The World Jersey Cattle Burro visited Genetics Australia on the 17th of May, as part of their “Gold Rush Down Under Tour”. Over seventy Jersey enthusiasts from around the globe spent the day at Parwan Park in Bacchus Marsh, learning more about:

• The development of the Jersey breed in Australia.• The Australian Dairy Industry.• Jersey genomics in Australia.• The growing demand for Australian Jersey genetics

internationally.• And the modern day Australian Jersey Cow, that our

breeders demand.

The visit was a great opportunity to reflect on the past, look at the present and gaze into the future. All Jersey breeders in Australia should feel proud of the progress and development of the breed, to now have some of the breeds best genetics globally.

Australian breeders have a long passionate history with the Jersey cow dating back to the first Jersey cows arriving to Australia in 1829. Some of the early documented Jerseys were at Kameruka in 1834 with the Kameruka Estate stud still in existence. The Anderson family continue to make an enormous contribution to the breed. Their long and proud history with the Jersey cows dates back to John Anderson and some of the first Jersey in Victoria back in 1851.

The first official Australian breed group was formed in 1899 as the Australasian Jersey Herd Society. The inaugural meeting took place at the Arcadia Hotel and comprised of a number of breeders that were exhibiting Jersey cattle at the Sydney Royal show.

Genetics Australia began Progeny Testing Jersey bulls in the late 1950’s. Dundee Dandy “DD” was one of the early graduates and he had an enormous impact on the breeds development with the advent of wide spread Artificial Insemination. Dundee Dandy sired many great cows, but his major impact came through his son Lang Park Spotted Dan “SPOT” and intern SPOT sired one of the breeds true all-time greats, Yarravale Danny Boy “YDB”. YDB still holds the record for siring the Jersey cows ever in Australia.

During the mid 1970’s and 1980’s the genetics that were progressing the breed were local sires. The most popular sires of the time had a common theme as they were sired by bulls proven in New Zealand. The popular sire of this era included;

• Oakbrae Noble Monarch OOBL sired by Hawthorn Grove, Monarch, NZ.

• Oakbrae Dictator OADI sired by Puhinui Mons, Dictator, NZ.

• Rosecroft Master Owl ROSE sired by Ridge Lee, Master Owl, NZ.

• Green Pine Dante GANT sired by Glanton Red, Dante, NZ.

• Maryvale Senator MVS as an imported sire.

In the mid 1980’s the breed was at cross roads. There was some dissatisfaction among commercial dairy farmers with smaller framed Jersey cows that were struggling to compete with Holsteins and Jersey calves that did not have the vigour and growth that was required. Victorian Artificial Breeders embarked on a grade breeding programme to add to the breeds woes as a large number of Jerseys were bred and converted to Holstein.

Master Breeders Recognised Pat and Rosemary Roache were awarded with the Jersey

Australia Elite Sire Award for one of the breeds all-time great sires in LARFALOT.

Trevor Saunders president of Jersey Australia made a special presentation to the Roaches on the outstanding success of LARFALOT, still ranked in the top ten sires available now with second crop daughters.

To top off their day the Lightwood stud was added to the “Breeders Honour Roll” in recognition of the outstanding contribution to Genetics Australia and the Australian Dairy industry through the provision of elite genetics.

Pat and Rosemary’s Lightwood Jersey bred the outstanding proven sire OUTINFRONT, they bred the dam of BADGER Lightwood Bambi and LARFALOT now growing to be one of the all-time great Jersey sires.

In the 21st century the breed has adapted to perform under Australia’s farming conditions. The Australian Jersey cow is unique as she can produce of pasture, respond efficiently with supplementary feed or produce of a total mixed ration. Australia’s unique open door breeding philosophies has assisted our population’s development. We have a unique and diverse mix of global blood lines contributing to the progress. This combined with bulls bred and performing under Australian farming conditions continues breed progress.

Many of Australia’s favourite proven sires of recent times have a unique combination of the best international sires. All Jersey populations, Canada, the US, New Zealand, Denmark and Australia have contributed to our genetic gain and diversity.

