Keyfindings

• TheskillsandlivelihoodtrainingactivitiesforwomenthroughSelfHelpgroupsandforfarmersislikelytohaveasubstantialimpactonthelivesofcommunitiesatHisarandJajpur.

• TheseunderdevelopedcommunitiesandthemarginalizedpeoplethereinarevulnerablePeopleheredonothaveskillstolivelihoodandtheircurrentlackofexposuredonotprovidethemwithopportunitiestochangetheirfinancialsituationandfuture.TheseprogramsrunbyJindalStainlessFoundation(JSFhereon)haveprovidedawareness,skillsandmarketaccesstothesepeople,thushelpingthembecomeindependentandhopefuloftheirfuture.

• Theprogramshavepositivelyimpactedahighpercentageofthefamiliestargeted,whichhasinturnhelpedenhancetheeconomicactivityintheregion.

• Rs1,07,07,402insocialvalueisexpectedtobegenerated,whencomparedtotheRs.69,31,202investmentmadeintheprogramsorganizedbyJSLThus,theSocialReturnonInvestment(SROI)ratioequatesto1.54:1.Ifthecurrentinvestmentismaintainedintheprograms,weinferfromourstudythatforeveryRupeeinvestedintotheprogramsoverthenext3years,thenthereturnontheinvestmentmadewouldreturnsocialvalue1.54times.

• Ourstudydemonstratesthattraininghasbeenaveryeffectivetool,especiallyforthewomenbeneficiaries,whowouldordinarilynotgetaccesstosuchtrainingeasily.Theincreaseinawarenessandhelpinaccessingmarkethashelpedthembecomeentrepreneurs.

• ToincreasesuccessandthesocialvaluereturnsfromtheprogramsofferedbytheJSLteam,thereshouldbeanincreaseinnumberofbeneficiariessothattheexpenditureincurredisspreadovermorepeopleandthusgethigherthan1.54timessocialreturns.

AbouttheSkillTrainingandlivelihoodpromotionprograms

TheJindalStainlessFoundation(JSFhenceforth)hasdelivered“TheskillstrainingactivitiesforwomenSelfHelpgroupsandfarmers”programinHisarandinJajpursince2007.

TheprogramprovidesongoingintensiveandtargetedmarginalizedandvulnerabletribalcommunityandwomenSHGgroupsandconnectsthemwithskills,family,communityandmarketplace.JSFalsoprovidesthemaccesstothemarketplacewheretheycanthriveasentrepreneurs.Forthoseseekingemployment,theseprogramsofferslikeemploymentandhealthserviceswhichsupportthewomenandthetribalpeople.

EvaluatingtheImpactoftheprograms

JindalStainlessFoundationshelpswomenSelfHelpgroupsandmarginalfarmersbyprovidingthemwithskillstraining,marketaccessandfinancialsupportthroughprogramsthathelpsthemkickstarttheirsmallentrepreneurialventures.JSFhasworkedwithmorethan1,800thisyearsofar.

Manyoftheprogramsthathavebeenrunningsince2007,somestartedaround2010andsomehavebeenrunningsince2014orso.Sincetheprogramshavebeenrunningovermanyyears,theoutcomeofthosepastyearscanbeseeneveninthisyearsincethenatureofinterventionisskillstrainingand

providinglivelihoodgeneration.Forourcalculationswehavenotconsideredmostoftheimpactsoftheseinterventionstosimplifycalculations.Manyoftheseinterventionsareexpectedtolast2to3yearsandsomewilllasttillonlytilltheinterventionsareprovidedandsomewouldcontinueevenwhensomeactivitiesarestoppedalthoughtheoutputswouldsuffersomewhat.

Theseprogramsassistthedirectbeneficiariesinincreasingtheirself-esteem,providingthemwithopportunitiestoengageinemploymentorbecominganentrepreneurthus,contributingpositivelytoothersaroundthemandparticipatingineconomicactivities.Thisnotonlystrengthensthemtostandontheirtoesbutalsohelpsthemtoworkwiththeircommunityandprovidesupporttotheirfamiliesbygeneratingprimaryandsupportingincome.

Theprogramshavebeensuccessfulinachievingsubstantialchangesinthelivesofthesepeopleandtheirimmediatefamilymembers,despitetheirchallengingcircumstances.

Thisreportevaluatestheperformanceoftheseprogramsandmakesanattempttoforecasthowlikelythesepositiveoutcomesarelikelytocontinueintothefuture.

