In the world of education you never face a day that is the same. With each new encounter, whether an achievement or a challenge, our Rose community approaches it as a learning experience, an opportunity to improve.
We even explore ways to enhance what has become routine for our school and community. This has been evident over the last few weeks with our events and activities.
SMART Block, this year, has provided many new opportunities for students. The implementation of Pop-Up MakerSpaces has allowed students the time to participate in areas of interests or explore new interests. Faculty members are coordinating with local professionals and post secondary schools to engage our students during SMART Block. Club participation has increased with many organizations utilizing the time to extend it’s reach to new members. Honor societies are finding new ways to provide assistance to peers through tutoring as well.
Over the years our school has been eagerly building our Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions (PBIS) program. Recently, J.H. Rose was named as a Green Ribbon School by the North Carolina Department of Education for our continued efforts to create an environment for academic and social success.
Our arts programs continue to excel. The Marching Rampants, who competed at the White Oak Classic recently, were awarded 1st place honors for Drum Major, Percussion, Music Performance, Visual Performance, General Effect, and were named Champions of their size classification. In addition, our Rampant Theatrical Company completed their first production of the year with Lost in Yonkers, while implementing Saturday workshops in preparation for their spring musical.
Just this past week, the J.H. Rose Athletic Foundation held it’s annual Hall of Fame Banquet along with the Scales-Aldridge-Garner Memorial Golf Tournament. This year, the first in the tournament’s fourteen year history, a golfer walked away with a new vehicle, sponsored by Brown and Wood, for his ‘Hole in One’. Even better, is that each year our student and staff participation grows, as well as the positive impacts with our athletic and academic programs.
It is exciting as this year continues to progress and enhancements are made to better serve our students in all aspects.
For your reflection:
“Excellence is a habit acquired by continuous improvement on the little things you do with a firm belief that it's going to be better than before!”

“Taking Steps Beyond Rose” The yearlong Math I classes of Tim Dameron and Tracey Moore traveled to Pitt
Community College at the beginning of October. Sixty-eight students EARNED a seat
on the bus! Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Monroe, Mrs. Wagoner, Mr. Moore, Mrs. Moore, and
Mr. Dameron accompanied the students on this awesome trip.
Students were introduced to future career opportunities provided by PCC. They
participated in an activity that got them thinking about careers that might be suitable
for them personally. A panel of faculty from different departments at PCC shared what
each department offers. Students were also given a tour of the campus by current
PCC Ambassadors and treated to a lunch provided by Pizza Inn.
Rose students returned to school with a better idea of the gem of a community
college we have just down the road and an awareness of scholarship opportunities.
How Do Students Earn This Trip?
Points can be earned by completing homework on time,
being prepared for class daily, and receiving ribbons
through an online remediation/practice program.
Students also have the opportunity to earn points by
attending special sessions of SMART Block and listening
to speakers, who are former students of Mrs. Moore’s
Math I classes that are now either in college or in the
business world. The speakers have discussed their
struggles and how they overcame them in order to find
success.

Honors Health Science I students had the opportunity to travel to the Gross Anatomy
Lab at ECU to complete pig heart dissections and work with two human cadavers. This opportunity was made possible by our

Students can also be seen wearing lab coats donated by AB parents!
In September, Health Sciences students and parents had the opportunity to hear guest

The JHR girls’ tennis team’s Ball Drop fundraiser for breast cancer awareness was a great success! A lucky Rose student won $500, and $1200 was raised for Liz Upton, a
Rose teacher and former tennis coach who is battling cancer. For the past 6 years, Coach Marvin Hardy and the tennis team have been involved in the fight against breast cancer. The Upton Tennis Relay for Life team along with the Ball Drop fundraiser lets
the team support the fight both at a research level and at a personal level. Thank you to Greenville Utilities, University Square Chick-Fil-A, and to all who
donated money and/or purchased raffle tickets. Thank you to all who came out and had fun on the courts to support breast cancer and JHR tennis!

Rachel’s Challenge
Last week the entire Rose student body assembled in the gym for a
presentation about Rachel's Challenge. The following is an excerpt from the
Rachel's Challenge website: "Rachel’s Challenge is a national non-profit
organization dedicated to creating safe, connected school environments
where learning and teaching are maximized. Based on the life and writing of
Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine tragedy in 1999, Rachel’s
Challenge provides a continual improvement process for schools designed to
awaken the learner in every child. We motivate and equip students to start
and sustain a chain reaction of kindness and compassion that transforms
schools and communities." Our students learned that small acts of kindness,
showing respect toward all people, and "paying it forward" can make a hugely
positive impact on classmates and the school environment. Stay tuned to
hear how Rose students are getting more involved! For more info about
Rachel's Challenge, visit www.rachelschallenge.org.

The Advisory Council Congratulates JANICE MOORE
as the September Recipient of the Rampant Spirit Award
The Spirit Award originated with Mr. Langley and continues with Ms. Jacobson, both strong advocates of school spirit. Spirit can be defined by the “loyalty and feeling of inclusion in the social history or collective essence of an institution or group, such as in school spirit.” The Rampant Spirit Award is given to the teacher, employee or per-
son who best defines Rose school spirit. The Advisory Council every month presents an individual who they feel displays school pride and shows students the importance of it. The Rampant Spirit recipient believes in J.H. Rose
and all that it has to offer every student who walks through our halls.
Janice Moore is the Rampant Award recipient for October. Ms. Moore has been a member of the administrative team at Rose for three years and is involved in many initiatives As the new chair of the Exceptional Children’s Department, Ms. Moore used the summer to reorganize workloads among teachers in this department and prepare learning strategies for all of the students, especially incoming freshmen. This has made the beginning of this school year run more smoothly and be a more positive experience for both students and staff. In addition to her role as an administrator and teacher in the EC department, Ms. Moore is chair of the Positive Behavior Integration Support (PBIS) Program. This is a statewide program that is relatively new to Rose. On November 17 J.H. Rose will be recognized at a banquet and given a green ribbon to show full implementation of this program. The next step is to be a “model school.” Ms. Moore is also chairperson of the School Improvement Team (SIT). This committee consists of staff, administration, and parents that are working together to create reports that show how Rose is meeting District established goals and the school’s plans for continued improvement. Just in case Janice wasn’t busy enough, she is also the lead mentor for all beginning teachers at Rose. This is an initiative that pairs new teachers for three years, and “new to Rose” teachers for one year with a veteran Rose teacher as a mentor. The group meets for lunch on a monthly basis and Ms. Moore guides the ongoing mentoring process. As a teacher with a special education background, Ms. Moore’s education philosophy is, “All students can learn. They may learn at different levels or different rates, but they can learn. The most effective teachers are those who understand their students and are able to differentiate their teaching styles to reach their students.”
