Showing the seniors out right

By: Tja Gore

Wednesday February 2, 2011 was senior night at Jerome High School. The Tigers faced off against the across bridge rival the Twin Falls Bruins. As the eight seniors (Brady Craig, Ri-ley Parrish, Jordy Garrard, Adam Gramkow, Austin Leavitt, Spencer Parker, Chase Wright, and Nick Arevalo) stepped on to the court for their final, regular season, home game, they mentally prepared themselves for what would prove to be a record breaking night.

Not only did the Tigers produce a 62-33 win over the Bruins, they also broke the previous school record against Twin. For the last 59 years, there has never been a point spread as great.

The seniors were honored before the game began, then the battle was on its way. The an-ticipation of the game loomed in the air, as Riley Parrish stepped up to center court for the opening tip. The game turned out to be a defensive battle to which Jerome came out on top holding the Bruins to mere 33 points.

Not only did the Tiger’s defense show up to the game in full force the offense did as well, shooting 51% from the floor, and 4/9 from the arc.

“Holding someone like Twin to 18 percent shooting really shows how committed we are to defense. Anytime you beat Twin, it’s a good day when you shut them down like we did defensively; it just makes the win ten times better” said Riley Parrish, a senior post who contributed seven points to the game Wednesday night.

As the Tigers deliver a memorable win against the Bruins they also managed to play all eight seniors.

Adam Gramkow, a senior on the team remarked that it felt good to beat Twin by 29 and even better that everyone got to play.

While the night was all about the seniors, the three juniors (Spencer Geist, Shaquille Ken-nedy and Jake Hollifield ) came into the game wanting to show the seniors out the way any group of seniors want to leave their last home game with be with, a win.

Jake Hollifield, a junior on the team and also a starter for the game on Wednesday night.”Playing with a group of guys in their last year puts a lot of pressure on the team as a whole to make their last season one for the books” said Hollifield.

In the end the Tigers defeated the Bruins, which put Jerome in second in the Great Basin Conference, just behind the Minico Spartans. Jerome takes on Minico Wednesday February 9 at Minico. If the Tigers win this game, it will secure them second place, in the Great Basin Conference.

Candy Gram! By: Deanna RomoOoh la la! It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and that means run-ning around town trying to get your inner romantic to come out. This is the one day of the year that nothing is too corny for your love. Instead of rushing everywhere to get a gift, get them a beautiful Candy Gram!

Friends of Rachel are selling candy grams for Valentine’s Day. You can buy one for a friend, a significant other, or even yourself. They will be sold during lunch in Room 239, or in the cafeteria. This will continue from February 1st through the 11th. The low cost of only one dollar makes this an instant must-have for Valentines.

Sophomore Magali Medrano said, “I think that the candy grams are cute. I’d definitely buy one!”

The candy gram includes a candy cane, a heart saying, “Hap-py Valentine’s day,” and a note that you can write yourself. They will be delivered by Miss Wright’s first hour class.

“I think the candy grams look like they would be fun and de-licious,” said sophomore Klynn Walker.

This is not Friends of Rachel’s first attempt to make it in the candy gram business. Crystal Valdez was the first one to give them the idea.

“We did it during Christmas and it came out good,” said Wright, “so we decided to do it again for Valentine’s Day.”

The money is going to be used to replenish the funds for Friends of Rachel. They then will turn around and use this money to help families in the community.

So, don’t forget to get one for your honey this Valentine’s Day. It’s just one dollar. One dollar that will make their day.

timbawolve$Advanced SpeechBy: Melissa Leavitt

There are some things that go past the halls of school, even after the graduation cap has been thrown into the air. This is the legacy associated with the Jerome High School Advanced Speech team.

During the past thirteen years, the JHS Advanced Speech team has won ten first place state titles. The wall in the gymna-sium is decorated with banners showing years of championships. It is the most successful program in this school.

Mr. Scott Burton, the coach of the team has been in charge for 14 years. He said that he is surprised that he has lasted this long.