One of the highlights of the visit was the bull inspections. It was great to see some of the breeds house hold names in the flesh. LARFALOT, BADGER, GAINFUL, new graduates DELIAN and NAVARIAN and some breed leading genomic sires AUSSIEGOLD, KEVIN, TAHBILK and VOYAGEDALE. The group was fortunate to see the dams of AUSSIEGOLD and VOYAGEDALE as part of the herd tours.

Rob Derksen gave the group a presentation on the existing and rapidly developing export markets for Genetics Australia and highlighted the growing international demand for Australian proven genetics.

Greg Tiller discussed with the group Australian Jersey genomics and talked about the rapid uptake among the breeders with this exciting new technology. The genomic testing has highlighted some of the great cows and cow families with in the

20 Jersey Journal – July/August 2013

Rapid rate of genetic gainPaul Mumford (Gelbeado Park) was

in for a pleasant surprise when he saw his herd’s latest Genetic

Progress Report: he’d made a rapid rate of gain in the herd’s genetic merit for profit, type, fat and protein.

Paul and his wife, Lisa, dairy at Yarram in Gippsland Victoria with their children, Jess, Chloe and Bryce. In the coming season the split calving herd will peak at 450 cows. Last year’s 305-day average production was 6398L with 253kg protein and 330kg fat. The feeding system is pasture based with about 1.3t concentrate per cow each year fed in the dairy plus distillers syrup.

Paul says he’s always keen to increase production, but only if it is profitable.

“I’m just as happy if we increase fat and protein but not milk volume because that means more value from less milk,” he said.

When it comes to breeding Paul says he wants everything.

“I’m looking for the most efficient cows possible so I want high production but I also want high fat, high protein and high type.”

And amazingly, he is achieving just that. The herd’s Genetic Progress Report indicates the bulls selected over past 10 years have produced Jersey cows with genetic trends that have improved profit, production, overall type, longevity, fertility and mastitis resistance.

The report also shows sharp increases in the herd’s Australian Profit Ranking (APR), overall type, fat and protein since about 2008.

Paul puts these rapid gains down to placing higher value on the APR and Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) in recent years.

“I became involved in one of Jersey Australia’s committees which gave me a much better understanding of how the Australian system works. I realised that the APR and ABVs are the best way to identify bulls whose daughters will perform well under Australian conditions,” he said.

Paul has always placed a high priority on type.

“Our furthest paddock is 3km away so we need cows with good feet and legs.”

His Genetic Progress Report shows that it’s possible to improve type, production and components simultaneously. And his system is surprisingly simple.

“We don’t limit ourselves to a single genetics company. But we do tend to limit ourselves to sires with high APRs. Then we look at their ranking for the traits we want to improve.”

Paul says the Good Bulls Guide makes the process very easy.

“I know that any bull listed in the Good Bulls Guide is a good bull. So I scan the Jersey lists for bulls that feature in multiple lists, especially profit and overall type. It doesn’t take long to identify the stand out bulls.”

Paul is very encouraged that the herd’s latest Genetic Progress Report confirms his breeding decisions are achieving his objectives. The report will also influence his future decisions.

“Although we’ve made steady improvements in mastitis resistance and fertility, our herd is tracking closely with the national average for these traits. Now that we can track progress with these traits we might start paying a bit more attention to them when selecting sires. But type and profit will continue to be our highest priorities.”

Xhead: Breeding programThe entire milking herd is joined to AI

with most heifers mated naturally. In the past Paul has used 20-30%

progeny test bulls but in recent years he’s leaned more towards young genomic sires. The amount of embryo transfers varies from year to year.

“We have done a bit more ET work this year as we are preparing for our first a sale in 2014 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing the stud.”

Paul expects genomic testing of cows to play an increasing role in his breeding program. He participated in the Jernomics project, having 250 cows tested.