JindalStainlessLimitedisoneofthelargeststainlesssteelconglomeratesinIndiaandranksamongstthetop10stainlesssteelconglomeratesintheworld.It’snotonlythemagnitudeofitsoperationsthatdeterminesthecredibilityandname,butisinspiredbythevisionforinnovationandenrichinglives.JindalStainlessGrouphasanannualcrudesteelcapacityof1.8MTPAandthegrouphasanannualturnoverofRs14,500crores.JSLhasinitiatedstrategicgrowthplansinbothdomesticandinternationalmarketsandhasmadeinvestmentstowardscapacityexpansionsthroughforwardandbackwardintegration.

JindalStainlesshasreflectedtheirstrengthinthebusinessofstainlesssteelbynotonlybringingbestmanufacturingfacilitiesandbusinesspracticesbuthasalsocreatedaFoundation,JindalStainlessFoundation(JSF)whichisrunningvariousdevelopmentalinitiativesallofwhichareaimedatreachingouttotheindividuals&communitieswhoresideintheareaofitsoperationsinJajpur,OdishaandatHisar,Haryana.JSFhelpsprovidethemarginalizedpeopleneartheirplantoperationswithaplatformtoempowerthemselves.

CorporateSocialResponsibilityisastrategicapproach,whichintegratessocialandenvironmentalconcernsintoJSLbusinessoperations.Basedonthisguidingprincipal,JindalFoundationaddressesrelevantissueslikeCommunityDevelopment,Education,IntegratedHealthCare,SkillDevelopment,WomenEmpowerment,EnvironmentandBusiness&HumanRights.JSFimplementstheseprogramsnotonlyacrossallitsplantlocationsbut,alsoinareaswhichareoutofitssphereofinfluence.Toimplementtheseprogramseffectively,partnershipshavebeenmadewithNGO’sandInstitutionswhichspecializeinfieldsofeducationandskilldevelopmentandindustrialtraining.(JSL,2016)

CSRPhilosophyandMissionStatement

CorporateSocialResponsibility(CSR)isthestrategicapproachtowardssustainablecommunitydevelopmentandthekeytoinclusivegrowth.Withthatasafocus,JSL'sCorporateVisionis“Improvinglivesthroughtrustworthyandinnovativestain-lesssolutions”.

Alignedtoitsvision,JSLthroughitsFoundationhasawiderangeofsocialdevelopmentprogramsinitiatedarounditscorporateoffices,plantlocationsandfactorieswiththeaimofempoweringcommunitiesandbringingsuccortotheirwoes.Inaddition,effortsarebeingmadetosensitizeemployeesonsocialissuesandgetthemengagedincommunityworkthroughvolunteeringprograms.Thishasgivenourstakeholdersincludingtheemployees,thecommunity,andothersinthesupplychain,anopportunitytogetconnectedwitheachotherespeciallyintheimmediateoperationalspace.JindalStainlessLimitedhasestablishedlinkswithvariousNational/InternationalCSRinitiativesandstresseduponparticipatoryapproachofProgramDevelopmentandDesign.

JSLFoundation,aregisteredsocietyundertheRegistrarofSocieties,wasestablishedwiththeaimofimplementingvarioussocialandenvironmentalinitiativesthroughdirect&indirectmethods.Mrs.DeepikkaJindal,ChairpersonJindalStainlessFoundation,providestheoverallguidancefortheCSRinitiatives.DirectinterventionsarecarriedoutbyprofessionalandexperiencedCSRteammembersatplantlocations,andprogramsarealsoimplementedthroughreputednationalandinternationalcivilsocietyandNonGovernmentOrganizations.JSLbelievethat“CSRisthedirectconnectbetween“Head&

TheSocialreturnofInvestmentstudywasconductedinboththeirmanufacturingfacilitiesatHisarandJajpur,Odisha.

JSLaddresseskeysocialandenvironmentalissuesandencourageparticipationofallstakeholdersinvariouscommunitybasedinitiatives.JSLstrivestodevelopanenablingenvironmentforallstakeholdersthroughCommunitybasedSustainableDevelopmentProgramsandinsodoingfacilitateInclusiveDevelopment.

