most updated information of job seeker members. The report aims to compare the changes

in salaries and bonuses between 2011 and 2012, and to find out the latest job-changing

situation among job seekers in Hong Kong.

Scope and Methodology (cont.)

3. Datum Point

Present basic monthly salaries (excluding any bonuses, but including commission) of surveyed job seekers as at 1 March

2012 were recorded and adjustment of basic monthly salaries compared with those in 2011 was also captured.

4. Data Collection Method

The survey was conducted by an online questionnaire. Job seekers were invited to fill in the questionnaire from 1 March to

15 March 2012.

5. Data Analysis

Surveyed job seekers were requested to provide data of their basic monthly salaries as at 1 March 2012, recent salary

adjustment, bonus, double pay, job status, intentions of changing jobs and reasons for seeking new jobs.

The data was analyzed to determine the “arithmetic average” for salary adjustment, bonus and double pay received. The

upper and lower 5% of the data were being trimmed to avoid the extreme values.

Analysis was conducted to identify any differences that might exist:

1) in job-changing situations comparing 2011 and 2012

2) in salary and bonus adjustment among 12 job functions (Percentage of monthly salary adjustment in 2012 by position will

only be shown if sufficient data is collected for calculation)

bonuses) but including commission in a particular job position. The present salary was recorded as at 1 March 2012.

Average: a mathematical average of a set of data values (basic monthly salaries, salary adjustments, and bonus received).

The upper and lower 5% of the data were being trimmed to avoid the extreme values.

Summary

Among the respondents who are employed, 66% intend to change their current jobs. For respondents who changed jobs in

the previous year, half of them (55%) still want to change their current jobs. For those who did not change jobs in the

previous year, 68% of them still intend to find new employment. Unsatisfied with the current salary and benefit is the most

important reason for them to change jobs. However, only quarter (25%) of respondents think that it is easy to find a job now.

The average pay rise among respondents in 2012 is 5.7%, and 7.2% and 5.2% for those who changed jobs and did not

change jobs in previous year respectively. While job seekers consider job-changing as a way to get a higher salary

increment, the overall expected salary adjustment after job change for those who intend to change current jobs (13%) is still

well above the actual salary adjustment. Also, the most important reason for job change is “Not satisfied with current

salary/benefit (51.3%). As a result, companies need to get updated market information to retain talent and reduce high hiring

and training cost.

received (0.9 month of basic salary).