To be a member of this team, students are required to have an audition with Mr. Burton, and the elected officers. The stu-dents must show oratorical talent and confidence. Incoming students tryout at the end of each school year, and the team is put together before school is out for the summer.

Jackie Sedano, a junior on the team, tried out the end of her freshman year. “I was really nervous about it because I wasn’t sure if I had ‘it’. When I found out that I made it on the team, I realized my true potential,” said Sedano.

Participants are then put into different categories according to where their strengths and talents lie. The categories are as follows; original oratory, duo interpretation, after dinner, panel discussion, impromptu speaking, extemporaneous speak-ing, expository speaking, salesmanship, humorous interpretation, serious interpretation, radio, retold story, and oratorical analysis.

Then, to manage the hefty workload associated with the team, Mr. Burton assigns category leaders to lead their categories, and act as a filter for him.

During the 2nd trimester and the beginning of the 3rd trimester, students work hard to write, rewrite, and polish their performances. Often the hallway leading to Burton’s room is filled with students, giving their performances to the wall.

There are many signature things that the speech team does that sets it apart from many other organizations in the school. There are elected officials that stand up at the front of the classroom, and go through the announcements every day. The class will often clap after every announcement.

Michael Rexroat, current speech president, enjoys the daily routine of announcements. “It’s fun, it’s original, and it feels like a State of the Union address every day,” said Rexroat.

In addition, there is “Shoe of the Day”, where a student’s shoe is selected, taken off their foot, and put in the front of the room. If the student takes down the shoe before the bell rings, they get put on the “Wall of Shame” that is located by the windows in Burton’s room.

There are also mysterious “Timberwolves” apparel and sayings. around the room Unfortunately, no one was willing to divulge any information about this tradition.

This year, there is also a “Video Clip of the Day”, which is selected by the students, and played over the overhead projec-tor.

All these fun activities help create an atmosphere that is conductive to the creative writing and performing process. The speech team competes at districts at Canyon Ridge on April 2nd and at state in Coeur d’Alene on April 19th.

Basketball Court Battle By: Andre Hernandez

Everybody wants to win their last home game of the season, but it is not always easy. Especially when it is against cross town rival the Twin Falls Bru-ins, who already beat them earlier in the season.

The Jerome J.V team opened up the varsity’s senior night with a win of their own. But it is possible that the J.V game was a lot more interesting than the varsity’s big victory.

The first half was not pretty for the Tigers being down 9 at halftime, and all the momentum being with the Bruins. Then the Tigers realized what they needed to do to get a win, which was get it done on the offensive end but more important play good defense.

“Best played game of the year. It started on the defensive end and not al-lowing more than one shot. Extremely pleased with the way the team has developed,” said J.V coach, Sam Sharp.

The game came down to two crucial free throws that were shot by sopho-more Eric Gratzer, who made the first free throw and then barely missed the second. That shot only put the Tigers up by one point with seconds left. Then the Bruins called time out to draw up a play. The ball was inbounded then Twin Falls had a wide open 3 point shot, which they missed. TheTigers junior Cameron Ahrens came down with the final rebound.

“It felt great, feels like now we are the best team and we can beat any team we come across as long as we play like we did Wednesday night,” said soph-omore point guard Bradford Craig.

“I thought everyone played great,” said sophomore spectator Nina Ahrens.

For the sophomore group this is only the second time they have beaten Twin Falls since they started playing together. The first win came last year with the same margin of victory. Not only was the game intense, it was a good confidence booster for the team for their remaining two games. After beating the other twin falls team Canyon Ridge Friday by 12 points.

The final two games for this team will be played against the Minico Spar-tans and the Kimberly Bulldogs. Both should be tough games but hopefully both are victories for the Tigers.

Cheer Senior NightBy Miranda CrosbyFor four years these spirited cheerleaders have been cheering for Jerome High. And now they are preparing to say goodbye.

Not only was the boy’s basketball team honored Wednesday, February 2nd. The JHS cheer se-niors were also honored for their hard work supporting all our sports teams half time of the boy’s game againstTwin Falls.

