ManagingDirector’s ViewThrough 2013 we have maintained ourrevenue performance with the waterframeworks for Anglian Water,Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent Water,United Utilities and Yorkshire Water. We are in a privileged position with thesecustomers and we should alwaysremember how important they are to thebusiness. Working with them provides uswith some fantastic work to be involved inthat is not only challenging but has varietyand gives us an ability to share ourexperiences across the frameworks.

When we are at our best we create a teamthat is not only interdependent but caresabout each other, the customer, theenvironment and the work they areundertaking. This has been exemplified on many sites but especially at bothStrongford and the Covenham to Bostonpipeline. On these sites it has been clearto me we have had great engagementfrom everyone, including suppliers andsubcontractors, supporting a happyenvironment with people enjoying theirwork.

Outside the water market we continue toenjoy success particularly with the CoalAuthority, National Grid and schemes withProcter & Gamble in London. Our workwith the Environment Agency on a nationalWater and Environmental Managementframework is starting to deliver revenuegrowth and opportunity.

As we look to the future we need to ensurewe understand the pressures that all ourcustomers face, and rise to the challengestogether with them and their otherpartners. With the great people we have Iam confident that we will meet thesechallenges by continually looking forclever, innovative, more efficient and costeffective ways of working in all areas ofour business.

To do this we will need to makeincremental improvements, ensure we arefamiliar with our systems and processesand embrace the opportunity auditsprovide to drive real improvement.

Our safety performance has againremained stable with improved reportingfrom everyone both in the office and onsite, and from our suppliers. I was verypleased to see a significant drop in thenumber of serious near misses but therewas a slight increase in reportable injuriesto our people, with three in total. This goesas a timely reminder that we cannotbecome complacent and everyone needsto maintain their commitment to workingtowards our vision of creating a workplacewith zero injuries.

Our environmental reporting saw anotherlarge increase in 2013, which was veryencouraging and demonstrates improvedawareness. We all need to face up to thechallenge of how we reduce our impacton the environment, which will be a keymeasure for all our stakeholders.

In November last year we held thecompany seminar at Doncaster. I thoughtthat it was a fantastic event with a numberof key messages for us all to think about. The seminar gave us the chance to reflecton how cost and efficiency, health andsafety, procedural compliance and the

importance of you – our people – worktogether and are critical to the aspirationsof the company and all of our futurestogether.

In 2013 we were able to deliver over 2,500training outputs, with 1,200 of theseoutputs delivered through in-housetraining. We continue our commitment todevelop our people through programmessuch as our apprenticeships and the civilengineering development scheme, whichis now in its second year.

2013 saw the company pick up a numberof awards and accolades from across the industry. The ICE, CECA, YorkshireWater, Northumbrian Water and Businessin the Community all recognised ourachievements – just reward for everyone’sefforts. Many of these successes arefeatured in the upcoming pages of theReview.

I would like to thank everyone for theirinvolvement and hard work delivering theresults we have seen. I hope you enjoy theReview and it makes you feel proud to bepart of the company.

Paul BentleyManaging Director

2013 has been another challenging year for thebusiness yet we have still managed to deliver thefinancial results we anticipated. We remaincommitted to our Health and Safety Strategy, whichcontinues to improve our performance towards ourtarget of zero injuries, and we are seeing thebenefits of our Cost and Efficiency Strategy aspeople around the company become moreengaged. These combined have put us in a strongposition as we continue with the bidding for AMP6contracts in the water industry.

2013Turnover

Financial ReviewProgress through the addition offurther long term frameworkarrangements, in particular, with theEnvironment Agency on a nationalWater and Environment Managementframework, which is already starting todeliver revenue growth andopportunity. In order to facilitate thedelivery of this work, we have formed anew joint venture, JBA Bentley, withleading specialist environmentalconsultancy Jeremy Benn Associates.

In the fourth year of our water companyAMP5 frameworks, we saw consistentactivity levels with all of our principal watercompany partners. In Yorkshire Water, wecompleted large schemes at Rivelin andBramley, and within the Severn Trent Watere5 Major Projects Programme a number oflarge schemes are nearing completion. Inthe Anglian Water region we completed a60km pipeline, and we also enjoyed astrong year with Northumbrian Water, delivering works both in the North East andthe South East, the latter via our frameworkwith Essex & Suffolk Water.

During the second half of the year, we wereawarded a contract with United Utilities toenhance security at their treatment works, setting up co-located offices in Skelmersdaleto facilitate this new work, which will be asignificant volume driver in 2014.

Outside of the water industry we continueto enjoy a small number of successfulrelationships, particularly with the CoalAuthority, National Grid and Procter &Gamble.

JN Bentley was once again in the fortunateposition of being able to be selective in itsbidding efforts as a result of enjoying arelatively full order book for the whole year.Whilst there are tentative signs ofimprovement, the construction sectorremains under some strain with insolvencylevels remaining above the long runaverage. We remain committed tosustainable relationships with our clients, suppliers and subcontractors.

I have been fortunate to visit a number ofour sites during the year and have beenconsistently impressed with the levels ofcommitment and teamwork shown by oursite teams, exemplified by their desire todo the best job that they can. I would like topersonally thank the teams at Rushmoor,Strongford, Worksop, Oswestry andBlackburn for their collective efforts.

We anticipate that the year-end accountsfor 2013 (once verified) will record aturnover of £119 million, which is a broadlysimilar level of activity to that recorded in2012. Monthly turnover in 2013 was veryconsistent, at around £10 million, and thisconsistency helped with planning, programming and labour and staffutilisation, the benefits of which will beseen in the direct margin performance inthe year. Looking forward into 2014, weexpect turnover levels to be slightly higher,at around £125 million, with the addition ofwork via the Environment Agencyframework and some recently-won largerschemes.

