A society in which consumption has to be artificially stimulated in order to keep production going is a society founded on trash and waste, and such a society is a house built on sand. –Dorothy Sayers We all live at the same address. –Jim Antal At the core of the economy is a mechanism that does not recognize the most fundamental

thing of all, the living, evolving, sustaining natural world in which the economy is

operating. - Gus Speth

In church we honor God as Creator, and give thanks for the earth- our common home-

through which our Creator graciously offers humanity hospitality. But when we return

to our everyday lives, we routinely steal from our host and Creator, gorge ourselves on

the abundance God has provided without regard for those who will follow us, and foul

our nest by upsetting countless parts of our interdependent ecosystem. - Jim Antal

Are we willing to admit that the way we are choosing to live is out of harmony with the

way God has created us to live? Are we willing to do the hard work to change the

individual desires that cease to outweigh the common good? Jesus, after all did not

teach blessed are the consumers for they shall have all they want. -Pastor Scott

Maybe we are too busy building Babel to consider living in Eden. –Pastor Scott

ANNOUNCEMENTS Pastor Scott PRELUDE Christ, We Do All Adore Thee -Dubois Chancel Choir *SHARING THE PEACE *OPENING SONG #28 For Beauty of Meadows -Farquharson/Welsh Melody

CALL TO WORSHIP (contemplative) Pastor Scott

God, at the heart of the matter we know that the speed and volume at which we are consuming is unsustainable. We know that the amount of energy, food and resources we waste is extravagant. We understand that we have not valued the rest of creation above our own needs and wants. Collectively we have claimed what is Yours as ours. We have polluted the rivers and lakes You have created. We have pushed other species to extinction. Fracking, mountain topping, tar sand extraction, and rain forest clear cutting have turned Your beautiful works into ugly places where all that is God given has been polluted by short sighted economics. In the pursuit of progress and more, we haven’t paused to reflect on the cost and damage our actions have done and are doing. Like any sin God, we hide from the truth. We say tomorrow, when it is urgent. We will use technology to get us out of this. We will change. We will do more. What tomorrow will be left? We borrow the future covenant You have pledged to our children and grandchildren selfishly for ourselves without thought to what kind of future it will leave for them. Do not forgive us I pray, until we come to a place of repentance, of realizing that we must change. Until we recognize just how far our materialism and drive for more have taken us from You, from one another, and from the rest of all You have made good. God of abundant life, do not give us rest until our hearts are troubled enough to move in Your name. Amen. SPECIAL MUSIC I Will Sing of the Mercies Arr. PADS in October- I am pleased to share that I have all my food and volunteer needs for October complete. This is the earliest date this has ever happened! Some Girl Scouts came last Monday and organized supplies used with children to provide constructive activities, which was greatly appreciated. Also, thank you to the members who stepped up and provided soup. For a complete listing, see the November Pilgrim.