The seniors include; Lina Zettner, Edgar Cortez, Memii Saravia, Estephania Jauregui, and Slash.

Coach Anne Sharp, who has been coaching for 2 years at JHS, said she has a great group of seniors this year; she is really going to miss the talent and dedication they bring to the team.

“It feels good and bad to know that this is my last year cheering for JHS, good that I have im-proved so much and this has taught me a lot, but bad that I have to leave my team and my drill sergeant coach that has taught me so much! I will miss them and the school,” said senior Lina Zettner.

The girls went to distrits Saturday February 5th. One stunt group got first, another got third, and the sideline got first as well.

Zettner says that her favorite memory would have to be hanging out with everyone of her friends, dang fun, and stupid things.

“Cheering was my favorite memory of my senior year. I hate the thought of this being my last year in high school,” said senior Estephania Jauregui.

Jauregui said another memory from her senior year will be prom. She can’t wait till that, and graduation day.

“There are a lot of things that have happened to me and that are memorable. I think I just love senior year in general. You pretty much do what you want. It goes by fast and I’m going to miss it,” said Zettner.

Zettner has been cheering for two years at JHS, but she says it feels like a life time.

“This was my first and last year cheering here at JHS, but I enjoyed it so much,” said Jauregui.

Coach Sharp said that they have worked hard this year and as much as she would love to keep them in her program longer, she is excited to see where they go from here.

“To the freshman, I have some advice; don’t rush high school, it goes by fast enough, enjoy it while it’s here,” said Zettner.

Tiger Mania

2010

Tiger Mania By: Jordan BaileyMay 13th, is the set date, almost all students look forward to every year, Tiger Mania. For all you freshmen that don’t who what that is, it’s an all day assembly that consists of class competitions, entertainment acts, and videos from the school year. It also causes students to have lots of fun and laugh a lot. Tiger Mania always has a theme. Last year’s was “lost in the Amusement Park.” Even though it’s far away, Mr. Quinley & Mr. Wardle are already thinking up themes for this year. The theme they’ve thought of so far is, “He was framed”, but that could change any time before the actual Tiger Mania happens. Even though, the entertainment acts aren’t completely put together yet, The Tiger Mania Staff are looking for entertainment acts for this year’s Tiger Mania. Mr. Wardle said the acts don’t have to be based on the theme, but they’d prefer it. There will be a meeting, for individuals interested in being one of the acts, in February. So, listen to the announcements and look on the online newspaper for more information. “It’s a little depressing knowing that this is my last Tiger Mania, and it’s the last time I will get to see the memories we created,” said senior Jace Bloom. Considering Mr. Wardle is one of the teachers involved in getting Tiger Mania put together, his Digital Media class is in charge of making the vid-eos students will be watching about the past year. “We always shoot to improve our videos, we had a lot of good videos last year, and I hope to have a lot of good ones this year,” said Mr. Wardle.Jerome High School’s principal Mr. Anderson enjoys Tiger Mania, but he’d like to change the format a little and include academic pieces and videos instead of just a day that highlights student activities.“My favorite part about Tiger Mania is getting the student body together to celebrate all the good things we do at this school, and getting the stu-dents involved. That’s my favorite part,” said Mr. Anderson.

A Kick Back to College

By: Jeanette Vazquez

Last year graduates, Roman Vazquez and Sergio Martinez, both attend Trinity Lutheran College in Seattle, Washington, playing soccer.

They received winter break of about six or seven weeks. Together they decided to come down back to their hometown, Jerome, and spend time with family. They had plenty to do, both busy and fun, but time ended and they had to return back to college on January 31st.

While they were in Jerome they did practically the same things.

They both played indoor soccer at the old middle school on Sundays. Vazquez says he got to hang out with friends and spent quality family time. Martinez says he spent most of his time with family and his girlfriend, Leslie Sedano.

