While touring Europe in the l970swith the brazilian singer Elza Soares, and aftertaking part in the Pescara jazz Festival with his

own trio, he decided to stay and reside in Italy.Since then he has been one of Italys mostpopular jazz guitarists and has played withBarney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Toots Thielemans,Buster Williams, Bobby Durham, Jimmy Cobb; atthe "Birdland" in New York he performed solo, with the Brazilian trumpetist Claudio Roditi andalso with David Sanchez. He has also performedas solist with the Synphonic Orchestra of SanRemo and Palermo, and with the "Modigliani" ofTuscany and of Lecce. He has recorded over 60CDs and my first introduction to his music was on

a CD called Lembrando Wes Montgomery (atribute to Wes Montgomery). I have sinceacquired about 10 more of his albums all of whichdemonstrate his virtuosity both in Brazilian andstraight ahead jazz guitar. For more informationcontact :http://www.jazzitalia.net/artisti/iriodepaula_eng.asp#.UinVFBY-BsM

THECONCERTThe concert was held on the outskirts ofSalerno in a place called Fratte and was in apark called Area Archeologica di Fratte. I took ataxi there and luckily a friend of my sister-in-laws gave me a lift back. I arrived about 45mins before the concert was about to start andwas introduced to Irio by my sister-in-lawsfriend Eugenio Paolantonio who organised theconcert. Unfortunately neither Irio or anyoneelse there spoke English so I had to use signlanguage and I gave Irio the JGSWAs Websiteand email address and although not speakingEnglish he was very friendly and wasappreciative that an Australian had come to hisconcert in Salerno. He came on stage about

9pm standing with his 7 string classical guitaralone on the stage. Although he was playingnext to a microphone I think his guitar waswirelessly fed through the excellent soundsystem.

He started with three unknown Brazilian tunesfollowed by Manha de Carnaval, his techniqueof the genre was impeccable and he played 5other (unknown to me) Brazilian tunes in hisprogramme. The tunes I did recognise wereLullaby of Birdland, Someone To Light Up MyLife (one of the evenings standout tunes) andhe closed with a tour de force version of TheGirl From Ipanema which included a fewquotes from Take the A Train. For an encorehe played a great version of Brazil whichsegued into Samba de Orpheu and on thelatter he closed out the tune tapping out thenotes on the guitar with his left hand whiledoing percussion on various parts of theinstrument with his right hand. It was a trulyinspired performance and I felt privileged towitness one of Italys finest Brazilian/Jazzguitarists in action.

Off the Books : A Jazz Lifeby Peter Leitch

    www.vehiculepress.comwww.peterleitch.com

    www.peterleitch.zenfolio.comISBN : 978-1-55065-348-9

Our Patron Peter Leitch has written a wonderfulaccount of his life in jazz and other pursuits. Itis a refreshingly honest chronicle of his life fromhis very beginnings growing up in an English

speaking family in the a predominately Frenchspeaking working class area of Montreal. Anearly inspiration was Belgian jazz guitaristRene Thomas who lived in Montreal for someyears. As Peter dedicated himself to his musicand learning to play jazz it was always a

struggle to make a living. He describes hisexperiences good and bad candidly with themusicians he worked with. As his reputationgrew he got to play with some of Canadas topjazz players including Oscar Peterson whom herecorded two albums with. He has always hada love of New York and eventually moved therein l982. He also mentions in his book his visit toPerth in Aug l991 when he was artist inresidence at WAAPA for 3 weeks. He also didthree weeks of gigs and teaching in Adelaide,Melbourne and Sydney. Peter has recordedsome 39 albums both as a leader and sidemanand he describes the making of many of thesealbums. Not only is he a world class guitaristbut in the last 20 years he has taken upphotography and like his music learned on thebandstand so to speak. To date he has had 12photographic exhibitions in New York, NewJersey, St. Louis and Starkville, Mississippi. Hismusical education was old school, learning on

the job, dedication to his art, listening to theclassic recordings, and talking with some of thegreats, also not being materialistic. This is allcovered in his book along with a life battlingdepression and other personal issues. Hewrites with humour and honesty and this bookis a great insight into how a guitarist despitemany pitfalls can reach the pinnacle of his art.