The year saw the commencement of theAMP6 procurement process for themajority of the UK water sector. It isparticularly pleasing to report that JNBentley has, through its subsidiary, MottMacDonald Bentley (MMB), secured furtherlong term arrangements with bothYorkshire Water and Severn Trent Water. We remain well placed for furtherframework awards with other major UKwater companies too.

The balance sheet remains strong with noreliance upon external funding. Thecompany continues to invest in theinfrastructure of its businesses; theseinvestments included additions to (andrenewals of) the plant and equipment fleet, along with a further investment incommercial vehicles, including a numberof bespoke welfare vans, which increaseour flexibility and reduce costs andenvironmental impact by reducing theneed for welfare cabins on some sites. We are currently evaluating replacementsto our core business IT systems to furtherfuture proof our delivery capability. Weexpect the delivery phase to commence inthe second half of 2014.

Our Cost & Efficiency Strategy deliveredsome significant savings in the year andcontributed to awareness throughout thecompany. It remains our core belief thatsafety and efficiency are mutual objectives, both being fundamental to the sustainablefuture of the company and the long-termjob security of our people.

10 Annual Review 2013

Yorkshire Water 2013 saw great progress made on anumber of key projects with YorkshireWater, delivered through our JVsubsidiary company Mott MacDonaldBentley (MMB). Maintaining a focus oninnovation to drive improvements insafety and efficiency, we carried outwork under four ‘streams’ – reservoirs, sewerage networks, otherinstallations, and large schemes. In July, MMB was delighted to lengthen its collaborative workingrelationship with Yorkshire Water through to 2020 when we wereawarded a five-year framework extension. The contract will runthroughout the AMP6 regulatory period, taking the partnershipbetween MMB and Yorkshire Water past the 20 year mark.

Innovation, innovation, innovationMMB has a strong history of innovating to drive best quality and value, none more sothan our commitment to the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling). 2013 hasbeen an exciting year for BIM and MMB as its use becomes ‘business as usual.’Read more about BIM on page 20.

Investing in service reservoirs

In AMP5 we have worked tirelessly tomaximise off-site construction usingstandard ‘products’ that can then bepieced together on site. We have workedclosely with our supply chain to developthe products that make constructionmore time and cost effective, and yield ahigher-quality of finish.

Off-site construction, together with theuse of BIM, helped us to build sevenpre-cast service reservoirs for YorkshireWater in 2013, the largest of which was a£3.8 million structure at Bramley, nearLeeds. Bramley used hundreds ofprefabricated standard components, including walls and internal beams.

Seeing the biggerpicture at Sutton

By maintaining a view of the ‘biggerpicture’, MMB helped to save £8 millionon an upgrade of a waste watertreatment works at Sutton.

Initial plans deemed a substantialupgrade of the existing works necessaryto improve river water quality. Wechallenged this, proposing that the sameoutcome could be achieved with a muchreduced scope of works if consentrequirements at better-performing worksupstream were changed. The Regulatorlooked at the evidence and agreed tothe changes, meaning that thesignificant savings could be achieved.

Working in scenic locations

Delivering work at Yorkshire Water’simpounding reservoir sites takes us tosome spectacular – and often remote –locations across the region, includingLeighton and Gorple UpperReservoirs where we have beenupgrading existing spillways.

On both sites we conducted thoroughtests to prove the viability of innovative,cost-effective solutions that meant theschemes could be completed quicker, without compromising on safety. Theresults are impressive too – as the photoof the masonry spillway at Leightonshows (on page 11).

3D printing has regularlymade the news in 2013and we have been usingthe technology at Suttonto provide our site teamwith a hands-on modelused in morningbriefings and planningsessions.

Rewards for sewerage

In York, our sewerage team wascontracted to replace the Clifton RisingMain, a 1.3km sewer passing throughenvironmentally-sensitive land parallel tothe River Ouse. By engaging early withlocal stakeholders and statutory bodies, impacts were minimised and ecologicalchallenges overcome. Read more onpage 29.

At Manor Vale, near the market town ofKirkbymoorside, we were tasked withconstructing a new underground stormwater storage tank and seweragepipework in narrow residential streets.

The Yorkshire and Humber branch ofCECA recognised our first-class safetyrecord on the scheme – and the 24letters of praise received – by presentingus with the Linda Grant Health andSafety Award.

MMB rewarded for Excellence

We were lucky enough to contribute towins in four of the eight categories at theYorkshire Water Excellence Awards.Focusing heavily on teams workingcollaboratively to deliver projects, MMBwas recognised for: making innovationsin health and safety; realising significantsavings on reservoir works; deliveringexcellent customer service; and forestablishing a successful engagementprogramme with the community inBradford.

MMB has surveyed hundreds ofYorkshire Water sites for ‘Working atHeight’ hazards so that solutions can beimplemented to mitigate risks. Ratherthan using standard paper-basedsurveys, our teams have completedsurveys directly onto tablet devices, preventing the need for further data entryback in the office, eliminating ‘copying’errors and significantly reducing theamount of time per survey. Photos takenby the tablet are even automaticallyembedded into the surveys!

.

Our team working near Malton made a grislydiscovery when they unearthed an ancient skeletonin a sewer trench on site. Thought to date back toRoman Britain, the bones were removed to enablethem to be examined by experts… but not beforewe had welcomed down a group of history students from the local college to learn about thefindings from the archaeologist on site.

Working closely with the client, weengaged with the community inBramley by visiting the local schooland supporting the not-for-profitBramley Baths.

Contracts Manager Steve Hutchinsondelivered a safety presentation andpupils’ entries into a health andsafety poster competition wereparticularly impressive. We attachedthe winning poster to our fencing on site.

When we secured our first contract withSevern Trent Water in 2009 our aim was todevelop a long-term relationship with theclient, as we have done previously with thelikes of Yorkshire Water. We were thereforedelighted to secure a five-year frameworkextension in late-2013, which will see MMBdeliver non-infrastructure works withSevern Trent Water throughout the AMP6period.

Our aim was always to builda successful long termrelationship with Severn Trent, and this extension recognisesthe efforts of our team.

