Tutor Training Sessions

Getting prepared to tutor is an important aspect of the America Reads/America Counts program.

You are required to attend a Reads or Counts training session at Normandale before you begin tutoring.

You will choose a training date during your program orientation.

The dates for the America Reads training sessions are as follows:

• Monday, September 30th, 2:00-5:00 pm

• Thursday, October 3rd, 9:00-12:00pm

The date for the America Counts Training session is:

• Wednesday, October 2nd, 2:00-5:00pm

• Tuesday, October 1st, 9:00-12:00pm

Reflections

As a part of the program you will meet for reflection sessions once a month with a group of tutors to

reflect upon your tutoring experience and continue your training. These are informal sessions led by the

Program Coordinator and student leaders; they are FUN! You must attend both reflection sessions; we give

a wide variety of dates to work with your schedule.

The dates for reflection sessions are as follows:

Reflection Session I Reflection Session II

Monday, October 28th 9:00-10:00 Monday, December 2nd 9:00-10:00

Tuesday, October 29th 11:00-12:00 Tuesday, December 3rd 11:00-12:00

Wednesday, October 30th 2:00-3:00 Wednesday, December 4th 2:00-3:00

You will commit to two reflection dates from two different sessions during the training.

Tutoring

Most tutors volunteer between 2-6 hours per week. Your hours will depend on the teacher requests as well

as on your availability. Your tutoring sessions will be worked around your schedule, however we ask that

you set aside at-least 2 one-hour openings each week for tutoring. You will not be expected to tutor during

Normandale Finals Week, Bloomington Public Schools Spring Break, or any other days during which the

Bloomington Public Schools are not in session. You WILL be expected to tutor on days when Normandale

is not in session, but the Bloomington schools are (with the exception of Normandale Winter Break and

Normandale Spring Break).

If you qualify for work-study, you can be paid for participating in America Reads and America

Counts.