SustainabilityinitiativesofJindalStainlessarebeingguided&spearheadedbyMrs.DeepikaaJindalthroughtheJindalStainlessFoundationofwhichsheisthechairperson.JindalStainlessFoundation(JSF)isrunningvariousdevelopmentalinitiativesallofwhichareaimedatreachingouttotheindividuals&communitiesandtoprovidethemwithaplatformtoempowerthemselves.

WomenEmpowermentandLivelihoodPromotion

Thisyear,175womenSelfHelpGroups(SHGs)werepromoted/adoptedbytheCSRteamwith2044womenmembers.Anamountof`19,71,095/-wassavedbytheSHGsduringtheyear.ThetotalcumulativecreditlinkagefacilitatedforthewomenSHGsthroughthelocalbankshasreachedRs.1.11Crore.

ANNUALSHGSTATUS

GrameenMahilaSanjivaneeGruhUdyoghasbeenpromotedasamicro-enterprisebytheCSRteamatKumbhiragadiavillagesince2014.Thisfoodprocessingunithasbeencateringtotheneedsofthevillagewomen.Ontherequestofthewomengroup,theCSRdepartmenthasprovided70%ofthetotalcostofstabilizerandpulverize,andthegrouphasinstalledpulverizeintheunit.

InadditiontoitsStainlessSteelmanufacturingfacility,JSLhasestablishedanextensivedistributionnetworkthroughitsservicecentersandwarehousesandusedcontinuousinnovationinitsgrowthstrategy.TheextensivedistributionnetworkinbothDomesticandanoverseasmarket,servetheJSLcustomersfromitsStainlessSteelmanufacturingfacilitiesatHisser,HaryanaandJaipur,Odisha.JSL’sStainlessSteelcapacityafterfullexpansionatJaipur,Odishawillbeabout2.5milliontonsperannum.

JindalStainlessFoundationhasestablishedJindalInstituteofIndustrialTraininginHisar(Haryana)andJajpur(Odisha)toimparttraininginvarioustradestotheyouthbelongingtotheregionwiththeaimtomakethemindependentandself-reliant.Thecoursestaughtattheinstitutehavebeenmodifiedkeepinginmindtheneedofthemarket.TheInstituteshavemoderntraininginfrastructureandinstructorswhoindividuallymentorthestudents.

ThecoursesofferedareatBasicandadvancedcourseslevelinDressDesigning&FashionTechnology,IndustrialElectrical,ComputerSoftware,ComputerHardwareandNetworking,Beautycultureamongothers.Toensureexcellencethetrainingprogramsareupdatedwithindustryrequirements,JindalStainlessLimitedhasformedstrategicpartnershipswithvariousCorporatesandNGOs,includingNIITFoundation,SchneiderElectric,UshaInternationaletc

TheskilltrainingcentersbeingrunatHisararedesignedtodrawbothyoungmenandwomenforenrolment.Specialeffortsareputintoattractwomencandidatesforthecoursesandempowerthemwithskillssetswhichcanhelpthembecomeself-reliantinthelongrun.

Forwardandbackwardmarketlinkageshavebeenestablishedtoensurethataftertrainingthestudentsalsohaveanopportunitytoworkandearnadecentlivinginsometrades.

InJajpur,JindalInstituteofIndustrialTraining(JIIT)runstheskilltraininginitiativesandindependentlyrunatthevillagelevel.ThecoursesbeingrunattheJIITareindustryspecificanddesignedtoprovideemploymenttotheyouth.JIIThasbeenupgradedandnewlong-termcourseshavebeenintroducedinHigherDiplomainHardwareandNetworkinginpartnershipwiththeNIITFoundation.

Totrainunemployedlocalyouth,aoneandhalfmonth’scoursein“AutoMechanicandDriving”wasstartedinpartnershipwithNABARD.Afterthecompletionofthetraining,trainedyouthhavebeenabletogetvariousjobopportunitieslocallylike,driversforschooltransportvehiclesandotherlightvehiclesinthelocality.

A13months’fulltimeresidentialprogramtotrainyouthasdevelopmentinstructorshadbeenimplementedinpartnershipwiththeHumanPeopletoPeopleIndia(HPPI).Atotalof65studentsweretrainedunderthisprogramandaround50%ofthestudentsarenowemployedinvariousNGOsandgrassrootlevelorganizationsinOdisha.

AnewtrainingprograminIndustrialElectricaldevelopedinpartnershipwithSchneiderElectricFoundation,hasbeeninitiatedtoprovidetheyouthinandaroundtheplantlocationsinJajpur&Hisar.Besidesexposingthestudentstoindustrialelectricalknowledge,italsohelpspreparingthemtoaccessjobopportunitiesintheneighboringindustry.