The AMP6 challenge is anexciting one that MMB islooking forward to meeting aswe play our part in deliveringessential investment acrossthe region.

e5: Rushmoor, Strongfordand Worksop

The e5 (efficiency 5) Major ProjectsProgramme is a joint venture formedbetween four framework contractors and Severn Trent Water to deliver elevenmajor waste water non-infrastructureprojects in the region. Collaborativeworking and innovation are at the core of delivery to maximise efficiencies that benefit the client and alliancepartners alike.

MMB is delivering three of the nine e5schemes, totalling in-excess of £45million:

At Rushmoor Sewage TreatmentWorks (STW), Shropshire’s strategiccentre for sludge digestion, dewateringand cake storage, we are expanding andupgrading the existing sewage treatmentworks to cater for demand.

We are constructing a new activatedsludge plant (ASP) and replacing existingASP blowers to ensure new phosphorousconsent levels are met at StrongfordSTW, the main sewage treatment worksserving Stoke-on-Trent.

Our scheme at Worksop STW involvesthe construction of a sludge processingfacility with access roads and canal andriver crossings. You can see the workbeing carried out in the impressive photoon the cover of the Review.

12 Annual Review 2013

Severn Trent Water2013 was our busiest year yet with Severn Trent Water. Through MMB wedelivered £50 million worth of work across the Midlands and Wales on avariety of schemes, ranging from constructing new service reservoirs toupgrading sewage treatment works and assisting the client with theadoption of private drains and sewers.

Making strides with BIM >

Our team in the Midlands is using BIM inthe construction of a new servicereservoir at Oswestry. Impressive 3Dmodelling has aided construction atMinworth Sewage Treatment Workstoo, where three new CHP (combinedheat and power) units will improve theefficient generation of renewable energyfor our client. Hitting our deadlinesWe have made excellent progressconstructing a new water treatment plantto improve nitrate levels near Lilleshall, meeting a challenging deadline to ensurethe new structure was water-tight. Ourteam was commended by theConsiderate Constructors Scheme afterthey assisted archaeologists who werecarrying out a dig on site (the site ispartially located over an English Heritage-protected Roman military installation).

We were tasked by the client to deliver anitrate blending scheme at Cosford.Spread across four remote sites, MMBinstalled deep pipework, a static mixerand various valves and connections toenable high nitrate water to be blended, negating the need for a new nitrateremoval facility.

The scheme also demonstrated thebenefits of joining forces with anotherframework partner, enabling the worksto be completed by the compliancedate in true collaborative style.

Private drains andsewers: assistingour clientThe Private Drains and Sewers(PDaS) legislation will transfer theownership of all private pumpingstations that serve two or moreproperties to local water companiesin 2016, who will then be responsible fortheir maintenance and upkeep.

MMB was initially tasked with deliveringa pilot scheme, studying and deliveringcivil engineering improvements at 55sites, in areas of restricted access, on

customers’ land, in highways and inconfined spaces, dealing with electricalequipment of a poor standard.

Developing innovations, such as atablet computer app to undertakesurveys and a new telemetry panel toreplace outdated electrical controlequipment, has made delivery moreefficient, and ensured that impact onSevern Trent Water’s customers hasbeen kept to a minimum.

Feedback from customers has beenvery favourable, and contributed toMMB securing a further £3 million ofPDaS work for delivery in 2014.

14 Annual Review 2013

Anglian Water2013 brought to a close the construction of the Covenham to Boston Pipeline, a61km polyethylene pipeline running across Lincolnshire. The pipeline will supplya forecasted population in excess of 100,000, and is capable of transferring over15 million litres of water from Covenham Water Treatment Works to MiningsbyReservoir in central Lincolnshire, and then on to the town of Boston.

JBA Bentley is a joint venturebetween JN Bentley andenvironmental and waterengineering consultancy JeremyBenn Associates (JBA).

In 2013, the JBA Bentleysubsidiary was successful insecuring a place on theEnvironment Agency’s Water and Environmental Management(WEM) Framework.

This framework will last for fouryears, with the potential for afurther two year extension.

The framework covers a widerange of environmental andflood management servicesincluding environmental work, modelling, mapping, emergencyplanning, feasibility, detaileddesign and construction. To datewe have been awarded anumber of early contractorinvolvement (ECI) contracts andbeen engaged in emergencyworks following December2013's storm surge on the eastcoast of the UK.

Our first design and constructscheme with the Agency, improving culverts at three sitesin the North West, will begin onsite in 2014.

Modifications have also been completed toallow a further 11.4 million litres to betransferred through existing infrastructure.

Collaborative team working between allparties on the scheme led to a 57%reduction in embodied carbon and a 30%capital cost saving. This contributed to theproject team achieving a ‘CEEQUALInterim Award’ for design and construction, achieving an ‘Excellent’ score of 95.4%.

CEEQUAL is an independent, evidence-based sustainability scheme for civilengineering projects, recognising andcertifying high environmental and socialperformance from design through toconstruction.

The development of a scheme required toprovide resilience to Grafham WaterTreatment Works, which supplies 250,000homes, continued in 2013. The project isdue to commence on site in 2014 withmodifications and enhancements made tothe existing distribution system.

Both projects are being delivered as part ofAnglian Water’s Special Projects framework. The six partners appointed to the frameworkdeliver large, one-off capital investmentprojects in an environment that harbourscollaborative working and ideas sharing.

The site team workedexceptionally hard tocomplete the scheme in2013, reinstating thehighly productive andprofitable arable landthrough which thepipeline runs at a rate ofover 500m every day.

Northumbrian Water

Beating the clock at Knitsley

The sewage treatment works at Knitsleyrequired refurbishment to ensure it continuedto meet regulatory compliance levels. Inorder to address the operationalrequirements, we upgraded a number ofelements of the existing works, includingthree 23m diameter biological filters.

