LABORATORIES
The vital core of Department research takes place in its laboratories. Actually, the Department boasts someof the most unique set-ups in Europe – developed after moving to Bovisa Campus – featuring all the necessarystate-of-the-art equipment in different research areas.The Department has always aimed at guaranteeing the excellence of its laboratories, continuing to heavilyinvest through the subsidization of funds raised in research contracts.
[ Quality system ]■ The Quality Management System fully complies with the ISO 9001 standard for the processes regarding training
activities, higher academic education and some of the experimental activities (Italcert Certification N° 121gSGQ).
■ The laboratories comply with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard and are accredited (LAB N° 1275 D) by ACCREDIA for some of the experimental activities (www.accredia.it).
[ Calibration ]■ The Department hosts the Politecnico di Milano calibration section for acceleration, which is subject to Accredia
accreditation (calibration laboratory N° 104).

LABORATORIES
■ Automotive and Electric/Hybrid Vehicles Lab devoted to the passive and active safety of road vehicles as well as to the application of the theoretical knowledge in the field of vehicle dynamics.
■ Electric Drives Lab specialized in the research, development and testing of control systems and electrical drives for industrial and transportation applications.
■ Non-destructive Tests (NDT) Lab concerning the application and development of traditional and innovative NDTmethods applied in the design and production of materials, as well as in the maintenance and prognostics ofmechanical systems.
■ Mechatronics and Smart Structures Lab focused on mechatronic applications ranging from domotics to industrialrobotics with particular emphasis on the integrated design of smart systems for noise and vibration control.
■ Cable Dynamics Lab (equipped with a test rig span measuring 26m in length) for full characterizationof the structural dynamic behaviour of cables and suspended items.
■ Politecnico di Milano Wind Tunnel allows the experimental analysis of wind effects on scale models of civil structures, road and rail vehicles, sail boats and mechanical components in general, including wind generators and suspended cables.

LABORATORIES
■ Haptics and Virtual Prototyping focused on the development and use of virtual prototypes for testing interactionaland functional aspects of industrial products, development of software and hardware technologies for Virtual andMixed Reality applications and deformable object simulation.
■ Process Metallurgy and Materials Analysis Lab consists of a set of analytical equipment along with processing andmechanical testing systems aimed at investigating material composition and mechanical behaviour.
■ Railway Engineering Lab equipped with test benches for characterization, development and verification of railwayvehicles and track components (test bench for bogies, axles test bench and facilities for the study of wheel-railcontact and pantograph-catenary interaction).
■ Manufacturing Lab is dedicated to specific research subjects in the field of traditional and innovative manufacturing techniques (micro machining, laser application, water jet, geometrical metrology and manufacturing systems).
■ Numerical Simulation Lab for the research and development of codes for the modelling and simulation of the behaviour of mechanical systems, the study of fluid dynamic problems and the study of the fatigue strength of materials.
■ Tests of Mechanical Components Lab with loading devices and modular structuresfor static and dynamic tests on full scale components, including simple machine elements, sections of complex devices or complete machines.
■ Material Testing Lab for static and dynamic tests in the field of mechanical behaviour of materials and small components at room temperature or in controlled environment (between -100°C and 1000°C).
■ Measuring Devices and Calibration Lab is equipped with about 1000 sensors and measuring devices managing the whole procedure of transducers maintenance and calibration.
■ 3D Vision Lab for the development and the metrological characterization of 3-D measurement systems along withtheir application to the acquisition of physical objects.
■ CNC Machine Tools and Computer Aided Manufacturing Lab satisfies the need to continuously develop the mechanical components required for realising prototypes useful for testing.
■ Composite Material Parts and Models Lab for the development of rigid or aeroelastic models to be useful in manyresearch fields, including wind tunnel testing.