WomenEmpowerment

WomenEmpowermenthasbeenoneofthekeyissuesforJindalStainlessFoundation.JSLhavebeenworkingwithwomenthroughSelfHelpGroups(SHGs),Skilltraining,ComputerLiteracyandIncomeGenerationPrograms.VariousprogramsonHandicrafts,BeautyCulture,DressDesigning,Cookery,DalProcessing,FoodProcessing,AgarbattiMaking,MushroomCultivation,Computerliteracyprogramsetc.arebeingdonewithwomen.

OverTwohundredSelfHelpGroups(SHGs)havebeenformedinJajpurandHisartopromotetheconceptofsaving,micro-creditandmicro-enterprise.Approximately3000womenaredoingregularmonthlysavings,theyhavesuccessfullyengagedwithbankswithover60lakhsisbeingdisbursedasloansandsubsidiesforvariousdevelopmentprograms.

Thegroupshavereachedastagewherevariousmicro-enterpriseinitiativeshavebeenstartedwiththemlikeAgarbattimaking,foodanddalprocessing,phenylmaking,mushroomcultivationetc.Varioustrainingprogramsonenterprisedevelopmentandmarketingofproductshavealsobeenprovidedtothewomentogivethemexposureandbuildtheirconfidence.CollaborationwithNABARDhasalsobeenestablishedunderPPPmodeltoinitiate‘Marketonwheels’.

ThefocusofJSF,duringtheyearshasshiftedtoidentifyingmicro-enterpriseopportunitiesforthewomenandencourageentrepreneurship.Thereisgrowingconfidenceamongthewomenandtheyareeagertostartsomethingontheirown.JindalStainlessLimitedisforgingnewpartnershiptotakeforththeexistinginitiativesandpromotevariousincomegenerationactivities.

InHisar,thewomenempowermentinitiativesarebeingrunthroughtheSelfHelpGroupsandtheVikasKendraInitiatives.Thereare58SHGsthathavebeenformedinHisarandareinvolvedinmonthlysavings.Smalltrainingandincomegenerationinitiativesarealsobeingcarriedoutwiththewomenlikehandicrafts,chalkmaking,phenylmakingetc.

EnterprisePromotion:24SHGgroupshavebeenencouragedtotakeupvariousincomegeneratingactivitiessuchasPisciculture,PapadandBadimaking,Agarbatti,mushroomcultivation,vermincomposting,preparationofvariouskindsoflocalsnacks,phenylproduction,spices,namkeen,goldengrassetc.

AsapartoftheCSRinitiativesunderWomenEmpowerment,JSLrunsvarioustailoringcentersinaroundtheplantlocationinJajpur.Everyyear,over100womenaretrainedinstitchingandtailoringthroughthesecenters.Mostofthetrainedwomenstarttheirsmallenterprisesatthehouseholdlevelandareabletoflourishfinancially.

Inanefforttobringtheprogramtothenextlevelandaddmorevalueinthelivesofthesewomenanewproductioncentermodelwasintroduced.TheseproductioncenterswouldproducegoodqualityfinishedproductswhichwouldthenbeconnectedtomarketsinandoutsideOdisha.

Asmita:AgroupoftwentyyoungwomenwerehandpickedfortheinitiativeandprovidedintensivetrainingonhomefurnishingproductsinIKAT.Aone-and-a-half-monthlongtrainingwasconductedattheJindalInstituteofIndustrialTraining,amastertrainerfromAllIndiaArtisansandCraftworkersWelfareAssociation(AIACA)conductedthetraining.ThisprogramwasinpartnershipwiththeEarthygoodsFoundationandaDelhibaseddesignerMs.SangeetaSen.

ThetrainingprogramwasfollowedbyadesignworkshopofhomefurnishingproductsmadeinIkat.AfterthedesignworkshoparangeofproductsweremadeunderthebrandnameASMITA

Theteamconductedpersonalinterviewsthatcapturedqualitativeinformationandalsoevaluatedvariousemotiveelementstocreateaholisticunderstandingoftheimpactsotheprogramsundertakenonallthestakeholders.

ThedetailedinterviewswerethenCollectedandrecordedandtheinformationcompiledandtabulated.