Benefitting from close collaboration with theclient and their operational staff – togetherwith good teamwork – the project wascompleted early and ahead of budget

The team was named our ‘Be Recognised’winner for October 2013. Read more onpage 23.

“Spot on” schemes

One focus for our works with NorthumbrianWater is an abandonment programmewhere we reduce the risk and liability toNWL on abandoned sites. In somecircumstances sites are decommissionedand left in a condition which elevates theirdevelopment potential, making them moreattractive sale propositions.

After being tasked with the design of theabandonment at Throckley for example,Northumbrian Water approved our plansand gave us the go ahead to deliver theworks on site.

A similar scheme at Mitford, where we had tomanage the safe removal of four tonnes ofasbestos, won a Going the Extra Mile (GEM)

Award with Northumbrian Water, in theEnvironmental Sustainability category. Theproject was described as “spot on!” by theclient’s Project Manager, Simon Cossar.

Making improvements across the region

Complementing larger schemes, such as the project at Knitsley, are a series of sub-programmes that we deliver with NorthumbrianWater. These regularly involve visiting a largenumber of sites and surveying assets beforeproviding solutions that will improve the site, making them safer or more efficient.

We work closely with Northumbrian Water’sOperatives during this type of work, andour experience has helped us streamlinethe process.

Award successes serve to reinforce and recognise the good work our teams are doing and give our people chance tocelebrate their hard work. The North East secured another impressive haul in 2013. Together with the GEM Award wonat Mitford, our Water Pumping Station Delivery Team was runner-up in the Team of the Year category, where communication was highlighted by the client as being particularly effective.

We celebrated double success in the CECA North East Awards, scooping both the Health and Safety and Environmental Company of the Year prizes. This is the fifth time in seven years JN Bentley has won Health and Safety Company of the Year, but we recognise that there is still work to be done as we drive towards our target of zero injuries.

You can read more on both health and safety and environmental stewardship later in the Review.

We first partnered with Northumbrian Water back in 2001 and have since becomefirmly established in the North East. In 2013 we delivered schemes withNorthumbrian Water on both clean and waste water sites, as well as water andsewer networks, from our offices situated in Durham – enjoying many successesalong the way.

Water and UtilitiesIn 2013, JN Bentleymoved into newpremises inSkelmersdale,Lancashire, toservice contractdelivery in the westof the country. This included asewerage schemefor United Utilitiesin Blackburn.

To improve the quality of water beingdischarged from an existing combinedsewer overflow (CSO) chamber, wesignificantly increased the capacity of thechamber by adding an additionalchannel, and replaced existing screens.Confronted with a particularly tight site, bound by residential properties, apsychiatric hospital and a river, our teamdeployed a carefully planned deliverysequence to ensure the works werecompleted without incident.

We were also successful in securing acontract with United Utilities carrying outsecurity enhancement to their treatmentworks. Here we have been designing, installing and commissioning electronicand physical security at a range of sitesacross the client’s operating region inthe north west of the UK.

In 2013 we continued to work withEssex & Suffolk Water, co-locating onthe same site in Hanningfield, nearChelmsford.

Our team, made up primarily of JNBentley people recruited from the South

East region, have worked on a variety ofconstruction and engineering schemes, including programmes to improve safetyand security on Essex & Suffolk Water’sassets; electrical upgrades andreplacements; highways reinstatement;pumping station refurbishments; andflowmeter installations

Near Colchester, we were tasked with replacing a band screen andupgrading a river intake structure to meet requirements of the EelsRegulations 2009. Working throughthe summer when river levels were their lowest, the project broughttogether a range of disciplines, including deep excavations, crane lifts, coffer dam construction andmechanical, electrical and civilengineering.

The new band screen ensures thatwhen water is extracted from theriver to serve the nearby watertreatment works, eels are safelyfiltered out and returned to thewatercourse.

Our first project with Dŵr Cymru WelshWater began in 2013 after joint venturesubsidiary MMB won a place on theirselect list of hydroelectric plantconstruction partners. A project to installa turbine on the inlet at YstradfellteWater Treatment Works in SouthWales will be complete in 2014.

Construction on site has continued withNational Grid, under their Minor CivilsFramework. A programme of worksconstructing boundary walls, fencing, security and safety works on NationalGrid property took us to sites across thecountry in 2013.

JN Bentley's regional coverage continues to diversify, as theworks being delivered for these clients exemplify.

In Blackburn, theexisting CSO roofhad to be cut into 75sections, eachweighing no morethan 10 tonnes, toallow it to beremoved safely.

JN Bentley has maintained its presence in the commercial and industrial building sector through a long-standingrelationship with ‘blue chip’ clientProcter & Gamble (P&G).

2013 was a productive year for thepartnership on P&G’s site in London – a busy 24/7 ‘live’ operational site.

First, we constructed a new 76-spacecar park and express way beforebeginning an eye-catching projectconstructing a 300m-long elevatedenclosure that has been erected 5m offthe ground to allow trucks to park below.

Once completed, two conveyors will beinstalled within the enclosure to transportpallets of finished products across thesite.

After completing foundations and pilingworks, each section of the structure wasbuilt in a secure compound, beforebeing delivered 5km and lifted into placeon site. The scheme is set for completionin early 2014.

A highways framework with CumbriaCounty Council yielded its first schemein 2013 when we replaced a coastaldefence wall with rock armour to formpermanent defence against erosion.

18 Annual Review 2013

2013 was a busy year for our teams workingwith the Coal Authority on their ‘ENVision II’framework. Both parties are reaping thebenefits of building a long-termcollaborative relationship as teams and theirknowledge move from one scheme to thenext, ensuring continuous improvement.

The Coal Authority

Covering a wide geographical area, from South Wales to Scotland, the LakeDistrict to the East Coast, JN Bentleyprovides the Coal Authority with EarlyContractor Involvement (ECI) and designand construction services centred onmine water treatment schemes andsludge drying beds at both coal andmetal mining sites.

