Master Cesar Porto

Page 4: JIU JITSU BRAZILIAN Welcome to - bjjlotusclub.com · great passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu due to its effectiveness, reliability and ... - Royce Gracie 14 15. IBJJF Grading System:

“ I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu around 1997 with the Konde Coma Team back in Brazil where I had the opportunity to meet many great teachers and training partners.A few years later, I on my blue belt, I met for the first time, who soon became my Sensei until the current day.

Back then, Master Cesar Porto was already an experienced Black Belt who became a good friend and a real Sensei, teaching me the art of Jiu Jitsu, skills and responsibilities. After more than 18 years as his student, I’m grateful to have had him as my reference.

I dedicate this short summary of my Jiu Jitsu path to him and to my mother, the true heroine behind the curtains of my history.

At the age of 5 my mother introduced me to Karate-Do, waking up at 6am training day to bring her son to the Karate School. I practiced Karate Shotokan all the way to my early teenage years. After that, I also practiced a few years of Full Contact, Kung-Fu, Aikido, and Capoeira. I eventually started to train Jiu Jitsu when I was 18 years old and I have been practicing ever since.

I believe that all martial arts have them own pros and cons, however I have always had a great passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu due to its effectiveness, reliability and philosophy. It is a martial art that focuses on realistic techniques, teaches self control, timing and patience. It is one of the few effective modern martial arts that allows the physically weaker individual to win over the stronger.

The journey towards the black belt rely basically in dedication and persistence, that is the key, everything else enriches the experience.

On my path towards my black belt I also managed to become the Espírito Santo State Champion twice, also in 2002 I won the title of Brazilian National Champion in São Paulo."

– Kaio Andrade

Kaio Andrade’s HistoryKaio has extensive experience in teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on a competitive level and is a former Brazilian National Champion.

- Training

_Do not leave or step on to the mat without advising the instructor, he’s counting on you.

_Pay attention when you are learning or sharing your knowledge, be patient in both

cases.

- When rolling

_Always start on knees, except when the instructor sets scenarios.

_When rolling, the higher belts have preference over the mat area.

_Had an accident? Check that your partner is ok before resuming the match.

Note: Failure to comply with the above can result in a verbal warning, temporary ban, or

cancellation of membership.

Our Code of Conduct is

divided into :❖ Dojo Etiquette

❖ Hygiene Guidelines

The idea behind the items below is to create a cozy and pleasant environment for the whole family.

- Any time

_If you feel you’re having a problem or are uncomfortable about anything please

advise the instructor. They will address the matter in the best possible way.

_Be on time for classes. This means being in the gym before the class starts.

_Set your phone to silent during class time, otherwise let the instructor know.

_No shoes/thongs/sandals on the mat under any circumstances.

_Be friendly and respectful to your training partners.

_Violence, foul language, harassment, discrimination or any other kind of bad

behaviour will not be tolerated. (This rule is not limited to practicing students, it

applies to EVERYONE who enters the gym.)

Code of Conduct Dojo Etiquette

- Upon arriving

_Bow before you enter or leave the mat - it is a sign of respect and

also is a “switch on” moment.

_Do not enter the mat when another class is happening unless you

are invited to do so.

_If you are late, please wait outside the mat, until the instructor

invites you to step on.

_Make sure to greet the instructor when stepping on the mat;

_Greet those that arrived before you. Is a great way to show respect

and create a warm atmosphere in our dojo (if you’re late, do it during

break time).

- Keep your Gi clean and tidy.

- Be sure your hands and feet are

clean before a BJJ session.

- When you leave the mat, please use appropriate footwear.

- Be sure to properly cover any cuts or wounds - no bleeding on your partner or the mats. If

. you are temporarily unfit to train, give your body some time to get heal.

- If you feel unwell or suspect a virus or flu, please stay at home to avoid spreading it.

- Any kind of jewellery is forbidden in BJJ sessions.

- Bring your own water bottle - keeping yourself hydrated is crucial.

- Keep your finger and toe nails trimmed and clean.

- Don’t leave anything behind (e.g. athletic tape that may have fallen off.).

- Wash your BJJ Gi / No-Gi often to prevent any body odor and skin diseases.