Indevelopingthequestionnaire,theCSRDSteamwasmindfuloftheculturalsensitivitiesandhencetheinterviewingteamwassochosenthattheywouldbeabletoadministerthequestionnaireinthelocaldialectandlanguageandhaveconductedsimilarresearchbeforeovermanyyears.

Thequestionswereamixofdirectquestionssineitsquiteanefficientmethodbutwereaskedinafriendlymannersothatreliableanswerscouldbeobtainedbecausesomestakeholdersmaynotbeaccustomedtocommunicatinginsuchadirectandcandidmanner.

ManyoftheQuestionsareclearlystated,specific,andalsohasmanyopen-endedquestionswhereverpossiblethuscreatingagoodmeasureofdescriptiveinformation

Thequestionnaireincludedanintroductorysectionthattheinterviewerreadtoeachstakeholderwhichhelpedtherespondentstounderstandtheobjectivesoftheinterview,identifyingtheteamcollectingtheinformationandexplainingtothemwhatwillbedonewiththeinformation.Therespondentswereassuredthatallresponseswillremainanonymous.

Someoftheinterviewswereconductedasateamandboththeinterviewerstooknotesalthoughtherewasawelldefinedpersonleadingtheinterview.Theinformationcollectedwasenteredinthesamewordsasthestakeholderused.

Therewasapretestconductedandafteranalyzingtheresultsofthepretest,thequestionnairewasaccordinglymodifiedbeforeproceedingwiththeprioritystakeholderinterviews.

Thecompletedinterviewquestionnairesinformationcollectedwasthentransferredtotheanalysistabletoensurethatthestakeholders’responsesarerecordedaccuratelyandobjectively.

Althoughtheinterviewerattimesclarifiedtheinterviewee’sstatements,shedidnottrytosummarizeresponsesinherownwordsandcapturedverbatimandalsoifsomestakeholderdidnotunderstandaquestion,theinterviewerrephrasedthequestiononlyslightlysothattheconsistencyofalltheinterviewswasmaintained.Veryfewrespondentsneededanyclarificationsorrephrasingofquestions.

TheStakeholderanalysisyieldedusefulandaccurateinformationaboutthosepersonsandorganizationsthathaveaninterestintheCSRactivitiesconductedbyJSL.

Thisinformationcanbeusedtoprovideinputforotheranalysesasmoreactionplanswouldbemadeinthefuture.

ThisSROImethodologyhelpsinarticulatingandunderstandingthefinancialvalueofoutcomescreatedafteremployingasocialinvestment,revealinginmonetarytermsthesocialvaluethatiscreatedforeveryrupeeinvestedinthevariousCSRactivitiesundertakenbyJSL.

SROImethodologygoesbeyondthegenericeconomicanalysisandfocusesonthevalueofoutcomesorchangesexperiencedbyavarietyofstakeholdersanddoesnotlimittofocusingonlyoninvestmentsandoutputs.

Manysocialoutcomes,experiencesbydirectbeneficiarieslikeincreaseinselfbeliefandselfconfidence,arerepresentedinfinancialtermsalongsidemoretangiblecostsavingsforgovernmentsinitiativestargetedatthesebeneficiaries.

TheSROIanalysiscombinesquantitativealongwithqualitativeandusesparticipatoryresearchtechniquestogiveaholisticaccountoftheimpactsgenerated.TheendresultofanSROIanalysisisanSROIratiothatcomparesinvestmentmadeascomparedtothefinancialvalueofsocialoutcomesgenerateddemonstrativelyandreflectedinmonetaryterms,thefinancialbenefitofsocialinvestmentsmade.

ItisimportanttonotethatwhileSROIenablessocialinitiativestobeassessedassocialoutcomesandexpressedinfinancialreturns,itisimportanttonotethatthesocialvaluereturncalculatedthroughanSROIanalysisisnotequivalenttoafinancialreturnthatwouldseethecreationofspendablerupees.Itisusedtojustbetterunderstandbyvaluingsocialoutcomesthroughfinancialmeasuresratherthananyothereconomicindicators,sayGDP.

InSROIfinancialproxiesareusedtoestimatethesocialvalueofnon-tradedgoodstodifferentstakeholders.Differentstakeholderswillhavedifferentperceptionsofthevaluetheygetfromdifferentthings.Byestimatingthisvaluethroughtheuseoffinancialproxies,andcombiningthesevaluations,wearriveatanestimateofthetotalsocialvaluecreatedbyanintervention.

