Welcome Letter
Welcome, JLN Leaders!
I am honored and thrilled to serve alongside you and our fabulous President,
Jennifer Hill, this year as the Junior League of Nashville's first Executive Vice
President. As you know, this is an important year of exciting change under our
new organizational structure, but our focus and mission remain the same: to be
leaders and volunteers, serving one another, our membership, and our community
as best we possibly can. Jennifer and I will work closely together this year to make
for a smooth transition as she leads the Governing Board to steer the future of the
League, and I lead the Management Team, which comprises all of the Vice
Presidents and Joint Council, to make this year our strongest yet.
I can't thank each of you enough for taking on a leadership role within the League.
So many of you are veteran leaders, while a significant number of you are on
Council for the first time, which will make for exciting energy and possibilities as
we collaborate throughout the year. We are so lucky to have such an incredible
group of determined, smart, compassionate, and innovative women leading JLN.
Remember that we are the front line for everything JLN does this year, and a
positive experience for each of our members starts with us. My charge to each of
you is this: be engaged in everything you do, ask for help when you need it, learn
from others, and help others grow. My door (or e-mail or phone line!) is always
open, and I am committed to learning and growing along with you.
I'm looking forward to an amazing year!
With warmest gratitude,
Jennifer Hillen
2015-2016 Executive Vice President
Junior League of Nashville
How will you this year?

Mission, Vision and Values
Mission
The Junior League of Nashville is an organization of women committed to promoting
voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through
the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively
educational and charitable. The Junior League of Nashville reaches out to women of all
races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and a commitment to
voluntarism.
Vision
The Junior League of Nashville is a premier women’s volunteer organization that offers our
members the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with others who are unified by a desire
to give back to our community. Through the talents of a diverse membership we will support and
enrich the lives of women, children and families in our community. Together we have greater
impact than we do individually.
Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
The Junior League welcomes all women who value our mission. We are committed to inclusive
environments of diverse individuals, organizations, and communities.
Values
The Junior League of Nashville accomplishes our Mission through the actions of women who share
our core values.
Community: We value engagement with our community to anticipate and address its needs
through education, service, and strategic partnerships.
Connection: We value opportunities for engagement with a diverse group of women to
develop lifelong personal and professional relationships.
Growth: We value a dynamic organization that develops and empowers our members to be
community volunteers and leaders.
"YOU are a JLN Advocate: Be ready with your elevator speech! No matter what your placement, YOU are a JLN advocate. This means that you represent our organization in the community and you have the power to spread our mission, whether you're delivering a formal presentation or just having a casual conversation with friends, family, people in the community, or potential members. We know that it may not be easy to articulate our mission off the top of your head, which is why you need an elevator speech - a clear, concise message about what JLN is and does, and why you're a part of this organization. If you get stuck, just remember “D.I.P.” because JLN: Develops the potential of women; Impacts the community; and, Promotes voluntarism. After that, just add your personal message.
Example: "Hi, my name is Kate, and I am a volunteer with the Junior League of Nashville. We are an organization that develops the potential of women, impacts our community, and promotes voluntarism. I'd love to help you get connected with all we have to offer..."

How to Have a Great Year at JLN! (And help your committee do the same)
1. Host an orientation for your committee in which you communicate the goal for the
year and explain how each person/role plays into achieving that goal. Also consider
discussing the skills that each member will learn or hone this year.
2. Take minutes at your committee meetings. Minutes are the record of how things get
done. Not only will they be valuable to your chairs-elect, they are an indispensable part of
our archives. You may choose to assign someone to perform this task our rotate it among
committee members (a great training opportunity!).
3. Attend all council meetings. Council is the management part of Junior League of
Nashville. Much important work is done in joint session and in council breakouts. Your
participation is an integral part of the success of our league year. If you need to miss
council, please inform your VP as soon as possible.
4. Build a community of your committee. For the vast majority of women, you are the
face of Junior League of Nashville. Yes, we have a lot of business to complete, but building
relationships is one our key responsibilities. Please consider including an icebreaker in
your first few meetings to allow members to get to know one another.
5. Don't be Joan of Arc. We are a training organization of nearly 1,600 women. Your chief
responsibility is to teach and coach, and to seek learning and support. Asking for advice,
delegating tasks and reaching out for support is an expected part of your placement. Your
board does it and we want you to as well.
6. Have fun and celebrate often! There will always be things that could have gone better,
but little to nothing would be accomplished without the women on your committee. Take
time to recognize birthdays and life events. This sets the tone for your committee.

