JOB 012351 DISTRICTS 4, 5, 8 & 9 BRIDGE PRESERVATION (2020) (S)
MAY 13, 2020
Question: The item “Portable Traffic Signal System” currently is bid as 1 lump sum since in most previous projects ARDOT retained the signal at the end of the project. This item now is being provided and retained by the contractor in the same fashion as message boards and arrow boards. Would the department consider changing this item to a “by the week” pay item as other electronic traffic control items are? Answer: The unit of pay has been revised. An addendum has been issued. Question: Bridge #05518 has a bridge modification bid item referring to drawing no. 55064. This drawing refers to modifying steel joints. This bridge does not appear to have steel joints. Should there be a modification for this bridge? Also the latex overlay quantities for this bridge appears to include the 5’ asphalt shoulder. You don’t want to overlay the asphalt shoulder with Latex. Could you please verify the overlay quantities? Answer (Modified): Yes, due to the condition of this structure the item bridge modification of existing bridge structure may be required on #05518. The Note 5 may be applicable to the joints at the bridge ends but the primary reason for the Modification of Existing Bridge Structure is to take care of unknown conditions uncovered during the rehab process. This item is only included so the Contractor will be aware that they will be responsible for verifying existing conditions found after the removal of the ACHM on the approach slab and after the hydrodemolition on the deck. Any major items of work discovered that are not covered by other bid items will be negotiated with the Contractor and a change order prepared. Please disregard the comment in Note 5 referring to Drawing No. 55064. The latex overlay quantity has been revised by addendum. Question: Should there be Trenching and Shoulder Preparation quantities for the shoulder and guardrail work for Bridge 05518? Answer:
No. The widening should be accomplished by the addition of base course and ACHM using the quantities shown at that location. Question: Bridge No. A2679 in the maintenance of traffic states that lane closures will not be required between 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. This bridge requires a back wall replacement and new approach gutters. This work will require a long term lane closure to complete. Can the maintenance of traffic be revised to allow long term lane closures for this bridge? Answer: It is anticipated that the contractor could work on the approach gutters by closing simply closing the shoulder and there is no time restriction for shoulder closures. For work on the backwall, it is only the upper portion of the backwall and not a total backwall replacement. It is anticipated that the contractor could work this portion by working during the unrestricted times and utilizing plates as necessary to open the structure back up during the restricted periods. Question: Will the Department please provide better location maps for the bridges? Answer: Please see the maps below. Question: Bridge A2679 in Pope County is to receive a Polymer Overlay, however the quantity table includes a “Modification of Existing Bridge Structure” item to modify the backwalls to same elevation as bridge deck, however the grade of the bridge deck will not be changed. Typically, this item is reserved for bridges that will receive a Latex Modified Concrete Overlay. Answer: The existing backwall elevation is lower than the bridge deck and the approach roadway. This item is intended to bring the backwall to the correct elevation. Question: Bridge 03946 in Franklin County contains both a Type A Joint Rehab and Silicone Joint Seal for the same linear footage, which item is required?
Answer: The Silicone Joint Seal Quantity has been removed by addendum. The structure will require the Type “A” Joint Rehabilitation.
Question: Bridge 02519 in Perry County contains 50 SF of Bridge Deck Repairs for Polymer Overlays but there is no Polymer Overlay on this bridge, should this item be removed?
Answer: The quantity for “Bridge Deck Repair for Polymer Overlays” has been removed from this structure by addendum. There is also a quantity included for “Bridge Deck Repair for Latex-Modified Concrete Overlays” that will be used as needed.
Question: The quantity table on sheet 46 of 47 states there is 603 LF of Type A Joint Rehabilitation to be performed at Bridge No. 05518. Can ArDOT clarify which joints are to be rehabilitated?
Answer: This quantity was based on the field measurements of the existing longitudinal and transverse joints in the existing structure.