LimitationsofthisSROIstudy

EvidencingOutcomes

Forthecurrentstudy,thenumberofstakeholdersachievingeachmappedoutcomewasdeterminedbasedonprimarydatagatheredfromtenantstakeholdersviainterviewsthroughaquestionnaire,aswellassecondarydatafromresearchsources.Duetolimitedopportunitytoengagealargesampleofrespondents,evidenceontheachievementofoutcomeshasbeenbolsteredbyreferencetoresearch.

Theimpactofthisrelianceonresearchontherobustnessofthecurrentfindingsisdiscussedinthe‘Limitations’sectionofthisreport.

Findings

ThisSROIanalysispresentsevidencethatforeveryRupeeinvestedintheProjectbyJSF,1.54ofsocialvalueisgenerated.

Thisvalueislikelytobeanunderstatement,aswehavebeencautiousinourcalculations.Forexample,anumberofoutcomesandstakeholderswereexcludedfromtheanalysis.Wheretherewasachoice,thelowestfinancialproxyhasbeenused.Wehavebeencautiousaboutthedurationofoutcomes.Althoughstakeholdersattributedchangestotheproject,acautiousapproachhasbeentakenonattribution.

However,SROIisaboutmuchmorethanjusttheinvestmentratio.ThisanalysishasbeenausefulexercisefortheProjectinrecognizingthevalueofalltheunseencarethattheprojectworkersinvestintheserviceusers.Asyouwillseefromtheresultsofoursurveysandquotesfrompeoplewithmentalill-health,careersandprofessionals,thisanalysishasshownthatitishardtofindalternativeinterventionsthatcouldproducethesametherapeuticresultsasGardeninginMind.Manystakeholderswouldratherdescribethebenefitsoftheprojectas‘invaluable.’

Thelownumbersofusersinvolvedmeansthatthereneedstobesomecautionindrawingconclusionsabouttheimpactofthistypeofinterventionforpeoplewithmentalill-healthgenerally.Itwasnotedthatthemajorityofthepeoplewithmentalill-healthlivedinstablelocalaccommodation,manyasMindresidentsorwithfamily.Itwasalsonotedthat,whilefemaleusersenjoygreatbenefitfromtheproject,theyrepresentonlyasmallfractionofthetotalduringtheperiod,althoughweunderstandtheremaytypicallybeahigherpercentage.ThisisconsideredunderRecommendations.

ObservationsDuringthestudy,theCSRDSresearchteamobservedwhileadministeringthequestionnaireandalsowhileconversinginferredthattheendbeneficiaries,areveryhappyandcontentwithalltheprogramsundertakenbyJSLanditsfoundationatHisarandJajpur.Morethan84%ofthebeneficiariessurveyedhavebeenpositivelyimpactedbytheprogramsrunbyJSLandwereveryexcitedwiththeemploymentopportunitiesthattheyhavegotafterbeingtrained.Thenewopportunitiesthatexistintheirfamilymembersduetoenhancedspendingcapacityandincreaseinawarenesslevelsofthecommunityshowsintheirenthusiasmduringthesurvey.Someselfinitiatedbeneficiarieshavealreadyformedteamstoidentifywaystousetheirnewfoundskillstoenhancetheirincomegeneratingpossibilities.Recommendations

f) TheCSRDSteamobservedthataveryhighnumberofmenstruatingwomenintheareas

surveyed,donothaveaccesstosanitaryproducts,whichposesabigthreattotheirhealth.Toencourageuseofsanitarynapkins,thegovernmentprovidesnapkinstogirlsfromBPLfamiliesatsubsidizedrates.SomestategovernmentshavealsobeenpromotingnapkinspreparedbySHGsbyopening'mobileexhibitioncentres'sothattheSHGmemberscouldeffectivelymarkettheirproductsandreachouttoconsumerslocatedinremoteplaces.JindalFoundationshouldrequesttheCentral/StategovernmentforsubsidytohelpreducethepricesofthenapkinsmanaufacturedunderSahajaunder50%subsidy.Thiswouldnotonlyincreasetheadoptionofthenapkinsbytheteenagersinthecommunityandcausethesocialchangeinbehaviorthatthegovernmentseeks.

servicesfollowedbysystemicqualitychecksandrolledintoretaildistributionnetworkatdistrictlevel.Thiswouldenableeachverticaltobeself-sustainableandalsoenableJSFtohavesomesurplustoexpanditsprograms.

