Principal’s Message
Well, the leaves are falling, the days are getting shorter, and there is a chill in the air.
Winter is coming, and I want to remind everyone to dress for the weather, especially
those students riding the buses.
Once again, the year is flying by; it is only a few short weeks until the first round of
report cards (November 18) and student-led conferences (November 24 and 25). Although
report cards are a few weeks away, parents are always encouraged to log into the parent
portal of the Students Achieve software and check on the current status of their children.
Parent login information is available from the school.
I would like to invite everyone to our Remembrance Day Program being held on Tuesday,
November 10, at 11:00 a.m., in the school gym.
The Grade 9s are hosting our annual Variety Night again this year, and the money raised
at this event will go towards the purchase of a new score clock for the gym and to help the
SCC purchase a school sign. The Variety Night is on November 18, and I hope to see you
there.
I invite all of you to join us for our School Community Council Annual General Meeting
and elections on Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the gym. I want to make sure
that our SCC is well recognized for all of the hard work they have put into ensuring that
our school is truly a place where all can "Enter to Succeed.”
On a final note, the school has been using a program, new to Arborfield School and
directed by NESD, called SchoolConnects to contact parents by phone. This program is
being used to notify parents about their child’s attendance or major school events. With
that said, parents who let the school know that their child will be away should not receive
a phone call. This program should only call parents if the school has not been notified of a
student’s absence. This call is also a safety measure because it identifies missing
students. As of right now, the primary contact number is your home phone number; if you
would like the call to be made to another number, please call the school and have the
phone number changed. This system is new to Arborfield School, and we appreciate your
patience as we work out the kinks.

suggest to parents that trick-or-treating

School Community Council News
It is hard to believe, but we are already two months into the school year. Soon it will be the
holiday season again and half a year will be gone. The School Community Council is
already hard at work on this year’s activities, and they have set their goals higher in order
to take our school, along with its students and staff, to the next level.
We have just approved a new school signage project that we hope will be in place for use by
spring 2016. We also have some new and exciting activities and presentations planned for
later in the winter, which will be released in the upcoming weeks.
The SCC Annual General Meeting is set for Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the
school gymnasium. Elections will be held for all board positions that evening, as terms are
now expired for all present members. We would like to thank Mrs. Jo-Ann Edwards for her
many years of service on the SCC, and we wish her all the best. Jo-Ann was with us
through the school review period, and she was a very valuable asset to our committee. After
the graduation of both her sons, she stayed on the SCC, which showed her loyalty to the
school and this community.
With this in mind, I ask all parents of Arborfield School students, as well as Arborfield and
Zenon Park citizens, to please show your dedication to this school and consider joining our
SCC. It is time for parents to voice their opinions, bring new ideas to the table, and do their
parental duty. Why be a watcher from the side when you can be a leader from within the
core? The SCC has constantly tried to raise the bar for the quality of education and the
environment in this school, and we have done this with very little support from the parents
of our students.
In the past two years, the SCC has played an integral role in creating a memorial for one of
Arborfield School’s most beloved students. It has also assisted with the funding and the
planning of the new playground that we see in our school yard today. However, many of our
functions and meetings are poorly supported, if attended at all.
We hope that you will make it a priority to attend this year’s AGM and consider becoming a
member of the Arborfield SCC. There are both 1-year and 2-year terms to be filled.
Nominations will be accepted until noon on November 19. Anyone wishing to join one of the
six seats is welcomed to contact Mrs. Carmen Thesen at Arborfield School at 769-8784.
Please be safe this Halloween weekend, and we hope to see you at the Talent Night on
November 18 in the Arborfield Community Hall.

Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Arborfield
School. What better way to promote reading to our
students than by supporting this important literary
event!
We invite your entire family to participate by
purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books.
Your support of this vital literary event is a key part
of helping us obtain new books and resources for our
library.

with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Visit the Scholastic Book Fairs website at
www.scholastic.ca/bookfairs to read reviews of the Featured Books. You can also watch

the book fair. The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can
deposit during our Family Event. Our Family Event will be the evenings of November 24
and 25, during student-led conferences. By attending the Family Event and entering the
draw, you could win $50 in books—$25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s
classroom!

Elementary News
All about the 1/2s
What a busy two months it has been! In Math, we finished our unit on patterns and we are
nearly finished our unit on numbers. In ELA, we are busy learning how to read and write,
and I'm amazed at the progress they have all made! In Science, we are coming to the end of
our animal unit. We have done all sorts of fun activities like making habitats, creating bird
feeders, observing fish, making rocks with the characteristics of living creatures, creating
PowerPoints about animals we really like, and doing Kahoots about animal facts. In Social,
we are focusing on friendship and the community. We are going to be communicating and
receiving things from places all over Canada, and we are busy compiling what we need to
send to those places. In Arts Education, we are learning about lines and patterns in the
visual arts strand; we are learning about drama games, mime, and masks in the drama
strand; we are working on our vocals in the music strand; and we are learning the different
ways we can move our bodies to music in the dance strand. Mrs. Charlotte Curtis
What's Happening in the 3/4 Classroom:
The grade 3/4 classroom has had a great start to the school year. We have already learned
about patterns in math, light and magnets in science, and identity in health.
Currently in science, the grade 4 class is working on structures and the grade 3 class is
working on materials. We will be exploring this unit through experiments, textbook
readings, and class discussions.
In social studies, students are learning about the land, geography, maps, and communities
around the world.
We have recently started a new health unit about healthy eating and physical activity, and
in ELA, we have started writing a Halloween story. Students have also been practicing their
reading and writing skills through the Daily 5 program and weekly spelling tests.
In math, we are working with whole numbers, and we started some mini-lessons on
multiplication!

Grade 5/6 Class
September and October have been very busy in the grade 5/6 classroom. We have learned
more about each other in Health class, and we are now learning how to self-regulate and
deal with stress. We have been learning about weather conditions, weather instruments, and
classifying living organisms in Science class. In Social Studies, we have focused on the
regions, provinces, territories, and oceans of Canada. We have also been learning about the
factors that affect where people live in Canada and different Atlantic countries. At the
beginning of October, we made Thanksgiving soup for the school. The grade 6 students have
started going to the nursing home, and lately, we have been writing Remembrance Day
poems and/or essays for the Legion contest.

Arborfield’s SRC has put on numerous events throughout the month of October, and we have
more planned for the upcoming month of November. Lately, we have been up to a pep-rally,
a town cleanup, pink days to support Breast Cancer Month, worms and dirt food sale, school
pride days, and we recently introduced the Tupperware fundraiser. We would like to
apologize for the lack of communication with the Tupperware fundraiser, and we wish to
notify everyone that cheques are to be made out to NESD. Also, all order forms are due back
on November 9. Profits from the fundraiser will be used to pay for school travel, guest
speakers, and field trips. We greatly appreciate your support!
We recently have brought back the school intramural houses, so throughout the year we will
be competing at noon hours for points. The Predators, Howlers, and Alphas are our team
names representing Arborfield Wolves! On November 5, there will be a backwards day, and
students can come dressed with their clothes on backwards to enjoy the fun and amp up the
school spirit! There will be a come-eat-with-me, taco-in-a-bag food sale on November 18,
when family members are welcome to join us. The Talent Show will follow at the Arborfield
Community Hall. Please come out and join us to witness the talents of our students and
community! We will keep you updated if there are any changes to the calendar for Novem-
ber.