“The results were very interesting as the genomic values for many of our cows were higher than expected. It is still early days for cow genomic testing but I can see a couple of applications for our herd in the future, such as identifying elite cows to flush,” he said.

23Jersey Journal – July/August 2013

Ellie later realised that the bag of ribbons was connected to the pictures she had also discovered of her father winning awards at dairy shows.

Only 10 years later, Ellie came home from 2013 International Dairy Week with more ribbons for her own growing collection. She won Junior Champion Heifer (Junior Leader). She then went on to win Reserve Champion Heifer in the open section of the youth show with her favourite cow from her own Ellie Mae Jerseys stud, two-year-old Wallacedale Larbuck Melanie.

Dad’s old ribbons inspire teenager’s IDW successEllie Hourigan was only four years old when she discovered a bag in her father’s shed that would change her childhood.

The Hourigan family now milks 200 registered Jerseys on their 280ha farm just outside Wangaratta, about 250km north-east of Melbourne. The team there also includes Darryn’s wife Emily, as well as Ellie’s sister Grace and brother Bailey. The farm grows most of its own feed on its red and grey loam soils irrigated with an annual 300ML allocation.

The farm was founded 60 years ago by Darryn’s parents Keith and Maureen with Jersey bloodlines imported from New Zealand. That started a herd which the Hourigans now breed with semen from America and Canada. Darryn says they use sires including Van Halem, Elton, Sultan, T-Bone and Spiritual. Darryn also breeds with local local bulls such as Kaarmona Marquis and Kaarmona Jackal.

He says the herd has a classification average around 87 points. The Jerseys are this year expected to average 6200 litres of milk at 320 kg of fat and 241 kg of protein supplied to the Murray Goulburn co-op. The Darryn Vale stud also sells about 30 Jersey bulls each year.

Darryn breeds for type and production, but says he’s a stickler for cows that he enjoys milking – no-fuss good-temperament cows that are easy to handle. He’s the president of Victoria’s North East Jersey Cattle Club, and says the future is bright for Jerseys as long as the broader dairy industry is kept viable and profitable.

Darryn enjoys the club’s on-farm challenges, where his 93-point cow Darrynvale Bhama Favour 6 has won her class in five consecutive years. She has also been successful with two wins in the Semex Great Southern Challenge.

After her infant games with her father’s ribbons, Ellie began to help with the calves, do the occasional milking, and help feed the cows.

At the age of 10, she encouraged the family to get back showing.

In her first year at Wangaratta show, Ellie was beaten by her older brother Bailey. But she beat him the next year, and began competing at International Dairy Week in 2011. As well as the ribbons, this year Ellie won the admiration of

many Jersey breeders for her knowledge, optimism and enthusiasm.

Ellie says she loves Jerseys because they are gentle and easy to handle, but still always show personality. She likes Jerseys with lots of type that give lots of milk: “I look for a nice tall and upstanding cow with the correct udder correct teat placement, and something that catches your eye.” She has noticed that “Jerseys are growing in size a fair bit”, but thinks that’s good as it gives them plenty of capacity.

She enjoys International Dairy Week: “It’s a good place to get to know people and learn lots of stuff about cows.” She says her high school friends enjoy hearing about her show successes. “It’s hard work, but its fun,” she says of IDW. “I enjoy it, so it’s not that bad.”

Ellie already has hopes to one day take over the farm from her dad, but he says she’ll have to come to work for him first!

Darryn and Ellie agree that there are rewards for all the work that goes into showing.

“I just enjoy the company of people, and getting your stock out for people to look at,” Darryn says. “I know it’s a terrible lot of work, and a lot of commitment to do it properly, but it spurs you on to get your cattle out and be recognised.

“There’s the social side of it as well. You see people you might only see once a year at the show, but you catch up and you have a really great time.

“You catch up, and I have renewed friendships from 16 or 17 years ago when I used to show cows.

“It’s a great spirit – it’s like a little community I suppose.”

The bag was full of ribbons that her dad Darryn had won with

his Jersey cows before he gave up showing to spend more time with his young family.

