Awesome Alesha

Alesha Rowe is a quiet 17-year-old student in lower sixth form at the Hampton School in St. Elizabeth. She has achieved tremendous growth in her photography skills over the last year, when she first joined the Resolution Project. In this year’s Jamaica Visual Arts Competition, hosted by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), Alesha won two gold medals out of three entries. As a result of her medals, she copped the 2nd place Youth Promise Award, earning her a trophy, digital camera and $60,000 cash. Check out Alesha’s winning photos below!

Alesha’s A"sy ‘Selfie’The first assignment for Resolution X: My Generation, the theme of the 2013/2014 competition cycle, asked students to submit ‘selfies’. A ‘selfie’ is an image of yourself taken by yourself. These are Alesha’s selfies! She did some really creative editing on the original photograph!

Title: Power cut Caption: I was at home on a quiet Sunday evening when the electricity got cut off. I decided to take some selfies in the dark.

“I am grateful, happy and excited about winning. I will definitely continue to pursue photography, as being a part of the Resolution Project has shown me what I can achieve.”

- Alesha Rowe

Naturally Naomi

Naomi Redway, formerly of Westwood High School in Trelawny, is no stranger to winning. In the Resolution Project 2012/2013 cycle, Naomi was awarded ‘Best Photo’ for “Share the Happiness” and also received the Top Photographer (Female) Award, among others. To add to her list of prizes and accolades, Naomi is now a Gold Medallist in the Jamaica Visual Arts Competition for “Little Miss Jamaica” and a merit award winner for “Share the Happiness”. There is no limit to where her photography can take her; she understands the value of practicing her craft and will continue to do so. Naomi is now attending sixth form at the Ardenne High School in Kingston and we wish her continued success as a photographer and in life.

Ashley Stephens is undoubtedly one of the strongest contributors to a team of committed photo advocates at the Glenmuir High School in Clarendon. Glenmuir won the award for Best Team at the Resolution Project Awards for 2012/2013. Over the past few years, Ashley has been consistent in her work as a photo advocate and can now add JCDC Gold Medallist to her resume. “Rhythm of the People”, her artistic image of a traditional rhumba box, was one of four gold medals received by Resolution Project participants in the competition, and it has become a highly sought-after piece. Mr. Earl Jarrett, General Manager of JNBS utilized this photo in his 2013 corporate Christmas cards. We expect that Ashley’s zeal and leadership qualities will serve her well in her future endeavours.

Creative CarlCarl Simpson, a student

of Glenmuir High School in Clarendon, is a polite and articulate young man who does not shy away from talking about his passion for photography. He continues to advance his skills through practice and has an eye for capturing iconic portraits of Jamaicans in their natural environment. Carl was awarded a silver medal in the JCDC’s Jamaica Visual Arts Competition for his work “Rasta Wares”. He will also join The Gleaner Co. Ltd. as a summer intern in 2014.

“Fast crab”

When the Savanna-la-Mar Resolution Project was implemented in Westmoreland in April 2012, teenager Shante Gooden, like the 26 others in the group, was a new student of photography. Now, she is a JCDC Silver Medallist and merit award winner for her photographs “Sunday Best” and “Fast Crab”, respectively. Shante was one of 16 Resolution Project photographers who participated in The Gleaner’s Capturing Kingston initiative in November 2012. The stop at the popular spot to eat crab and corn on Heroes Circle was well worth it! Shante now knows that photography can open doors to other great possibilities in her life.
