#uestion $% &o' to use bullet an( numbering

"se a bulleted para!raph st#le for bullets and dotpoints

$utorial

his page is about using bullets or dotpoints in your document. 3e're wor%ingthrough a sample document.

This page is about multi-level bullets, the kind where lower levels of bullets areindented. If you just need a simple bullet format, with no indenting, see How tocontrol bullets on this site.

he next piece of text we want to add to the document is this4

here are three %inds of la2y dogs4

• dogs that li%e to sleep all day

• dogs that ust don't mind foxes umping over them

• dogs that have wor%%ed hard all day and are now resting.

bviously the introductory line 56here are three %inds 768 is in 9ody ext style. 9ut

how to do the bullets: ;or the moment! ust type the text. ,on't worry about thebullets. ,on't worry about the fact that we want them indented from the left margin.#o your documentloo%s li%e the following 5remember the < sign on the screen showswhere you pressed )nterto end a paragraph8.

here are three %inds of la2y dogs4<

dogs that li%e to sleep all day<

dogs that ust don't mind foxes umping over them<

dogs that have wor%%ed hard all day and are now resting.<

=ow not  to add bullets to your text

• #ome users of 3ord will create bullets using the bullet button on the toolbar. It

wor%s! more or less. 9ut it doesn't give you much control over what's going on!it's not stable! and copying from document to document is! let's say! interesting.

>ot for grown ups.

• #ome users of 3ord will use %ormat & 'ullets and (umberin!. It wor%s! %ind

of! on uesdays! if there's a full moon! if $ollingwood beat $arlton last wee%. It

Page 9: Job Sheet 01

8/9/2019 Job Sheet 01

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/job-sheet-01 9/22

gives you more options to play with than the bullets button! but all that does iscomplicate matters. Also not for grown ups. >ot even $arlton supporters?g@.

=ow to add bullets to your list

he grown+up way to create bullets is to use a bulleted #tyle.ne easy way to dothat is to clic% on the #tyle box and select ist 9ullet. 9ut first you need to tell 3ord

to show you the ist 9ullet style in the list of styles.

#tep "4 Ma%e sure you can see the ist 9ullet style

o tell 3ord to show you the ist 9ullet style in the list of styles! do the following.

%or users of )ord *++*: n the %ormat menu! choose St#les and %ormattin!.he #tyles and ;ormattingtas% pane will pop up. ,own the bottom! in theShow box!choose 6All #tyles6.

%or users of )ord before *++*: n the %ormat menu! chooseSt#le. he #tyledialog box will pop up. In the Cate!or# box! choose 6All #tyles6.

#tep 04 Apply the ist 9ullet style

igure !: "ocate the #tyle bo$ on the ormatting toolbar. %lick the arrow and choosethe "ist &ullet style.

$lic% in the first paragraph that you want bulleted. ;rom theSt#le bo, on the toolbar5;igure "8! select ist 9ullet. hat will give you a bullet at the beginning of theparagraph.

You have two more paragraphs to format. You can select both at once! and apply theist 9ullet style to both at once. o do that! clic% anywhere in one paragraph. =old

down #hift. $lic% anywhere in the other paragraph. >ow! use the #tyle box andchoose ist 9ullet.

You'll see something li%e the following4

here are three %inds of la2y dogs4<

• dogs that li%e to sleep all day<

• dogs that ust don't mind being umped over<

• dogs that have wor%%ed hard all day and are now resting.<

Your ist 9ullet style probably has your bulleted paragraphs flush against the leftmargin. 9ut we want them indented by! say! ".*cm. 5I can't cope with the old 9ritish

Page 10: Job Sheet 01

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/job-sheet-01 10/22

Imperial measurement system! so the Americans among you will have to translateinto inches. It's very roughly an inch.8

#tep &4 Modify the ist 9ullet style

#o! we need to modify the ist 9ullet style to change the left indent. =ow to do that:;irst! ma%e sure the Insertion 1oint is in one of your ist 9ullet paragraphs.

In 3ord 0BB0! %ormat & St#les and %ormattin!. ,own the bottom of the pane onthe right! set #how to be 6All #tyles6. >ow! find ist 9ulletin the list of styles. /ight+clic% ist 9ullet and choose odif#. 5;or older versions of 3ord! %ormat & St#les.$lic% odif#.8

Step 3.1: The Modify Style dialog box

igure ': In the (odify #tyle dialog bo$, click ormat, then )umbering.