“I thought it was sad/hard that he was leaving, but we still stay in close contact. We prac-tically text all day, call each other each night, and see how our days went,” Leslie Sedano.

Life in college and a big city compared to small Jerome, changes everything from sched-ules to hobbies.

When their parents they talked to their parents about them attending college in Seattle, the parents agreed that it was a great school, but they were a bit upset that it was distant from home.

Vazquez loves the big city way more than town life and enjoys the weather, but misses his friends and family. He chose to major in psychology because he has a general interest in people. During the week, Vazquez goes to classes and does homework.

He says every class is a challenge and there’s no other way to get through homework, but to do it. Over the weekends, Vazquez joins the gym to work out or do homework. After graduating college, he plans on getting a psychology career and continuing soccer.

“It’s awesome being independent!” he says.

Martinez likes that soccer in college is more competitive. He says living independently is different, but it’s something to get used to. Martinez is also majoring in psychology. He usually goes to play futbol(indoor soccer) and just be in Seattle. Martinez doesn’t like classes where he has to write essays, and takes time out of his day to do homework. He plans on getting a PhD in psychology.

The guys live together along with two other roommates; Eli and Noah Holowatch.

“They’re my best friends, and great roommates,” said Vazquez.

Idaho State Cup by Ashley Cox The Idaho Youth Soccer State Cup Tournament is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30, 2011.

Clubs and teams, ages U13-U17, from all over Idaho gather together every year to play some of the most intense games of the season. This year, Twin Falls has the honor of hosting the State Cup Tournament at the Sunway Soccer Complex.

This event is so large, teams and players start booking hotel rooms almost a year in advance! According to the website, http://www.selecthospitality.net/Idaho_State_Cup_Soccer.html, hotels in the Twin Falls/Jerome area are en-tirely sold out, and people are having to book rooms in places as far away as Burley and Jackpot.

The winners of each age group will be required to compete in the Far West Re-gional Tournament in Boise on June 20-26.

A few teams from the Twin Falls Rapids Soccer Club went to the State Cup last year in Boise, but didn’t make it to Regionals. The U17 Boys placed 4th, the U14 Boys placed 4th, and the U14 Girls placed 6th in their age groups.

Freshmen, Yesenia Martinez, member of the U14 Girls team last year, said, “I had a great time at State, and if we (U15 Girls) keep working as hard as we have been, we’ll have a good chance of winning this year.”

Martinez said that she is really looking forward to having the State Cup in Twin Falls, but she is going to miss not getting to travel and stay in hotels.

Teammate and fellow freshmen, Sarah Walker agrees.

“It will be nice to be able to go home, but it’s still a lot more fun to travel to tournaments,” said Walker.

Even though it may not be as fun as traveling, Walker said it will be great for our local economy to provide for the thousands of participants and spectators attending this event.

More information about the Idaho Youth Soccer State Cup can be found at https://www.secure-sam.com/www.idahoyouthsoccer.org/doclib/SC_2011_App.pdf.

Ag FabBy: Austin RasmussenMr. Clifton has a class called Agricultural Fabrication where he provides them with the tools. And the students bring to materials and students can build almost anything. It is a student led class Clifton is only there to help out and make sure everything stays under control in the shop.

“It’s my absolute favorite class to teach and I have been teaching it for 20 years,” says Mr. Clifton.

The requirements to take this class are students have to take Ag Systems as a prerequisite and taking welding before is recommended for the class.

When students are in the shop they have to be busy they can’t just go into the shop and sit around and do nothing all day, instead of a final at the end of the trimester students make a project and if they think they did exceptionally well on it bring it to him and he will put that in as the grade for the final.

“It is an open project class where students are only limited by their own imagination,” says Clif-ton.

You can build whatever you want in that class (except weapons of course). There are people building a lot of different things, Alex Burlington has been working hard on a rocking chair and he said it has been coming together quite nicely.

“My favorite part of about this class is being able to build whatever you want and not having to build what the teacher wants,” says junior Alex Burlington.