The original albumrelease contained tracks 1-10 and on this new complete sessions CD six more tracks have been added to theoriginal list plus a bonus track Gravy Waltz from his Softly But With That Feeling album from l961. this is vintageHerb Ellis at the peak of his artistry. The new tracks start off with Harpers Ferry (John Browns Body) with the tonefrom Herbs ES175 sounding better than ever. Many of the tracks especially those with trumpet and sax sound like aforerunner of his many successful Concord Jazz albums of the 70s and 80s. Herb Ellis fans will love this albumwhich is great value, 17 tracks and 77mins playing time. A timeless reminder of the great mans legacy. I M.

It will be the 20th anniversary of Joe Pass death in May 2014 and this new album fromJoes former student Frank Potenza is the ultimate tribute to one of the very greats ofjazz guitar. For this CD Frank has enlisted Joes rhythm section of many years JohnPisano, Jim Hughart and Colin Bailey. The tunes on the CD come from a selection of

Joes albums and include Eximious (1982), For Django (l964), Catch Me (1963), Portraits of Duke Ellington(1974), Ira George & Joe (1981) and Tudo Bem (1978). The exception to this is John Pisanos original Blues ForJoe from Johns album Hommage. This is a high quality album starting off with Joes composition A Foxy Chickand a Cool Cat a medium swinger. Throughout this CD not only do both guitarists play great solos, but theiraccompaniment of each other is exemplary. For Dlango starts off with some solo guitar from Frank before goinginto a bossa nova with the rest of the group. Another Pass composition Catch Me sets off at a cracking pace, withJohn taking the first solo then Frank. I was pleased to hear two favourites of mine from the For Django CD Fleur

dEnnui and Rosetta. A change of pace for Voce from the Tudo Bem album. The rhythm section of Colin Baileyand Jim Hughart who together appeared of seven of Joes albums put in a fine performance on this CD. The soundof Franks James L. Mapson Bop City model guitar and Johns signature Eastman are a joy to listen to.Congratulations to Frank Potenza for producing such a fine CD and I am sure Joe is nodding his head in approvalup there while enjoying a good cigar. The first one, anew release Words Unspoken features Esmond as a guest on two tracks, both sologuitar. In a Sentimental Mood and Body and Soul highlight his immense skills in

solo jazz guitar, great technique and taste with a clear warm sound and just the right amount of reverb on thesewell recorded tunes. He also sent me his CD Follow That (which has just been re-released) so I thought I wouldadd this to the review of his new CD. Follow That was recorded in 1999 and is a swinging quartet album. It is amixture of originals Blues For Wes, One For My Dad , Flight of Fancy and The Wild Brown as well as someof the finest tunes from the American songbook. The 9 minute opener Blues For Wes is a tour de force of jazzguitar dedicated to one of the greatest. Prelude To a Kiss is another example of Esmonds fine solo guitar.Serenata is one of the best tracks on the album (9mins) , starting off with Esmonds solo guitar before the groupjoins him and the tempo doubles into a real swinging version with a fine solo from pianist Paul Sawtell. This is afine straight ahead CD with generous times on every tune. For this and other fine CDs by Esmond Selwyn you cancontact him on [email protected] I M.

Ricardo Grilli is a guitarist from Brazil now resident in the US, and instead of beinginfluenced by the great Brazilian composers he was more into British bands like DireStaits. He came to jazz through Miles Davis, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra

etc. while studying at Berklee he forged a tight bond with the other musicians on thisalbum. He composed all the tunes on this CD. He has a love of odd meters and offbeat structures. As a composerhe has an interesting concept I figured the best way to get people to play with me was to write interesting musicthey would want to play, and it worked. Many of the tunes he plays in unison with saxophonist Gustavo DAmicoand it gives the feel of an ensemble album rather than a guitarist and rhythm section. His guitar tone is mellow andclear and fits in well the the saxaphone, This is a fine debut album for a jazz guitarist still in his mid twenties. Formore info www.ricardogrilli.com I M.