“Merseybank ELTONS Claire EX92” has become a household name amongst Australian jersey breeders over the last four years. Following her being crowned the inaugural Great Australian Challenge Champion Cow last week it won’t be long and she will be recognized as a Jersey icon around the globe.

An original progeny test daughter of Cairnbrae Jaces ELTON, Claire is no stranger to On Farm Challenge success. She has won her class at club level as a 2 year-old, 3 year-old, 4 year-old and 5 year-old and powered on to be Great Southern Challenge Champion for her

age group three of these four years (Reserve Champion the other year after being judged following a flush).

Claire’s breeders, Geoff & Anne Heazelwood of Latrobe, Tasmania, have continued to use ELTON heavily every year since Claire and other progeny test daughters entered the dairy at Merseybank Jerseys. Claire’s dam has even been flushed to ELTON. ABS is currently considering sons of Claire to enter our Primetime program.

In her most recent completed lactation, Claire produced 9048 litres of milk with 406 kilograms of fat and 350 kilograms of protein

in 300 days, with a PI of 130. Claire contributed to a new breed average set from the IDW Jersey Showcase Sale in 2012 - her package of 5 embryos sold for $5,500.

ELTON has become the consistency King of the breed, siring strong, open, capacious cows with good udders. He has retained a position in the top three Jersey bulls since he first graduated in 2009. Further to this his figures increased when hundreds of second-crop daughters were added to his April 2013 proof. ABS’ first ELTON son, CARILLA, is currently available through our Primetime program.

Maisie’s Grown up Bread and Butter Pudding Ingredients• 125g cinnamon butter**• Stale bread, fruit bread or brioche

(approx 6-7 slices)• 180-200g mixed dried fruit, soaked in whisky• 3 eggs• 235ml Alexandrina Full Cream Jersey Milk

(available in 2L bottle)*• 235ml Alexandrina Pure Jersey Cream

(available in 300ml tub)*• grated lemon rind• a good measure of whisky• 60 g caster sugar• A good scrape of fresh nutmeg or mace (optional) MethodButter an overproof dish with some of the cinnamon butter. Spread the bread with the remaining butter, taking it right to the edge. You may remove crusts (if desired), and cut into neat triangles.

Take the fruit out of the whisky it has been soaking in.

Place the triangles neatly in the dish.

Sprinkle the fruit in between the slices evenly.

Beat the eggs, Pure Jersey Cream, Full Cream Jersey Milk and lemon rind together, adding any remaining whisky plus a good measure more!

Then add the sugar and nutmeg or mace if desired.

Pour mixture over the bread and fruit.

Sprinkle a little more sugar over the peaks and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for about 30 minutes or until it looks crisp and golden.

*for best results, use any good quality full cream jersey milk and a double cream (55% min fat is best).

**mixing 1 tablespoon of cinnamon into the butter to make an infused cinnamon butter

Udderly AdminIt’s was so great to see the amount of Futurity calf entries be

received into the office this year. It should be a reasonable sized prize pool for the 2012 born calves so good luck to the competitors! If you have heifers entered in previous years, I will be sending out the application reviews to you during August.

With Round 1 of Classification wrapped up, preparations have begun for Spring Round 2 Classification and Linear Trait Evaluations first nominations. This is a much bigger round and more preparation is required, so the earlier you can submit your application would be appreciated. You can find a copy of the application inside this issue of the Jersey Journal. Members Applications close on Friday 20th September 2013.

With the rare opportunities that I have, it was great to be able to join the World Jersey Tour for a few days recently. I had the opportunity to visit some of your farms and very much enjoyed it! I look forward to the next time we meet.

The girls and I have noticed that there are a number of transfers being received at Jersey House without the sale price. On the back of current pedigrees (you will find the old certificates don’t) there is a space requesting the sale price. We don’t want to charge the wrong fee for the transfer if we can avoid it. When all information is submitted at the same time, this makes for faster processing of the transfer.
