JINGILI SCHOOL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER Dear Parents/Carers In the media recently you would have heard of a number of threats made to schools. As you can imagine we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously and have an Emergency Management Plan in place to deal with these events should they arise. If the need arises the quickest way for us to inform parents is through the Skoolbag App which many of you have downloaded onto your phone. Please remember though, our first priority is the safety of children and staff, prior to making contact with parents. This year a key learning focus will be to improve writing across the school. Some of our teachers will be working with Kaye Baldock as part of the region’s Assessment Capable Writers Project . On the back page of this newsletter is a very well designed persuasive writing piece by Daphne Cholakos. Sport is an important and valued part of our school program. As well as weekly PE lessons with Mrs Turner, many of our older students enjoy taking part in Gala Days which are held throughout the year. Others try out for selection in regional and territory sports teams. Congratulations to Xavier Vallejo and Joseph De Luca who were recently selected to represent the Darwin Region in the 12 years and under basketball team. I have had some concerns raised about the Drop Off Zone, especially in the way it’s used in the morning. Please remember to drive all the way to the end of the drop-off zone or the last clear parking space when dropping off or picking up students. For safety reasons please encourage children to leave and enter the car via the footpath. Thank-you for helping to keep our students safe. Next Monday evening at 6:30 is our first School Council meeting for the year. All are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held in the staff room. Dear Parents/Carers

In the media recently you would have heard of a number of threats made to schools. As you can

imagine we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously and have an Emergency Management

Plan in place to deal with these events should they arise. If the need arises the quickest way for us to

inform parents is through the Skoolbag App which many of you have downloaded onto your phone. Please

remember though, our first priority is the safety of children and staff, prior to making contact with parents.

This year a key learning focus will be to improve writing across the school. Some of our teachers will be

working with Kaye Baldock as part of the region’s Assessment Capable Writers Project. On the back page of

this newsletter is a very well designed persuasive writing piece by Daphne Cholakos.

Sport is an important and valued part of our school program. As well as weekly PE lessons with Mrs Turner,

many of our older students enjoy taking part in Gala Days which are held throughout the year. Others try out

for selection in regional and territory sports teams. Congratulations to Xavier Vallejo and Joseph De Luca who

were recently selected to represent the Darwin Region in the 12 years and under basketball team.

I have had some concerns raised about the Drop Off Zone, especially in the way it’s used in the morning.

Please remember to drive all the way to the end of the drop-off zone or the last clear parking space when

dropping off or picking up students. For safety reasons please encourage children to leave and enter the car

via the footpath. Thank-you for helping to keep our students safe.

Next Monday evening at 6:30 is our first School Council meeting for the year. All are welcome to attend.

The meeting will be held in the staff room.

CHILDREN ON TIME

& READY TO LEARN

PRESCHOOL NEWS Mr Derek Pugh put on an impromptu magic show for Ms Metcalf’s morning group on Wednesday. They were very excited!

You should have received information this week regarding the Preschool satay stall at the Jingili Primary School’s International Markets on Thursday 17th March. We are requesting cash donations towards the cost of purchasing non-peanut chicken satays, and for helpers to set up the stall and assist with cooking and sales. Any contributions, financial or practical, would be greatly appreciated! Proceeds from this Term’s fund raising will go towards the purchase of additional smaller trikes for the children to ride during outside Investigations. We have practiced both the ‘invacuation’ and ‘evacuation’ procedures with the Preschool children over the past weeks. The children and staff managed these calmly and responsibly – well done Preschoolers! To meet the requirements of the NQS we are required to practice our emergency procedures every three months. Thank you for your consistent contributions of three pieces of fruit each week for Morning and Afternoon tea. We currently have enough apples and oranges for at least the next week or two. Perhaps over the next fortnight your weekly contribution could be limited to ONE piece while we eat the backlog! The children are particularly enjoying strawberries, bananas, melon and other healthy snacks such as rice crackers, cheese and dried fruit. The next Jingili School Community Council Meeting is on Monday 29th February at 6.30pm in the Primary School staff room. Thanks you to Melanie Mayor and Belinda Small who have volunteered to share the position of Preschool Parent Representative. All interested parents are welcome to attend the meetings. A reminder that the next Preschool Parent Advisory Group meeting will be held at Preschool on Friday 4th March at 11.30am. We would love more parents to come along! Children are also welcome. Have a great week, The Preschool Team

Thanks to Mrs Stav for the wonderful basil she donated to our program. Students, Kylie Highman and Jodi R made Jingili’s delightful basil pesto with the basil in class and sold the produce at our assembly. Students learn the value of processing and producing our basil pesto to sell at assemblies and it’s wonderful for the community to support our program by purchasing our produce. Thank you!! A special thanks to Trish Graham who also helps out with our assembly produce stall. Without our volunteers, our program and community wouldn’t be as rich as it is!! We’d love to see you in the kitchen or garden anytime!! Jodi & Jodi

Do you think everybody should play a sport? How do you think Usain Bolt became a wise man? From sitting on the couch all day or from getting use of his surroundings? Everyone should play a sport because it will help you with your team and social skills, its great motivation and it’ll build your confidence. Firstly, it’s great for your health and can stop diseases. Sport can stop laziness by giving you something to do and getting you motivated. While you are outside you are limiting your technology use and doing something good for your eyes. Evidence suggests that active and physical children are more likely to become active and physical adults. Physical inactivity is the fourth biggest cause of death because of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), these include heart disease, stroke, diabetes andcancers. These diseases lead to over three million preventable deaths. Secondly, it will build your confidence up and will help you cope with things. A lot of people are not confident in themselves for most of their life and sport can bring out the best in them. When you win in a game of sport you feel like you have achieved the best. Only 70% of boys and 56% of girls participate in sport because they are confident unlike others. Thirdly, you will be part of a team. When you are part of a team you will have to communicate face to face with other people instead of on technology. With people around you they will help you cope with winning or losing and help you with your emotions. Shyness is a big part of everyone’s life and being a part of a team can help you with your social skills. Did you know that only 6 out of 10 children aged between 5 and 14 years of age participate in sport outside of school? Usain Bolt did all of these things to achieve his goal. He was confident, active and loved being a part of a team. We need more people like Usain Bolt in our world, therefore sport should be a part of our lives. Don’t be lazy just be crazy!