It’s kind of hard to get into the class at first if students that are a freshman have a harder time getting into the class it’s more of an upperclassman kind of class.

“This is a really cool class it lets the students work with their hands and build the stuff they want to build instead of what they have to build,” says junior Nick Sutton.

The only grade students get in the class besides the final is Clifton walks around with a clip-board and makes sure everyone is busy. Students get a grade every week on how busy you have been throughout the week.

“Students are allowed to work on anything from wood working, metal projects, small gas en-gines, all the way to working on their own vehicles,” said Clifton.

Students can get the grade they want in the class if they try and be busy if students want to take this class try and think of an idea before they start the class because once they are in the class it’s hard to think of a new project every day.

Peek-A-BooBy: Jordan TaylorLow temperatures + heavy snow + falling rain = Groundhog Day 2011

Groundhog Day is a day for people to come together and celebrate the coming of spring.

It always occurs on February 2, because the first week of February falls exactly between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, making it the perfect time.

Punxsutawney Phil, the famous weather predicting groundhog, lives on Gobblers Knob near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

According to http://www.groundhog.org, Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting groundhog. The others are just imposters.

This year was his 125th prediction. He did not see his shadow, meaning spring must be near.

Phil came out of his burrow on Gobblers Knob, Tuesday, February 2, 2011, at dawn, in front of thousands of fans from all over the world, to predict the weather for the coming months.

This year in Pennsylvania there was a massive winter storm during Groundhog Day. However, many didn’t think that the weather would affect Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow.

“This storm included snow, ice, and freezing rain,” said meteorologist, Adam Colpack, from KMVT Channel 11 News.

Some people are calling this storm the “storm of the century”. Colpack says that it was a pretty deep system and a very powerful storm, but also stated that there have been worse storms in the past.

He also said that we’ve only been in this century for eleven years so it’s too early to tell if this is the “storm of the century.” Only time will tell.

However, Rob Lonsinger from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has his own opinions.Lonsinger says that he thinks the weather affects Phil seeing his shadow. He feels that if it’s cloudy Phil would not see his shadow, and if it’s sunny, he obviously would.

He doesn’t think that Phil is very accurate at predicting the weather.

Lonsinger is from Pennsylvania. He says that groundhogs are similar to the rock chucks we have here, but they are not the same. They are both rodents and they are both in the squirrel family.

When asked if he thought Groundhog Day became more popular since the movie “Groundhog Day” came out, he replied, “Absolutely, because it’s got Bill Murray in it and it’s a great movie. It makes people more aware of the funky tradition we have.”

Groundhog Day is just an observance, not a public holiday.

“You gotta have faith. Groundhog Day is growing every year because it has heart and soul. Come, meet strang-ers, sing, shiver, and drink caffeine. It’s the best all night party in Pennsylvania,” said the famous singer-song-writer George Michael.

They sell jewelry, pre paid telephone cards, and will send money by RIA, SIGUE, y MEXICO EXPRESS. Your local Tienda Guanajuato has it all.

Senior Perez, the owner of La Tienda Guanajuato said, “I always have my querida ayudantes, which means my ladies who work for me and my wife La Señoría Ro-cia Cervantes, greet my costumers before coming in the store and help them on what they need.”

“It’s very exciting to work here. It reminds me of my grandmother, Ivet Marlene’s place back in Guanajuato, Mexico, because the Mexican music reminds me of her place. Also because mi abuelita had her own business like la Tienda Guanajuato, and I used to help her with her business,” said Señoría Lorena who works for her uncle Senior Perez, the owner of La Tienda Guanajuato.

Everyone has their own way of dressing or has different types of fashion opin-ions, but Mrs. Cervantes and Mr. Perez would love it if you would stop by even just to look around.

“I like working here, because I love their clothes here. Another reason I enjoy working here is because La Tienda has different styles of dressing clothing and fashion,” said Ms. Hernandez, who works at La Tienda Guanajuato.

Welding By: Ramiro Mendez

Are you looking for a fun class with no homework? Well, its just been found.