ItwasobservedduringtheinterviewingofthebeneficiariesatJajpur,thatmostbeneficiariesweretendingtobedependentonJindalStainlessCSRteamforhelpingivingthememploymentoptionsinthefuture.Besideslivelihoodandskillstraining,JSFshouldidentifyfutureenterprisesandfuturemanagersamongthebeneficiariesbeingtrainingtocreatesocialentrepreneursofthefuture.Theycanbecomejobproviderstoothersinthecommunity.

1. Enterprisemodelinpoultryfarmingcanbedonebygivingassistancetoindividualstoupscaletheirenterpriseandincreasetheirincomes.FinancialassistancemayberequiredtosupportthemtotaketheirenterprisefromrearingtwentyChickenstoatleastrear100chickenandleaptowardssustainability.

2. Productswithgroundnutasabasecanbeaddedintheproductlineforsales.

3. MushroomCultivationasabusinessventurecoupledwithaccesstomarketcanbeaddedtothecurrententerprisesrunbytheSHG's.

4. Trainingmodulesonmobilerepairingandautomobiledrivingoranyothertrades/servicescameoutwhilediscussingwiththerespondents.

5. Exposurevisitstoindustriesforskillenhancementaswellascapacitybuildingoutsidethestatecanhelpinbuildingconfidenceandfeelingempowered.

6. Thesanitarynapkinunitwantstomanufacturepadswithwingsandthusseemsreadytoupscaletheirproduction.

HISAR

1. Itwasobservedthatthefarmersweremoreselfinitiatedinfindingmarketsaccessfortheirproduce.ThesamewasnotobservedinhandicraftsbutwassomewhatobservedintailoringinHisar,whereintheyhavebeenbuildingcapacityandskills.SomehelpinforwardmarketlinkagemayberequiredfromtheJSLteamtodevelopforhandicrafts.

2. Entrepreneurshiptrainingfortheyounggirlssothattheyareequippedwiththeskillstosetuptheirownenterpriseevenaftermarriage.

3. Provisionoffinancialassistancecouldbemadeformoreindividualenterprisesamongwomen,atthevillageleveloralsoatcolonylevel.

EvidencethatLivelihoodandtrainingactivitiesconductedbyJSFteamiseffectiveisreflectedinthisreport.Thestudyobservesthatthereisconsiderableroomforexpansionoftheseactivitiesinotherareastoincreasesocialimpact.

Thisstudyconcludesthatthetrainingmodelusedhasbeenaneffectiveinterventionforwomenempowerment and many people who are indirect beneficiaries have also experienced socialupliftmentandthathasproducedsubstantialsocialreturnsinthecommunity.

“ComputereducationprogramandtheHoleintheWall”programlookatreducingthedigitaldividebetweenchildrenstudyinginprivateschoolsandthosestudyingingovernmentschools.TheadulteducationprogrambeingrunthroughtheVikasKendrasarebeingrunwithanaimtoprovidebasicliteracytowomen.

Undereducation5Bridgecoursecenters,5RemedialEducationcenters,twocomputerlaboratoriesand6interactiveselflearningcomputerprogramsarebeingrunintheperipheralvillagesofourplantlocationinJajpurinpartnershipwithaNGOSmileFoundation.

RemedialEducationProgram:

Fiveremedialeducationcentre’shadbeenstartedasaninterventiontoincreasetheperformanceofthestudentsat5differentschools.Withcontinuedeffortsovertheyears,drasticchangeshavebeenseenintheperformanceofthestudentsintheseadoptedschools.

Thisyear174studentshadappearedfortheirhighersecondaryexaminationoutofwhich135(78%)studentshavepassedtheexam.JakhpuraHighSchoolachieved100%resultandaround22%studentspassedwithfirstdivisionmarks.Thisyearagaingirlshaveperformedbetterwith,Ms.AnbhaParidaofJakhpuraSchoolachieving91%marks.

298studentsinfiveHighSchoolstookadmissionintheRemedialEducationPrograminthemonthofAprill-11.

ExposureVisitProgram:

Atwodayexposurevisitwasorganizedstudentsfromtheremedialcenters.Theexposurevisitinvolved–visitstovarioushistoricalplacesinthestate,sharingofMissionEducationProjectwiththeFinanceMinisterofOdisha,addressingpressatRedCrossBhawan,Bhubaneswar,visitingPuriandNandankananaetc.