Mine water treatment schemes

Mine water treatment schemes deal with mine water contaminated with ironochre and other mined metals. Linedsettlement lagoons, reed beds, sludgedrying beds and pre-cast concretechannels, outlets and inlets are used totreat the water before it is allowed to re-join natural watercourses.

At Saltburn and Ellington, former mines situated in Yorkshire andNorthumberland, we have utilised thesame team to deliver both projects, providing continuity for both our siteteams and our client. Following thecompletion of the works at Saltburn, thescheme was commissioned and we lookforward to returning in the Spring of 2014to double the size of the current scheme.

At Ellington, the mine water treatmentscheme constructed is similar to that atSaltburn, although it also included theconstruction of a 400m rising mainrunning from the existing mine shaft tothe new works. Now complete, this phaseof works will also be put into operation fora testing period to confirm the size of thefinal scheme to be constructed.

Preparatory works to install drainage atCraig Yr Aber saw us venture into SouthWales with The Coal Authority for the firsttime on a major scheme. The newdrainage we installed will enable a fullmine water treatment scheme to be builton site in 2014.

Non-coal works – a new path

We began working at a number of non-coal mines with the Authority in 2013 too.A pilot scheme at the incredibly scenicForce Crag in the Lake District will treatflows running into nearly becks and thedownstream Bassenthwaite Lake byreducing metal loadings in the flow.Drainage was installed in early 2013 andPhase 2, the construction of vertical flowponds and a wetland, will get underwayin 2014.

At Carrshield in Northern England, aditrepairs at Barneycraig and trialstabilisation works at West Allen yieldedpraise from the client, local villagers, andthe ‘North Pennines Area Of OutstandingBeauty Partnership’, who said that they“found the contractors friendly, polite andconsiderate and that the site was keptclean and tidy, despite difficult weatherand site conditions.”

“ “We assisted the Coal Authority atPolkemmet in Scotland when a minewater treatment scheme had to bemade operational at very short notice. The team pulled together and theircombined efforts delivered a result thatexceeded our client’s expectations.

I would like tocongratulate the projectteam…there has beensome great teamworking acrossorganisations andinternal teams. Welldone. I don’t know howyou have achieved it inthe time scale.

JN Bentley has a history of working at somevery prestigious locations, including FountainsAbbey, Blenheim Palace and Studley Royal.2013 continued this tradition when JN Bentleycompleted its second scheme at the BramhamPark Estate in West Yorkshire.

BramhamPark

The Bramham Park Estate is home to alarge Grade 1 listed landscape on theEnglish Heritage register of parks andgardens, and every year hosts thefamous Horse Trials and Leeds MusicFestival.

In 2013 we worked with architects andskilled stone masons to sympatheticallyrestore a stepped-cascade into theparterre pond, which is situated right infront of the main house.

Upon completion of the scheme, ownerNick Lane paid tribute to Mark Dolphinand his team when he commented,

“Thank you so much for all ofyour hard work over this yearon the cascade and indeed lastyear on the T-pond too. Yourteam has been an absolutepleasure to work withthroughout both of theseprojects.”

20 Annual Review 2013

BIM (Building Information Modelling)Driven by the Government and aided by developments in computing, BIM isa development in the construction industry that provides a more efficientway of designing, constructing and maintaining assets. BIM is all aboutpeople using a coordinated approach for developing, managing and sharinginformation throughout the whole lifecycle of a project, from initial conceptthrough to operation. It offers the potential for substantial efficiencies in theflow of information between different project stages and stakeholders.

We have embraced BIM and have established a BIM WorkingGroup to capture and share best practice as it is developed. As a company we have developed expertise in 3D modellingover a number of years – a key enabler of BIM. 2013 was anexciting time as we utilised the new technology, techniquesand processes on a range of schemes across our operatingregions. Here are a few highlights.

Bramley Service Reservoir

The team behind the Bramley schemeaimed to run a ‘paperless’ site from dayone, fully embracing BIM.

Tasked with constructing a new servicereservoir with a capacity of 16Ml of water,as well as demolishing two existingreservoirs in poor condition, the projecthas demonstrated how easily informationfrom the BIM model can be used on site, and has made information exchangebetween site and office much moreefficient.

Staff on site have used tablet computersand, despite not quite having shifted to a100% ‘paperless’ site yet, Bramley has stillbecome something of a flagship schemewhen it comes to embedding BIM into ourculture.

Oswestry Service Reservoir

MMB has made great progress on a tightsite at Oswestry constructing a 4Ml servicereservoir. BIM has enabled the SiteManager to explain the scheme to theOperatives using a dynamic 3D modelrather than numerous detailed drawings. It has also helped us engage key clientstakeholders, ensuring they were involvedin the design process and therefore feelownership for the finished product.

Covenham to Boston Pipeline

Using BIM on this 61km cross-countrypipeline improved safety by employingclash detection features and provided theclient with a detailed as-built model of thesystem.

The model was used for directcollaboration between not only partners but suppliers too.

Cambois Sewage TreatmentWorks Refurbishment

3D modelling has enabled operatives onsite to visualise the sequencing of theconstruction process, particularlyimportant at Cambois because the inletworks will remain in operation throughoutour works. The model has also highlightedpotential pipework clashes at the designstage and enabled the design team tomodel different temporary and permanentaccess solutions which would have beentricky to visualise in 2D given the organicshape of the inlet works structure.

Our scheme at Rivelin WaterTreatment Works, designing, constructing and commissioning sixmanganese contactor filters housedwithin a timber-clad building, utilisedBIM and was awarded the prestigiousICE Yorkshire and HumberCentenary Award in 2013.

22 Annual Review 2013

Our apprenticeship scheme hasmore than doubled its intake since firstbeing launched in 2010. All nine of ourapprentices, who were welcomed intothe company in 2012, achieved theirDiploma in Construction in 2013. Thescheme is designed 100% in-housewhich means that the apprenticeshave not only been working towardsprofessional qualifications but haveobtained additional experience andcompetencies specific to the work andculture of JN Bentley too.

