❑ Define different lighting techniques,
❑ Demonstrate the process of colouring a storyboard.
4
Introduction
5
Storyboards are created for many mediums. There are many
different views on coloring a storyboard. But it is not necessary
that every storyboard need to be colored. If we take a case of
storyboarding for TV animation, there is no need a storyboard to be
colored. If we talk about storyboard of a feature animation, it may
need to be colored. But just only to add ambience to the shots or
scenes.
There are many storyboard artists who create storyboards without
coloring it. They just create their storyboards through drawings
and apply only gray and black tones to these drawings of their
storyboards.
Introduction
6
Before diving inside the actual color part, you need to understand
how the light plays an important role in colors. As without them,
we can’t even see any color. There are different types of lighting
techniques used to influence the overall ambiance of the scenario.
Here, Photoshop is the software used for importing your sketched
output and coloring it layer by layer and providing it a gradient
look at the end.
Lighting and Color
7
It is critical to keep light sources in mind and not change them in
the middle of a scene. There are three types of light that you will
mainly need to consider:
Key light- It is the primary light, which shines directly on the
center of the scene.
It can shine directly on the subject, or for dramatic effects, it can be
shifted in one direction,

8
Fill light- It is used to reduce shadows and
also called reflective light. It is positioned in
such a way (opposite to key light) that fills
the shadow created by key light,
Fig. Fill light
Backlight- It comes from behind the subject
and is used to separate the actor from the
background. It is also called hair light, as it
often creates a brilliant shine in the actors'
hair,Fig. Back light
Colour a Storyboard
9
Let us understand how we can add colors to our storyboard. We are
taking one shot of a Storyboard in Photoshop and adding color in it.
Here we will take a storyboard as an example which has only
drawings with black color on white colored paper or background.
So, Let’s start with taking an example of a single frame storyboard
drawing which is drawn with just black colored single outlines on a
white paper.

10
Suppose we have a storyboard created on
paper. We need to scan it and bring it into
our computer.

which is going to be colored
Practical Activity 1Color a single frame of Storyboard by using Photoshop.
11
Step01
Open Photoshop; import the
storyboard drawing to Photoshop.
Once we opened a storyboard frame
in Photoshop we have to select the
background area of that storyboard
frame image to remove, Whenever we
import any image to Photoshop it
opens with a Background layer
which would be partially locked.
Fig. Partially locked Background
layer in Layer Panel

12
Step02
Double-click on that Background
layer, a window for New Layer will
pop-up.
Insert the name of your layer you
want to assign in the Name field and
press OK to unlock that partially
locked layer. (Here we named the
layer as Original)

13
Step03
Go to Menu bar > Layer > New
Adjustment Layer > Levels.
As soon as you select the Levels,
window for levels setting will pop-up
on screen.
The keyboard shortcut to select
Levels is “Ctrl+ L”.

14
To manage tonal quality of any
image, Levels has three sliders,
Black Point Slider : To manage the
Shadow tone of your image (Darker
tones)
Midtone Point Slider : To manage
the Midtones of your image (Gray
tones)
White Point Slider : To manage the
Highlight tones of your image
(Brighter tones)

Step 4.
Select Magic Wand Tool from the
Toolbar, OR
Use keyboard shortcut to select Magic
Wand Tool. The keyboard shortcut to
select Magic Wand Tool is “W”.

Click on the white part of your image, a
marquee selection will appear around the
image. Actually all the white pixels of
your image are now under selection.

16
Step 5.
Now we have to invert the current
selection in order to select the black
outlines of our drawing only.
To invert the selection, go to Select in
Menu Bar and click on Inverse.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut to
select the Inverse in order to inverse the
selection.
The keyboard shortcut is “Shift+ Ctrl+ I”. Fig. Invert the current selection

17
Now you have only your drawing lines in selection. You can easily
separate your drawing from the background now

Step.6
Create a new layer and name it as “Storyboard
01”. Now hide this “Original” layer. Go to
layer “Storyboard 01” Select the Brush Tool
from Toolbar.

Step.7
Go to Menu bar < Windows < Swatches
Select black color in swatches library.

Step8. Swipe the brush around the marquee
selection of your drawing completely. Make
sure the layer “Storyboard 01” is selected
before using brush.
It will create lines for your drawing only on a separated layer
(selected layer “Storyboard 01”). Now you have black outlines of
your drawing on a distinct layer. Now deselect the marquee
selection using keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+ D” Or go to Select <
Deselect in Menu bar.

Step.9
Go to Layer Panel and create a new layer.
Name this layer as “My color 01”.
Arrange this layer “My colors” below your drawing
outline layer “Storyboard 01”.
Fig. Create New LayerStep10.
Select the layer “My color 01”. Select a color you want to paint on
your drawing from swatches library.
Select the Brush Tool. Set its Size and Hardness from Brush
Presets. Now start painting on your drawing using brush. To get
more controlling and editing smoothness, create a new layer every
time whenever you need to paint with different color.
Practical Activity 1Color a single frame of Storyboard by using Photoshop.
21
Its better if you use different layers to
paint for different parts of your
drawing. For example, you can paint
with different colors on different
layers for different parts like hair,
face, clothes, hands etc. Name each
layer in proper manner to manage the
work.

different color

22
Step.11
If you need to change any color you
have painted already.
Select that layer which has the color
you want to change.
Go to Image < Adjustments
< Hue/Saturation
OR
Use keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+ U”Fig. Hue/ Saturation window

Step.12
Once you have completed coloring. Save
your file. Go to File> Save as

Summary
In this chapter, you have learned about relationship between
light and colour and importance of lighting, Further you have
also learned the process of colouring a storyboard.
