Company History

The idea for a mid-priced brand of hotel was conceived by Kemmons Wilson after his trip to Washington D.C. There, he was disappointed by the quality of the roadside motels of the time. The first Holiday Inn motel was opened in Memphis at 4941 Summer Avenue. Wilson then partnered with Wallace E. Johnson and they built additional motels along the roads entering into Memphis. In the year 1957, the chain was franchised as The Holiday Inn of America. In 1958, there were 50 locations of the motels across the country, which doubled in the year 1959 and went on to grow rapidly with the 1000th Holiday Inn being opened in San Antonio, Texas in the year 1968. In the year 1988, the company was purchased by UK-based Bass PLC. In the year 1994, the company made a move into the upscale hotel market with the launch of Crowne Plaza. The Holiday Inn brand of hotels now operates worldwide and has more than 3400 locations just in the United States.
