Rev. Yubun Narashiba is a member of the Hawaii Ehime Kenjinkai, a social ser-vice group. Recently, the Hawaii Ehime Kenjinkai used Ikoi Hall to have a cooking demonstration by Chef Yuji Ogai, also a member of Hawaii Ehime Kenjinkai. Chef Ogai prepared three dishes of the Ehime Prefec-ture of Japan, namely Uwajima Local Cuisine. Uwajima is the town where the Ehime Maru boat came from and whose students died in waters outside of Oahu.
1) Satsuma-jiru (soup made with Barley miso from Ehime Prefecture and was served with oat rice. No Satsuma-imo (sweet potato) was used).
2) Fukumen (Secret Mask - because the striped Konnyaku is covered with 4 differ-ent colored ingredients. The texture of the Konnyaku is mixed with other ingredients re-
minds you of the taste of old hometown). Left photo, Chef is finely cutting Konnyaku. Right photo is the finished Fuku-men. At far right is another version of the Fukumen. Then the Fukumen is mixed together and the
dark colored strips shown are dark colored Konnyaku.
3) Seasoned Okara (Chef learned this dish while working at a famous Waikiki restau-rant. Among the chefs, this dish is also called “Uno Hana” or “Deutzia flower”. At left Chef is mixing the Okara and photo at right is the finished product next to the mixed
Fukumen.
Hopefully, Chef Ogai will come up with other demonstrations!
Repair of Amida Buddha Statue in Betsuin Altar
When you visit the Betsuin, you will notice that the Amida Buddha statue is not there. It was shipped to Japan for repair. Special craftsmen arrived from Japan to take it to Japan for repair. It will take about three to four months before it returns.

On Sunday, February 21, 2016, four students from Shukutoku University Pan-el Theater Group performed their panel story singing for everyone who attended the Sunday Service. Also performing were the creator of panel theater, Rev. Ryojun Kouda of Tokyo and Professor Tsukasa Takahashi of Kyoto Bukkyo University.
The students were: Risa Katsuki, Yuki Takano, Yumi Kato and Yudai Takahashi. While on Oahu and on the neighbor islands, Den Den Mushi visit care homes. Everyone enjoyed their performance which also included some audience participation.
Rev. Ryojun Kouda is the creator of panel theater. He is pictured at the left singing BINGO. He performs with such happiness and enjoyment of what he is do-ing that you can see why Den Den Mushi also follows that enthusiasm!
Professor Tsukasa Takahashi also per-formed in a different style with authentic Japanese music. He is pictured in the white shirt with a lei.
The students of Den Den Mushi are so talented! This group sang, played a guitar and pianica (a large harmonica with a key-board).
Thank You Note from Den Den Mushi
Dear Jodo Mission of Hawaii:
Thank you for letting us perform our Panel Thea-ter, and sorry for our poor English.
We are very impressed by your warn hospitality. We had a very good time and experience.
We hope that we will see you again. Thank you very much!

Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai
On February 28, 2016, Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai had their General Member-ship meeting and New Year’s Party. Bishop Gensho Hara thanked the ladies for their dedication to the temple and at the same time also mentioned that although food prepar-ing is important, which the Fujinkai ladies are known for, we must also attend Sunday Services. Kyodan President Jon Riki Karamatsu also thanked the ladies for their dedi-cation and remarked how the women in our lives are the strengthens of our families. After the ceremonial portion and welcome addresses, the ladies moved to Ikoi Hall for a pot luck New Year’s party with such a variety of foods, deserts, etc. Then came the BINGO games. Keiro women and supporters (all over 80 years old; oldest 97) were honored with a container of sekihan. These Keiro women have worked so hard for all these many years to our temple! With all their aches and pains, they still come to the
temple to help in whatever way they can. Arigato Gozaimasu!
Oahu Youth Retreat
Sunday School stu-dents from Halei-wa Jodo Mission and Jodo Mission of Hawaii attended service at Betsuin before riding a bus to Sea Life Park. They spent a won-derful day learning about sea animals. This would be a wonderful photo for the HBC Photo Contest!

What is “Perpetual Memorial Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of death occurs for a person listed on this record, the ministers pray for that individual during the morn-ing service. The prayers will continue each year for as long as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put your own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is difficult to have memorial services. We also wel-come you to attend the morning service at 9:30am.
How to apply
Stop by the office, and fill out the application form. Each name costs $200. After the application is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.