Welding is a class that has been offered at Jerome High School for 20 years. By Mr. Clifton. What happens in welding is that students stay in the class for about 3-4 weeks and learn the basics of welding. After being in class, students go out into the shop for the remainder of the trimester and do mini welding projects. “You’re not confined to a desk ,and you get to see students work with their hands,” said Clifton. He likes the fact that his students can use what they have learned and use it out in the shop. It’s not hard to get in welding since only the prerequisite is Ag. Systems. Ag systems is a class that takes students through the basics of working in a shop. It teaches safety, tools, and how to work them. Students also perform smaller projects in this class that gives then a feel of the shop.

Being interested in an agriculture career is not anecessary case. Clifton wants everyone to know that students don’t have to be interested in an agriculture career to take welding, because shop classes teach skills for life regardless of what your future career might be.

For those people who actually enjoy welding, they can always take their experience to the next level by enrolling in Advance Welding. It offers more hands on learning and more projects to do with a longer amount of time to work on projects.

Tate Paterson and Wyatt Dewitt are both in Advance Welding. They enjoy being in the shop and working on welding projects. The a shops atmosphere attracts them to the shop even more. Paterson said, “There’s nothing better to do then to relax the nerves by exiting electrons in two pieces of metal.”

However, it isn’t always fun and games in the shop If students are not careful then they can get hurt. Thankfully, Clifton practices safety in the shop. There has not been any servere injures in the shop. If students mess around in the shop, Clifton will dock their grade which encourages students to keep their heads up and be safe.

Dewitt enjoys being in the shop, but has an accident every now and then. happens he had an ac-cident when he touched the bottom of the metal and got shocked.

Dewitt said, “It didn’t hurt at all it was pretty cool”.

Whose Group are You? By: Karlee Walker“Even though we’ve changed and we’re all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we’ll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we’re not all still friends.” -Robert Hall

Everywhere you go in JHS there’s cliques, also known as “groups.”

In JHS, there are many different people, many different styles, and many different groups. Other’s call them names like; Jock’s, nerd’s, prep’s, band geek’s, emo’s, skater’s and on and on.

“I think it’s crazy to have so many groups, but yet so colorful. Why can’t we all just be one huge group? I also love how the high school has so many groups and were all so friendly,” said freshman Cynthia Martinez.

Of course there may be drama in others cliques, but that doesn’t stop stu-dents in JHS to split!

Other’s having been best friends since they were younger, and some cliques have just started their friends here in JHS.

“I love my friends because their always there for me. They never stop caring and always tell me the truth. They are real and their sisters. I’ve had these same friends for about four years and I plan on staying with them FOREV-ER!! I love them so much because they love me no matter what! I’m never judged and we can laugh together, cry together, and do everything together. That’s what friends are for.” Said freshman Challis Kober.

You look through the hallways and you never really see someone alone. They’re always with certain people, socializing.

Jerome High school has been around for many years and is full of many memories, being left behind as friends or groups continue life to be together forever, or never see each other again. To be a friend is not much; to have a friend is everything in a place like Jerome.

Looking for college??By: Nancy Ramirez

Many seniors here in Jerome High School don’t know what to do after they graduate. Some however, know the college that they want to go to and have their future planned out.

There are many colleges out there to choose from and yet many seniors do not know what college they want to at-tend. Many options are open and there are many opportu-nities for many seniors to attend really good colleges.

Many have more than one college picked out and they plan to at least attend to two colleges during their career.

Senior MaryCarmen Gonzalez was asked if she knew where she wanted to go to college she said that she was not sure.

Idaho State University is a big option here at JHS. Many students plan to go to ISU to start their career. There are many colleges out there and they offer really good classes and it depends on the career that the student wants to do.

Senior Maritza Gonzalez said that she is planning to go to ISU to with her friends and start her career there.

Even though a student is playing a sport many colleges of-fer a lot of good ones and obviously they can keep on play-ing sports.

College have many offers to make to students and usually it includes sports and a lot of clubs. Many students like to get involved in a lot of things to make school easier for them.