ComputerEducationProgram

TheComputerEducationProgramisbeingimplementedattheBudhirajaHighSchool,DanagadiandGulamRasulSchool.Duringtheyear,studentsgotcomprehensiveknowledgeoncomputerfundamentals,MSWord,Excel,PowerPoint,paint,internet,publisheretc.305studentsenrolledintheprogram,therehasbeenalotofinterestamongstudentstobeenrollforcomputers.

HoleintheWall(HiWEL)LearningCentre’s:Holeinthewallisauniqueselflearningcomputerbasedprogramforchildren.Asthenamesuggests,itisaninitiativewhichhasacomputersystemintheopenwhichcanbeaccessedbythechildreninthecommunityoraschoolwithoutrestrictions.Theprogramencourageschildrentoexplorethecomputersystemontheirownandexplorethevariouslearningprogramsonmaths,science,cleanliness,sanitation,alsoinvolvesinteractivecomputerbasedexercisesforchildren.Sixunitshavebeeninstalledin6governmentschoolsatvariouslocationsinJajpur.

EducationthroughSportsThisprogramisfocusedonunderprivilegedchildrenandlooksatenhancingtheirsportsskillsontheplaygroundandoverallpersonalitydevelopmentthroughsports.Throughgamestheprogramaddressesissueslikeeducation,personalhygiene,friendship,gendersensitivity,leadershipskills,communicationskillsetc.1000childrenresidinginShivColony,SuryaNagar,JILcolony,JindalColony&NaharColonyarebenefittingfromtheprogram.

Alltheseinitiativesaimatprovidingqualityhealthcareservicesandalsoworkonpreventivecarebycreatingawarenessinthecommunityonvariousdiseases.Alongwithprovidinghealthcarefacilitiesandoutreachfacilities,specificinterventionshavebeendesignedonHIV/AIDSandtoaddresstheissueofFemaleFeticide.TheprogramonfemalefeticideisbeingimplementedinHisarandfocusesoncreatingawarenessabouttheissueandcloselymonitoringstakeholderslikemarriedwomen,youngmothers,localhospitalsandhealthprofessionalsinthearea.OneofthebiggestchallengefacedbyJindalStainlessLimitedwhileaddressingtheHealthrelatedissuesistheaccessibilityofhealthservices.Theissuesofaccessibilitywereoftwokinds–onewaslimitedorlowqualityhealthfacilitiesavailableandthesecondwasthelackofawarenessamongthecommunitywhichledtolimiteduseoftheavailablehealthcarefacilities.

• JSLneedstoestablishaconsistentandrobustmonitoringandevaluationmechanismtoensuretimelyreportsthatwillcreateasustainedhigherimpactandhealthySROIinthefuture.

• JSLshouldundertakeSROIstudiesannuallyinallthelocationswhereprogramsareimplemented.Itwillhelpunderstandwhichprogramsaremoreimpactfulandwhichneedstobemoreproductiveorefficientorwhichcanbedropped.

• Sincecapitalexpenditureincurredishighwhenprogramswerelaunched,SROIcalculatedisfoundtoberelativelylow.Withtimeasmorebeneficiariesgetimpacted,creatingacompoundingeffect,theeffectivecostsperheadwillgodownandSROIvalueswillincreaseproportionately.SROIstudyshouldalsobeconductedforothersocialinitiativesundertakenbyJSLwhichhavenotbeenpartofthisstudy.

• MostoftherespondentshaveshownalevelofsatisfactionandhappinesswiththeinitiativesundertakenbyJSLandthatisaveryencouraging.Thesameshouldbecommunicatedtostakeholderslikethegovernmentbodiesandagenciesandalsotheneighboringvillagestoenhancefutureengagementpossibilitiesandsupportinthefuture.

• JSFcanexplorecreatingaJSLumbrellabrandunderwhichalltheSelfhelpgroupscanselltheirproductsinthefuturewhichwillbringvisibilitytothegoodworkdonebyJSF.Itwillalsocreateacorporatizedenvironmentintheselfhelpgroupsandimprovesthequalityanddeliveryoftheproducts.

Thismayhelpcreatehighermarginstotheseproductswhichcanmakecurrentprogramssustainableandthesocietywouldhavemoresocialentrepreneurswhocanprovidejobstoothersinthecommunity.
