Job was a very rich man. He is called the greatest of all men in the east. Inthose days wealth was counted by cattle and sheep. Job had 7000 sheep,3000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen and 500 donkeys. He had many servants to

care for these. Then he had seven sons and three daughters.

When our story begins, Jobs seven sons were grown and living in their ownhouses. The brothers and sisters were very fond of one another and took

turns inviting all the others to their homes to celebrate their birthdaystogether.

Job was not only a rich man, but a good man as well. This is far better thanbeing rich. He was perfect and upright. He loved and feared God and stayedaway from evil. He offered sacrifices as God has taught them to do, for he

knew that God was a holy God and that sin must be punished by death before

anyone could come into his presence. He not only offered sacrifices for himself but for his family as well. Job wanted

them to live for the Lord too, so he prayed for them and taught them. Job wasa good father. He was a good neighbour to, kind to the poor and needy and

    helpful to all.

We know that God is living. He hears and sees and knows all things. He has ahost of angels to do His bidding and to go on errands and journeys for Him.

In the book of Job God gives us a picture of something that happened in

heaven, something that took place while Job was bringing his sacrifices andliving a good, true life here on earth.

Satan solicits permissionto afflict his personas well, and God says, "Behold, he is inyour hand, butdon'ttouchhis life." Satan, therefore, smites him with dreadful boils, andJob, seated inashes, scrapes his skin withbroken pottery. His wife prompts him to "curse God, anddie" butJob answers, "You speak as one ofthe

foolish speaks. oreover, shall we receive goodfrom Godand shall not receive evil?"Three friends ofJob, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, come to console

him. Andthe three ofJob's friends heardall this evil that came on him, andthey came every manfrom hisplace Eliphaz the Temanite (Heb: Aliphaz the Thimanite), Bildad the Shuhite (Heb: Bildad the Shuchite),andZophar Naamathite (Heb: Zuphar the Nomathite). A fourth, Elihu the Buzite (Heb: Alieua ben Barakal

the Buzite), first begins talking inchapter 32 and plays a significant role inthe dialogue; however, his arrivalis notdescribed. The friends spend 7 days sitting onthe ground with Job, without sayinganythingto him

because they see that he is sufferingand in much pain.Job at last breaks his silence and "curses the dayhe was born".

When Job and his friends had finished arguing, the Lord came to Job in a whirlwind. "What will you learn

from your friends? "Come, stand up like a man, for now I shall question you, and you shall answer,"said the Lord. Then Job bowed his head, and was ashamed. "Lord," he said, "I am nothing. How can I

answer you? I have spoken about things I do not understand. I will put my hand on my mouth, and say

    nothing more."

God was pleased by Job's answers and knew that Job now understood the power and greatness of the

Lord. He told Job to forgive his friends for the way they had spoken, for they did not really understand

the ways of the Lord. Then the Lord gave Job twice the wealth he had before. Seven more sons were

born to him, and three daughters. Job lived to be a very old man and died happy, full of knowledgeand perfect in his understanding.