3e're now in the Modify #tyle dialog. $lic% ;ormat! then >umbering 5;igure 08.Yes4 >umbering. $ommon sense says that modifying a left indent has nothing to dowith numbering. It seems li%e the left indents should be controlled from the1aragraph settings.rue. In my view! it's a bug.

It might also seem odd to have to clic% >umbering when you want to deal withbullets. 9ut 3ord thin%s they're much the same thing. #o clic% >umbering.

Page 11: Job Sheet 01

8/9/2019 Job Sheet 01

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/job-sheet-01 11/22

Step 3.2: The Bullets and Numbering dialog box

igure *: In the &ullets and )umbering dialog bo$, one scheme may already behighlighted. +lways choose the highlighted scheme, then click %ustomie. This

picture is from ord ''. /our dialog bo$ may look different if you have an earlierversion of ord, or if you havecustomied any of the schemes.

You're now at the 9ullets and >umbering dialog box. $lic% the 9ulleted tab. You willsee C schemes for bulleting 5;igure &8.

• If one scheme is highlighted! perhaps with a blue border! choose it. >o matter

how tempting the other ones loo%! clic% the highlighted one and then clic%$ustomi2e.

• If none of the C schemes is highlighted! choose the one that loo%s most li%e

what you want to achieve! and clic% it. hen! clic%$ustomi2e. And 7 promiseyourself now that! if you have to come bac% to this dialog box! you will alwayschoose the highlighted scheme.

Step 3.3: The Customie Bulleted !ist dialog box

In this dialog box! you can have a bit of fun. ;or example! you could clic% the ;ontbutton to ma%e the bullets red. More usefully! you set the indents here.

his dialog box wins my award for inscrutable communication of the decadeD It'sabout as intuitive as umping out of a -(- without a parachute. he dialog box haschanged a bit over the years 5and in the process become even more inscrutable8 soI'll show you two versions of it.

Modifying indents for bullets in "ord 2##2

In 3ord 0BB0! line up your bullets using these rules 5;igure (84

igure 0: How to set indents for bullets in ord '' in the %ustomie &ulleted "istdialog bo$. In this e$ample, if you want1demonstrates1 to line up under 1This

 paragraph1, use 'cm, *cm, *cm.

". 9ullet 1osition E =ow far in from the left margin do you want the bullet:

0. ext 1osition+ab #pace After E =ow far in from the left margin do you wantthe text on the first line to start:

If you set this to a number less than the 9ullet 1osition setting! 3ord ignores your choicimprovises. If your number won't fit in the space you allocate 5for example! a big bullet wcm8! 3ord will push the text to the next tab stop.

&. ext 1osition+Indent at E =ow far in from the left margin do you want the texton the second and subseFuent lines to start: 5If you want the text on the secondand subseFuent lines to start directly under the text on the first line! set this toeFual the ab #pace After measure.8

In the example we're creating above! appropriate settings would be ".*cm! &cm!&cm 5or in the 9ritish Imperial measurement system! perhaps "6! 06! 068.

)ord *++* $ip: nce you have set the indents for your bullets this way! don'tchange the tabs or paragraph indents for paragraphs in your bulleted style! or youwill ruin your good wor% and have to start again.

Modifying indents for bullets in earlier $ersions of "ord

igure 2: How to set indents for bullets in ord 32, 34 and ' in the %ustomie&ulleted "ist dialog bo$. In this e$ample, the bullets arelined up against the left

margin, and the te$t is !cm from the left margin.

In 3ord G*! G- and 0BBB! the $ustomi2e 9ulleted ist dialog is easier to understand!but doesn't give you Fuite as much control.

here are two positions to set 5;igure *84

• 9ullet position H Indent at E =ow far in from the left margin do you want the

bullet:

• ext position H Indent at E =ow far in from the left margin do you want the text:

)ord /0 1 and *+++ $ip: nce you have set the indents for your bullets this way!modify the ist 9ulletstyle to remove all the tabs from the style. If you visit the$ustomi2e ist 9ullet #tyle dialog again!you'll have to remove the tabs again! too.