To develop skills such as joinery, bricklaying and concreting, ourapprentices spend time on sitesacross our operating regions as wellas at the Training Centre in Skipton. We link closely with Craven College toensure the scheme is of a nationally-recognised standard.

We have supported more studentsthan ever before in 2013. As well asour links with pupils in primary andsecondary education, where we lookto open their eyes to the world ofengineering and the many othercareers the sector encompasses, wewelcomed our annual intake ofundergraduate placement students.

The current crop of placementstudents comprises young peoplestudying at universities across the UK.Having all opted for a ‘year in industry’following the completion of theirsecond year at university, the newemployees will spend up to fifteen months working full-time on one of ourconstruction sites or in the office, as civil engineers, mechanical and

electrical engineers, quantity surveyorsand a range of business-related roles(including communications, buying, plant control, HR, and training).

Those placement students whodemonstrate exceptional performanceduring their time with us are sponsoredthrough their final year in university andwelcomed back as permanentemployees upon graduation.

We aim to turn at least 25%of our placements intofuture graduate employees. The company is currentlysponsoring ten (of a totalof nineteen) students whoworked with JN Bentley onplacement in 2012/13, all ofwhom will hopefully returnto work for us permanentlywhen they graduate nextsummer.

Judith Jeffery, JN Bentley HR,Training, Communications & CR Manager

Two students set to return in2014, Emily Oram and HarryLinton, first joined us through theConstructionSkills InspireScholarship Scheme, anotherinitiative that JN Bentley isinvolved with.

Our own Civil EngineeringDevelopment Scheme continued toprogress in 2013. Open to allengineers on their journey tobecoming professional Site Managers, the programme lasts up to five yearsand supports employee careerdevelopment through experience andtraining. There are opportunities togain experience in various rolesaround the business so thatparticipants gain a breadth ofknowledge and understanding too.

As well as encouraging continualprofessional development, theprogramme goes hand-in-hand withthe Institution of Civil Engineers’(ICE) development objectives, enabling a professional qualificationto be gained at the same time.

Trainee engineers are assigned aMentor and Supervising Engineer, andalso benefit day-in, day-out from agreat network of people around thebusiness. Equivalent developmentcourses for Mechanical and ElectricalEngineers and Quantity Surveyors willbe launched in 2014.

Professional development isn’trestricted to the developmentschemes, however. 27 employees areworking towards a variety of furtherand higher education qualificationsin disciplines such as civil engineering, construction management, accountancy and supply chainmanagement.

Our People… JN Bentley wins a ‘Big Tick’ forits approach to workplace talentand skillsIn June we were presented with a ‘Big Tick’ award andmade it onto the national shortlist of just five in theprestigious Business in the Community (BITC) Responsible BusinessAwards, held at the Royal Albert Hall in central London.

The judges were impressed with how we engage with schools and universitiesto help maintain a stream of talented young people into the business, andcommit to investing in training our people to help address the skills gaps inthe construction sector and ensure they develop to reach their potential.

Our employee consultation forum ‘Be Heard’continued to provide us with valuable feedbackand suggestions in 2013. The forum giveselected employees the opportunity to be involvedin shaping some of the company’s decisionsand represents all employees, meeting every fewmonths for consultation.

24 Annual Review 2013

The number of serious ‘near misses’reduced to its lowest ever level, and ourReportable Injury Frequency Rate (AFR –the industry standard measure of healthand safety performance) of 0.14 isexcellent for construction. For four yearsin a row we have maintained an AFR thatranks better than London’s 2012 Olympicbuild – a project enormous in scale andheralded for its exemplary health andsafety performance.

Despite this, we know that we haven’tcracked it yet and we will not becomplacent. We suffered fourteenmedical treatment or lost time injuries, three of which were reportable to theHSE. We won’t relent on our efforts; in2014 we will work to keep the workforceengaged and get everyone activelyinvolved and taking personalresponsibility for health and safety.

Our QES Team spent a significant amountof time on site in 2013, providing supportand guidance to our teams in the field.Over 400 QES inspections wereconducted, supported by ContractsManagers. Peer-to-peer safetymonitoring, in the form of BehaviouralDiscussions, improved too: over 6,000unsafe acts were challenged and, mostreassuringly, over 8,000 positivebehaviours reinforced.

Additionally, new style E-S-O Events(Engineering Sustainable Outcomes)were attended by nearly one quarter ofthe entire workforce. These sessions areattended by a Director who fieldsemployee questions.

Our Safety and Environment SteeringGroup is tasked with developing andleading different initiatives. The groupdelivered on a number of objectives in2013 including Leadership Training for allfirst-line supervisors and improvedengagement with subcontractors andsuppliers, something evidenced throughincreased levels of reporting from oursupply chain. Environmental reportingincreased significantly too. Read more onpages 28-29.

It is always pleasing when external bodiesrecognise outstanding safetyperformance. In 2013, CECA North Eastnamed us Health and Safety Companyof the Year for the fifth time in sevenyears, which is testament to our drive tocontinually improve.

The Manor Vale Flood Relief Scheme wonthe CECA Yorkshire and HumberLinda Grant Health and Safety Awardand our innovative use of tabletscomputers and positive approach tocollaborating with the client, partners andsubcontractors was recognised byYorkshire Water when we were presentedwith the Innovation in Health andSafety Award.

Health and Safety 2013 was another exceptional year in the development of a world class health and safety culture at JN Bentley. Reporting has risen for the tenthconsecutive year and we have had more people across the businessreporting than ever before – including the greatest ever proportion from siteworkers and subcontractors.

Our CommunitySkills, Time and ExpertiseAs a civil engineering and construction company, our work takes us into new environments andcommunities every day. The business and thepeople we employ have a responsibility to contributepositively to the people and places we work with. Weare committed to maintaining good relationships withour local communities and aim to leave behind apositive legacy once works are complete.