Hygiene Guidelines The Journey journey is about to begin. I can guarantee you there will be a lot of

“good moments” and ”not so good moments”. Be happy and enjoy the good moments, but

don’t forget to be grateful and confidently face the “not so good moments” because it is in

these moments that we forge ourselves and make the “good moments” meaningful.

Here’s some tips to help you to get the most of it:

The Warm-Up - Certainly one of the most important parts of the session for preventing injuries, it is

also the moment that you teach your body to move properly.

- Make an effort to join your peers in counting aloud the movements when asked.

- Focus on your body, your muscles and your tendons: make every move count.

- Find and respect your limit, to be able to extend it rather than reduce it.

Class Time

- Be focused in class - now is BJJ time.

- Try to listen more than speak.

- Be sure that you understand the movement before applying it.

- Do not waste time - every repetition is an opportunity to improve your skill. Focus on

getting faster/timing, precision/accuracy, balance/gravity & power.

After Class

- Now it is your turn to customise your path. At our dojo there are a few minutes of

open mat daily, as often as possible. This allows you to:

- Invite a friend to do an extra roll or to practice specific drills.

- Practice some solo drills, improving how your body moves.

- Ask a higher belt questions or for tips about a specific scenario/skill.

Your Attention!

More @ http://ibjjf.com/uniform/

The Belt- Uniforms are required for all classes to ensure that hygiene and safety are adhered to,

providing an ideal training environment for every member.

- A student is not permitted to train using a gi without the team patches.

- Every new student has one month from the first day of class to get their own gi.

- When training daily, it is recommended to have at

least two sets of Gis.

- Do not wash your Gi using hot water.

- Do not dry your Gi using a clothes dryer.

- Keep your Gi with you all the times when at the

dojo, including your belt.

The BJJ-GIThe belt is used to keep your Gi tidy, but it’s more than that. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the belt

represents our path on this great journey.

The stripes and colors indicate the level of your knowledge, giving you some rights, but

also responsibilities, when we are in our dojo.

There are 5 main color belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black.

The period needed to reach the black belt will vary depending on the dedication,

commitment, will-power and perseverance, along many other skills developed on the

way.

However, the belt shouldn’t be the goal.

The knowledge represented by it is what

you must aim for, that is the milestone.

A famous expression says:

- “A black belt only covers two inches of

your ass. You have to cover the rest.”

The meaning of Osu

Some references: - Mmanews [https://mymmanews.com/what-does-oss-mean-in-regards-to-bjj/] - Google [https://www.google.com.au/search?q=oss+bjj&oq=oss+bjj]

There are many very interesting theories about the meaning of Osu (pronounced

Oss) and we know from linguistics that there are many times when a different

culture appropriates words from another. They change the meaning, sometimes

slightly, sometimes completely.

Saying that, at our dojo, Osu is used in many situations. However, in all these

situations, besides the meaning fitted to that scenario, Osu means you’re

present in mind & body at that moment and paying attention. In other words: it

is a sign of respect between yourself and who you are communicating with.

You must use your diaphragm to pronounce it and really mean it when say it.

Use Osu:

- When stepping on the mat:

1. To create awareness of your own body avoiding injuries and accidents.

2. To show respect to all those are on the mat before you or after you leave.

- When lining up: To say thanks to your training partners the bjj session,

expecting them to persevere regardless the result of that training session.

- After listening the instructor or Sensei: As an answer like: ‘I understood’.

- After training, when leaving the dojo, again, Osu is a mix between bye, thank

you, we shall always persevere, I'll see you next time.

Balance is the keyword in the white belt universe.

With this belt you will start to learn how to improve your balance:

physically and emotionally. You are going to learn different ways to

move your body, find new points of balance and keep calm under

stressful situations.

As if the goal above was not challenging enough, you will be

swimming in a sea of new skills to be mastered, and believe me,

many times you will feel like you are drowning.

The first months are a time of survival, when you will learn the

importance of: tapping out, moving at the right time, saving energy to

be able to bounce back. So, you will be able to start practicing

dominant positions.

It is expected that you will become familiar and comfortable with all

basic positions/scenarios and be able to attack or defend yourself

from that position.