Leadership Basics for Committee Chairs
Facilitation Tips
Take a deep breath and smile! Everyone at the meeting is your peer and wants to
participate in the discussion.
Your role is to facilitate, help the group with process, manage the agenda, push
toward completion and manage time. You are not expected to teach, train or
present.
Start and end on time.
Project energy, enthusiasm and animation.
Make eye contact, looking at all participants intermittently.
Set the stage, discuss norms - ask that:
o Everyone has the opportunity to speak to an item before someone speaks a
second time, and
o Everyone holds the comments to two minutes so that everyone has an
opportunity to participate.
Gently keep the focus on the main learning points.
Ask the group the questions, not individuals.
Listen to responses and be prepared to follow up with your next question. Do not
interrupt unless the response is overly long or off the topic.
Remain neutral.
Be sure to allow all participants a chance to speak, but remember that some people
prefer not to volunteer to speak in a group. If that happens, a specific question can
be directed to an individual, as long as she is not put on the spot.
If someone seems particularly negative, intervene by redirecting and repeat the
purpose of the process. Try acknowledging that the group has heard what the
person has said and direct the discussion to the point at hand or to the next point.
Get agreement on meaning.
Allow time for recorder to read the report sheet responses back to ensure that the
group's thoughts have been captured.
Enjoy yourself.

Icebreakers and Team Builders
ACTIVITY: Describe Yourself in Five Words
Committee members provide a quick introduction of themselves using only five words. Supplies: none required, but could be done on a name tent or poster if wanting to keep it in foreground of meeting. Debrief: How did you determine what words you used? What was your experience of summarizing yourself in five words? How as JLN leaders or members might we be called on to utilize this skill?
ACTIVITY: Three-Minute Introduction
Using the format of a TED talk, create an introduction of no more than 3 minutes to share with the group. Props are allowable, but due to time constraints, PowerPoint presentations are strongly discouraged. First and foremost, this is a training activity. Love and encouragement should be plentiful. Why? One of the most important roles we play as leaders in the league is as ambassadors in the community. This exercise will help us develop our public speaking skills as well as providing practice in crafting a message through storytelling.
ACTIVITY: Penny Team-Builder
Select a coin and then form a large circle. Go around the circle and share a significant milestone or memory that occurred during the year the coin was made. Coins made be “re-drawn” if that date does not apply. Supplies: pennies or other coins Debrief: What did we learn about our group?
Are there any trends that were noticed that need to be discussed or
shared?
20
ACTIVITY: All the Same, But Different
Divide into teams of four. You have ten minutes to create a list of ten things you have in common. Items may not relate to work or physical characteristics. Supplies: notepads and pens or worksheet Debrief: What process did you use to create your list? Was this a difficult process? Why or why not? How does this activity correlate to the work we are responsible for?
ACTIVITY: Let’s Build a Skyscraper
Break into groups of three. Your goal is to build the tallest free-standing structure possible using the provided straws and tape. Every member of the group MUST participate in some way. Each member of the group should be given a different strength:
• Person can speak, but cannot use hands • Person can use hands, but not use eyes • Person can use one hand, but not the other
Supplies: drinking straws, scotch tape, blindfolds Debrief: What was difficult about the activity? How did you accomplish the task? Did everyone participate? In the same way? What were the differences and how did
you make this work for your group? Why is this activity important? How is it reflected in our membership?
For Facilitated Activities: 1. A Tweet: Have the group define a problem or propose a solution in the form of a
tweet. This is particularly good to start generative conversations or for groups where a few people tend to speak the most.
2. The Thinking Hats: Assign participants roles when brainstorming a new idea or solution. This exercise is highly effective for pushing individuals out of their default way of thinking.
a. Blue hats: process only ideas or comments b. White hats: fact-based comments only c. Red hats: comments that capture the feelings associated with the idea d. Yellow hats: comments that reflect the benefits of an idea or solution e. Green hats: comments that reflect new ways of thinking about the idea f. Black hats: comments that critique the idea or solution. Use sparingly!