JN Bentley refurbished a derelicthydroelectric power station in theYorkshire Dales National Park in 2011,bringing the site ‘back to life’ as a fully-operational power station. Now, asowners and operators of the site, weregularly open its doors to localschools, providing the opportunity foreducational visits. The guided schooltours allow students to learn aboutrenewable energy, the technologyinvolved in hydroelectricity, environmental considerations and thehistory of the power station and thelocal area.

School visits were held in March andMay with pupils from Gargrave School,

Dacre Braithwaite Primary School andEmbasy Primary School visiting thepower station.

We hosted public open days at the sitetoo, coinciding with the Festival ofBritish Archaeology and English

Heritage’s Heritage Open Days. Thethree days saw over 250 members ofthe public pass through the doors ofthe power station, all keen to see theinternal workings of the structure andview the technology close-up.

We support and add value to our localcommunities through the provision of ourskills, time and expertise. Weestablish partnerships with local schools, opening up opportunities forprofessional development andmentoring roles; provide all employeeswith an annual volunteering allowance;and support the efforts of employeesoutside work by matching theirfundraising efforts.

Partnershipswith SchoolsWe have linked with a variety of schoolsacross our operating regions in 2013.We have maintained our tie withengineering specialist school, SkiptonGirls’ High School, where civil engineersGemma Pickles and Gohir Rashid

mentored pupils studying for theirA-levels in Engineering. JN Bentleyvolunteers also supported the schoolduring their ‘Water Week’ – an initiativethat promotes water conservation andthe work of the WaterAid charity.

The school provided valuable supportfor our entry into the Business in theCommunity Responsible BusinessAwards, where JN Bentley made thenational shortlist for its commitment todeveloping the engineers of the future.

“The engineers our girls have workedwith have been instrumental ininspiring some of our students to gointo the field of engineering. This hasgot to be good news for engineeringand the country as a whole.”Rod Dyson,Assistant Head Teacher, SGHS

A number of our employees have beeninvolved in the Engineering EducationScheme (EES), supporting studentsstudying STEM subjects at A-level. Ourmentors work with students to developtheir skills in project management, teamworking, problem solving andcommunication.

The scheme promotes careers inengineering, and provides personaldevelopment for our staff as well assupport and ‘real life’ project experiencefor the students.

In 2013 we partnered with St Leonard’sCatholic School in Durham, and ThomasTelford and Wednesford High Schools inthe Midlands.

Many of our employees regularly providetheir skills, time and expertise to support avariety of community projects, enablingthem to ‘give a bit back’ and build positiverelationships with local stakeholders.

Volunteers from our Shifnal office – whichis co-located with client Severn TrentWater and fellow contract partnersEnterprise and AECOM Hyder – joinedforces to renovate a local youth club. TheOne Supply Chain West CommunityGroup and an army of volunteers from theoffice came together to provide thebuilding with much needed repairs,

including the installation of properwheelchair access and a fresh coat ofpaint. Many materials were donated bylocal businesses to support the project.

Employees from our North East officecontinued their partnership withNorthumbrian Water and the ‘Just anHour’ programme by working on a projectto transform an old priest house intorespite for carers. Volunteers GemmaPlaskett and Dave Ridley also joined theclient and other construction partners tohelp build natural erosion barriers at theRSPB’s St Aidan’s Nature Reserve.

The natural willow panels will help toprevent wave generated erosion of theriver banks, providing environmentalsustainability to the environment.

Employees from Head Office in Skiptongot involved at Sandylands SportsCentre – a registered charity and facilityused by many of the staff – to support amaintenance day. The team spent timecarrying out general refurbishmentactivities to give the popular centre a newlease of life.

Bentley in the Community

Bradford Moor is a particularly denselypopulated area of Bradford, comprising2,500 homes and 10,000 residents. Itsuffers regularly from flooding incidents –which is why we were called in to carry outrepairs to alleviate this risk in the future.

It was crucial our team built a goodrapport with the local people because ourworks required us to have access onto

their property. Following initial research toidentify key stakeholders, we held a drop-in session, attended neighbourhoodforums and worked with schools, community centres, mosques, councilsand local businesses. Communicationswere also issued in Urdu, including a sloton the local radio station, which helped usengage with the multi-cultural community.

The project was registered with theConsiderate Constructors Scheme(CCS), and scored an impressive 35out of 40.

The CCS monitor praised the team’sapproach to community engagement, acknowledging the “major logisticsoperations carried out well before any ofthe works began.”

28 Annual Review 2013

As engineers, our operations have a directimpact on the environment so it is important thatwe use our expertise to minimise this impact andbe respectful to our planet and its resources.

Environment

We monitor carbon emissions and procuresustainably, considering factors such assupplier locality when making purchases. We follow the waste hierarchy whendisposing of materials and divert as muchwaste as possible from landfill. We continueto communicate to employees theimportance of environmental managementand promote the importance ofenvironmental incident reporting – which willbe vital in us achieving our vision.

Key environmental issues are reviewed on aregular basis by our in-house Quality,Environment and Safety (QES) Team anddiscussed at monthly Board meetings too.

Pollution PreventionIn 2013 we doubled the number ofenvironmental incidents corrected and thenreported by employees and subcontractors– to 1,207 (from 563 in 2012). Not only hasthe number of reports improved, thebreadth, quality and accuracy of reportinghas improved too, with more reports thanever originating from Operatives on site.

This improvement demonstrates an ever-improving awareness of environmentalissues on site and around our offices, andprovides us with valuable data that we useto prevent incidents from occurring in thefuture.

JN Bentley achieved the top‘platinum’ status in the 2013Business in the Community‘Environment Index’, scoring 97%.

The score places us alongside the verytop performing companies in the UK,and marks four consecutive years ofimprovement in the survey. The Indexitself helps us to evaluate ourperformance, identify areas forimprovement, and benchmark progressboth internally and against our peers. We were also named EnvironmentalCompany of the Year 2013 by theNorth East branch of CECA.

