The Reconstruction Era (1865-1877)

• Lincoln was assassinated in 1965.

• Andrew Johnson (Democrat) supported white supremacy in the South. South States attempted to restore slavery.

• In 1866, Radical Republicans won the congress. -> anti-slavery

• Carpetbaggers (came from The North, supporters of the Reconstruction)

• Scalawags (South White men, supporters of the Reconstruction)

• «Redemption» began in the early 1870s : The Democratic party retook control of the South, ended the Reconstruction Era and voted Jim Crow Laws