I picked this CD up while on holiday in Italy and for a change it features Bireli with aliberal dose of blues, groove and funk. The opening track Jay is a great starter withan infectious shuffle beat. On this CD Bireli uses a Yamaha 335 type guitar and gets

a range of sounds from downright dirty to a clean jazz sound. He is backed by his regular group member FranckWolf on tenor & soprano along with Hammond organ and drums. The track 01/10/10 , a ballad, opens with FranckWolf playing the melody with Birelli adding delicious fills behind him before going into the first solo. the fast pacedOleo starts with improvisation before stating the melody at the end. Wheres Frankie is a medium paced blues.Cleves Changes is one of my favourite tracks, a fast bebop tune which shows off Birelis fantastic chops. Anothertwo great tunes are Captain Ferber and Place du Tetre. This album will appeal to a wider audience althoughBireli still retains his jazz feel and harmony. A highly recommended CD. I M.

Fiveplay Jazz Quintet have been mainstays of the San Francisco jazz scence sincethe 1980s and have a musical history stretching back to their days at Berklee in Boston. The group is co-led byguitarist Tony Corman and his wife pianist Laura Klein. Tony Cormans story is both unusual and inspiring. he hadbeen playing saxophone in jazz groups professionally since the l970s till his sax playing days came to an end in2002 when a jaw problem prevented him from contiuing to play. it was then after spending a little time in a darkplace he grabbed a guitar and got busy at the age of 50. After years on the sax he had all the lines in his head, hejust had to get them out on a new instrument. Judging from his playing on this album he not only has good lines buta great jazz tone to compliment his technique. With dedication youre never too old to learn. On this CD Fiveplayadd Vibes player Ted Wolff, trombonist Frank Phipps and the Albatross Clarinet Quartet on 5 0f the tracks. Apart

from the tune Glamorgan composed by sax player dave Tidball all the other tunes were written by Dave Cormanand Laura Klein. all the tunes on this CD are tuneful and melodic and give the inpression of being a standard younever heard before. This CD is a fine example of a modern day group making originals sound like the greatamerican songbook. For more info contact www.fiveplayjazz.com or [email protected] I M.

JGSWA Fundraising Concert at Jazz Fremantle Oct 27, 2013

Our JGSWAConcert at Jazz Fremantle produced some music of a very high standard with four ofPerths top professional jazz guitarists taking part - Ray Walker, Freddie Grigson, Garry Lee andCliff Lynton. Ian Macgregor and JGSWATreasurer Len Williams opened the concert with Stuffy,Groovin High and Amanhecer, the latter a composition by our Patron John Pisano. Next upwas JGSWA co-founder Garry Lee with his original tune Movin On 40 Years a dedication toWes Montgomery on the 40th anniversary of his passing, this was followed by Falling in Love

With Love, Four On Six and Tenor Madness. After a short break Cliff Lynton took to the stage,Cliff brings a more contemporary feel to our JGSWA concerts and started with CEst Si Bonollowed by two originals Tres Deux and Angelique, he then finished with a favourite of his,

Lee Ritenours Sugarloaf Express. Our President Ray Walker followed Cliff with a fine set ofmusic, his original Pricillas Blues (named after John pisanos cat ! )opened followed by LoveWalked in, Jingles, the ballad The Night We Called it a Day and to close a rousing Strike Uphe Band. Freddie Grigson, current lecturer in jazz guitar at the West Australian Conservatorium

was the last guitarist. Freddie hasnt played in one of our concerts for some time, due to gigcommitments so it was good to hear him play again at the concert. Sporting his new aquisition , ablonde Gibson Birdland, he opened with Putting on the Ritz followed by It Could Happen To

You and finished with an Ornette Coleman tune When Will the Blues Leave. We just had timeor a finale thanks to Freddie Grigson cutting his time on stage shorter. The finale featured five ofhe six guitarists who took part and they played Just Friends. We had the wonderful rhythm

section of Peter Jeavons (b) and Daniel Susnjar (d) two of Perths top musicians, who did a greatob considering we had no rehearsal and were looking at the music for the first time that day. Thanks also to Jazz Fremantle for hosting our concert and for letting us perform at their greatvenue for the past 10 years.