Junior Jessica Ramirez said that she is really looking for a great college to go to and even though she is still looking for the right one on the side she has plans to attend Idaho State University.

There are a lot colleges open out there. It should not be so hard to find one. Pick the career that you want and find the college that best offers the career that you want. Move on and have a great future.

“The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged”By: Avery Egbert

“The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged” all started with bad cell phone reception. Shelby Peters, one of the actors in the play, began the show as an audience member doing crazy and distracting things like taking calls on stage, sitting on people’s laps, and even doing yoga. This created a fun atmosphere and made the crowd anxious to join in the fun, which they were soon asked to do.

This crazy play was performed by nine of Jerome High School’s students and they certainly had fun with it.

Junior Meghan Burnham said, “We all get along really well, and we’re all close friends. It was a really good acting experience and it helps, when you have such a short amount of time, to be with people you like. It’s great motivation.”

It may have seemed all fun and games, but this play was actually put on to raise money to maintain the stage at JHS.

“We decided to do this one to do something different, to try to raise money for the auditorium,” said Director Shane Brown.

The production asked for donations as admissions, with the goal of raising enough money to get new stage equipment.  It would also benefit non-drama students at Jerome High School, because the auditorium is used for many different events.

Reaching this goal was certainly important to many students on the drama team, so a small group of actors spent the last two months cramming to get ready for this fun-filled performance.

“I think Mr. Brown chose really dedicated actors, who were committed to learning their parts during Christ-mas break,” said Lauren Ramos, a junior at JHS.

Basically, the whole play was about Shakespeare’s many great works and performing them in a unique way. They were turned into cooking shows, football games, and even rap songs. And while they were doing all this, the performers found time to include the audience in their fun.

During a crazy rendition of Hamlet, one audience member was brought up to play the impromptu part of Ophelia.  The audience roared out Ophelia’s inner-monologue and she had to stop it with a scream represent-ing her emotional turmoil.

Audience participation like that made the play fun for everyone as the performers hoped it would. The pro-gram even encouraged audience participation and said, “Don’t be a dud- have fun tonight!”

“I was laughing so hard, my face hurt. Especially when ‘the king’ kicked me out of my seat,” said freshman Jamie Lloyd.

“The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged” contained the plays: Romeo and Juliet, Titus Andronicus, Othello, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, The Apocrypha, and Hamlet; along with Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, and Sonnets. Each was performed by one of the three sets of three actors. The student’s in the play were: Kelsi Bangerter, Lauren Ramos, Shelby Peters, Meghan Burnham, Ethan Wheatley, Dallin Mena, Michael Rexroat, Thomas Crozier, and Coltyn Giltner. Also, a special thanks to Kenya Thompson, Emily Olsen, Wendy Vanden Bosch, and Mark Vanden Bosch(or “Bob” as they were all referred to) for being a wonderful tech crew.

All these experienced actors got together and worked their butts off to get this play ready for the public. They all enjoyed performing this crazy play, and everyone who saw it enjoyed watching.

Freshman Alexis Cain said, “All of Shakespeare’s plays, performed by nine actors in 90 minutes; it was epic!”

JLT JV Season By Jessica Praegitzer

As the author Charles Dickens once wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This describes the Jerome Lady Tigers JV team perfectly.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Kelley who was one of the team leaders said, “I really enjoyed playing on the team this year. The girls all stepped up, especially the freshman, and we pushed ourselves every day. Plus, we are all like best friends so drama was never an issue.”

After the tryouts were over and the cuts were made, the JV girls had a pro-ductive season starter. Coming out to surprise Century, and even them-selves, they took a big lead and won the game. Although their season was mixed with many wins and losses, the JLT hit a four game winning streak towards the end of the season, ending with an overall record of 11-8.

Wing, Paige Jackman, said, “I had an amazing time playing basketball on the JV team this season. We got really close as a team because we had challeng-es that made us closer: from hurt girls not being able to play, to a pregnant coach having a little boy in the middle of the season. I loved every second of it, I think we all did.”