Fuel and Energy UseTonnes of CO2e per £100,000 turnoverincreased from 5.28 in 2012 to 6.50 in 2013

(this still remains lower than levels in 2011,however).

The reason for the increase is due largely toa significant increase in the use of gas oil, which itself is dictated by work mix – gas oilpowers a lot of our machinery on site.Efforts to source the latest, most efficientplant (including a hybrid excavator) will helpto improve performance going forward.

The company car fleet remains one of the‘greenest’ in the UK, with increasingly strictminimum expectations for fuel consumption.

2013 saw the second full year of operationof the Linton Hydroelectric Station, ourowned-and-operated power station situatedin the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Thepower station returned a generation figureclose to the theoretical maximum, effectivelyoffsetting 78% of procured grid electricity in2013. Using our expertise to promote theuse of renewable energies is an effectiveway for us to offset the impacts associatedwith our activities. Our Carbon Calculations

In 2013 Managing Director Paul Bentley joined an Infrastructure Working Groupestablished by the Green Construction Board. The Working Group is focusing its efforts on carbon reduction, drawing on case studies from within its membership to demonstratethat pursuing carbon reduction generates cash savings. In November, a joint initiative to reduce carbon in infrastructure – devisedwith the aid of the Green Construction Board – was signed by JN Bentley, together with other industry leaders and the UKgovernment. Read more at www.greenconstructionboard.org.

In 2013 we completed the construction of a new fish pass nearLeeds, which allows a variety of species to bypass Rodley Weirby connecting the upper and lower reaches of the River Aire.

The fish pass has a naturalised appearance, similar to that of anupland stream, achieved through the use of precast concretemodular wall system that has a look of natural stone.

Working closely with client Yorkshire Water and a variety ofstakeholders, including Rodley Nature Reserve, we were able toenhance biodiversity on site by creating a number of ephemeral rain-fed ponds. These created a new habitat for wildlife and are in keepingwith the nature reserve’s existing wetland areas. This solution alsomeant excavated spoil didn’t have to be removed from site.

Replacing a rising main at Clifton in York posed a number ofchallenges to our team designing and constructing the works.

The site was located on environmentally-sensitive land adjacent tothe River Ouse so it was vital to minimise our impact. The sitefootprint was reduced through the use of directional drilling, andclose relationships were formed with bodies such as the Friendsof Rawcliffe Meadow, a group of local volunteers; City of YorkCouncil; the EA; and Natural England. These relationshipsenabled a number of opportunities for ecological improvements tobe realised, including the formation of Tansy beetle habitats andthe construction of additional cells within the EA flood basin toencourage the development of emerging and indigenous species.

Both schemes have since been shortlisted for a number of industry awards.

Our carbon calculation uses the methodology and conversion factors set out by the Carbon Trust. As well as consumption of gas oil on our construction sites and natural gas to heat our mainoffices, Scope 2 also measures emissions associated with the petrol and diesel used in our fleet vehicles (cars and vans) as well as any private vehicles used for business. All employees with a car(or car allowance) have a fuel card for business and private mileage. Strictly, emissions from private mileage should be excluded from our calculation and those from commuting should be includedin Scope 3, however we do not have a process in place to separate business, commuting and private miles. We have therefore chosen to include all fuel in Scope 1 of our carbon footprintcalculation. Indirect emissions in Scope 2 of the carbon calculation represent our electricity consumption.

Our vision is to achieve zero environmental incidentsand legal breaches. To achieve this, our managementof the environment is proactive and goes beyondprogrammes of mandatory compliance.

Waste Management JN Bentley’s aim is to maintain adiversion rate of waste from landfillin-excess of 90%.

We achieved this again in 2013.

The key waste measure forJN Bentley relates to skip wastebecause this is largely independentof work mix and therefore a goodindicator of our real wasteperformance. We present our datain ‘cubic metres of skip capacitypurchased’, which is more directlyrelated to the cost we pay – after all, sending part-full skips away iswasteful in itself!

When normalised against thenumber of operational sites we ranlast year, we recorded a decrease inskip waste generated whencompared with 2012, from 23.1m3

of waste, to 22.4m3.

30 Annual Review 2013

As recent five-year framework extensions with both YorkshireWater and Severn Trent Water suggest, a significant proportionof our immediate future revenue will be delivered by contracts inthe water industry. As AMP5 draws to a close, some preparatoryAMP6 (2015-2020) works with these clients will begin in 2014.We expect revenue generated through contracts withNorthumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water to improve too.

Looking Ahead

2014 will also see the conclusion of theformal AMP6 bidding process with anumber of potential clients with whomwe would like to develop successfullong term relationships, includingAnglian Water, United Utilities andDŵr Cymru Welsh Water. These bidsbuild on foundations laid in recent yearsthrough successful projects such as theCovenham to Boston pipeline, whichwas completed in 2013.

2014 sees bidding commence for thenext phase of design-and-constructworks with the Coal Authority too.

Having joined the EnvironmentAgency’s supply chain in 2013, afterwinning a place on their Water and

Environmental Management (WEM)framework, our new JV company JBABentley will establish itself by increasingits delivery with this new client.

We will maintain relationships withProcter & Gamble and National Grid, and explore new opportunities with localauthorities across our operating regionstoo.

With all of our clients, it is important thatwe understand the pressures they face.We must work with them and their otherpartners in true collaborative spirit toovercome their challenges. We will dothis using innovative, clever techniquesthat are safe, cost effective andsustainable.

Our Steering Groups will continue tooperate with delegated authority fromthe Board with the aim of driving theimprovements that ourselves and ourclients demand. Recent broadening ofSteering Group membership will widenboth capability and capacity and engagemore people around the business. EachGroup has identified five key themes forimprovement in 2014.

Existing frameworks and recentcontract extensions mean we have agood base on which to begin theyear. The conclusion of a number ofbidding processes in 2014 bringswith it the potential to secure furtheropportunities for the future too.