Although they came upon three different injured girls, and a pregnant coach throughout the season, they adjusted and still had a great season.

JV coach Rayna Stimpson said that she really enjoyed this group of girls. They played really well together and they grew as individuals and also as players. She said she is really going to miss their personalities.

For some of the girls, the Filer game was probably the last game of their high school basketball careers, and it was a very emotional final win.

Freshman Aspen Grove said, “I liked being moved up with one of my friends. It was an awesome experience. It was weird playing with a team I’ve never played with before, but then it got way fun after a couple weeks.”

While most of the girls move on to participate in their spring activities, they will never forget their 2010-2011 JV basketball season and all the exciting moments they shared together.

By: Norma Acuna

Are you having any upcoming events like maybe a Quincenera, a baptism, or simply a birthday party; and you can’t find any good musicians to play? How about one of the best local groups, like X-Corpion Musical.

X-Corpion musical is a local band that plays Latino music. They play all of the newest and hottest hits of duranguense, cumbia, rancheras etc. This band has been together for a year. Even though this particular band has only been together for a year, they have all had past experiences in other bands.

Isidro Chavez and Chepo are the ones that came up with the idea of starting their band. It all started when they were young. Mr. Chavez and Chepo have been together in the music industry since they were 13, so they are the ones that have more experience.

One of the best things of this band is that they all don’t see each other as just members but more like a big family.

This band is composed of six members:

Chepo- he plays el bajo & tuba electrica (Bass and Tuba electric)

Ismael Torrez-who plays the saxophone

Isidro Chavez-who plays the drums

Jaime Torres-he also plays the saxophone

José Manuel- tambora primera voz (Tambora and First voice)

Tony- Teclados y segunda voz (Keyboard and backing vocals)

“Estoy muy contento de estar en este grupo. Este año ah sido de lo mejor por que todos nos llevamos bien y asemos lo que mas nos gusta que es tocar,” said Saxophonista Jaime Torrez.

“I am very happy to be a member of this band. This past year has been the best because we all get along great and we all share the passion for music,” said Saxophone player Jaime Torrez.

This band has had the opportunity to travel to many local places like: Hailey, Caldwell, Jackpot, and even Wyoming. Isidro Chavez said he doesn’t mind to travel a lot because of the big bus they have.

“Lo bueno de tener un autobús es que todos nos podemos ir juntos y no tenemos tantos problemas,” said the backing vocalist Tony.

“The good thing about having a bus is that we can all go together and we don’t have many problems.” said Tony

Esmeralda Chaves and Alexis Anahi are two of their biggest fans. They like to follow this band wherever they go.

Mrs. Chavez said that one of their craziest memories was last fall when they went to play for a quiencenera in Caldwell and they got stranded there with no heater or blankets. They had to spend the night on the bus

“That was the worst experience ever, we were all cold, nobody could sleep and we still had to report to work after that harsh moment. We didn’t even have time to go home since we were already 3 hours late to work,” said Jose Manuel

Mrs. Chavez said that even though that was a terrible experience now it’s just another memory they can all look back to and laugh.

They have been friends since 4th grade, but became best friends last year. They enjoy going places together and just simply hanging out.

Jessica Pregitzer said,” Mikayla and I are like sisters. We go everywhere and do anything together. We can stay with each other for weeks at a time, but get pretty annoyed after a couple of days. I hope Mikayla and I stay friends all the way through high school.”

They both went on the American Heritage trip last year when they were 8th graders. On the American Heritage trip they traveled to the east. They also traveled to Arizona twice together in the last two years. Most best friends would get sick of each other and fight, but not these two. They are like sisters; they can talk to each other about anything and everything.

These two are known around the school as basically sisters. They might not be together during school all the time but are still seeing each other and making jokes walking down the hall.

“I love Jessica she is always there for me when I need her, and I hope that it never changes. She is the bomb and always will be,” said, Mikayla Al-bers.
