School Safety

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. During the year, our school has fire, tornado, and intruder drills. The drills ensure our students and staff are prepared for potential emergencies. Watch for future newsletter updates that give you information on our drills, so you can continue the safety conversa-tions with your child(ren) at home.

Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. The system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered.

Requests for Homework

You are encouraged to request homework for your

student when they are absent for two or more days. This

request may be made on the answering machine or to

the office staff at 274-4030. Homework requests must be

made prior to 9:00 a.m. on the second day to assure

enough time for teachers to prepare the assignments.

Work may be picked up in the main office after 2:45 p.m.

and before 3:45 p.m. on the day that you request it.

School Meal Requirements

Just a reminder on how students are charged for hot lunch items in the Sioux City School System. Due to new nutritional guidelines, students MUST take a vegetable or fruit as part of their main meal. If they do not take a fruit or vegetable they are not charged for a school lunch but rather charged for each food item individually. This costs more than buying a full school lunch. Please encourage your student to take a full meal when going through the line. It helps your student nutritionally, and also helps keep cost down for you as a parent.

Increasing the amount of fruits

Reducing the sodium in the meals over the next 10 years

Setting the calorie limits for the first time

Increasing the whole grains

Limiting the amount of meat/meat alternatives and grains

Please visit the district Website at www.siouxcityschools.org for addition information.

Breakfast and Lunch Prices

this year are:

Breakfast Regular price $1.90

Reduced price $ .30

Lunch Regular price $3.00

Reduced price $ .40

Traffic Concerns After School Pick-Up

This year, we are asking students to dismiss out certain doors at the end of the day.

6th Grade is dismissed out of the main South front doors.

7th Grade is dismissed out of the lower West doors.

8th Grade is dismissed out the upper main West doors.

This may make a difference on where you plan to pick your child up in the afternoons. It is important that our traffic flow goes well. You must enter the main parking lot from Lorraine Ave. and exit the parking lot onto South Olive.

Please do not try to exit the lot from the Lorraine Entrance. It is also very important that you not drop off or park along S. Olive near the school. These spots are marked as NO PARKING. Please abide by this. We need to have the streets clear to get the busses and cars moving smoothly.

Once students have been dismissed at the end of the day, it is our expectation that students be picked up no later than 2:00 p.m. on Monday’s and 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday- Thursday’s. There is no supervision past that time. We do not want any student in an unsafe situation.

Conferences will be held Monday, Sept. 24th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and Tuesday Sept. 25th from 3:05 pm to 6:00 pm. Please watch for conference forms to be sent home with your student. During conferences, PAC will be hosting a book fair in the front hallway of the school. Also, there will be no school for secondary schools on Monday, Sept. 24th and no school district wide Friday, Sept. 28th.

September Awareness Month

The Sioux City Community School District recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. So, we’ve joined a nationwide effort to celebrate Attendance Awareness Month in September. Nationwide, far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 18 days – for any reason, excused or unexcused. Research shows that’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance.

During Attendance Awareness Month, we are asking you to help us reduce absenteeism locally by taking these steps:

• Build a habit and a culture of regular attendance.

• If there are challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school, let us know so we can help.

We are very excited to invite you to an opportunity to learn more about International Baccalaureate, or IB. This educational program aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. An IB education focuses on learners, develops effective approaches to teaching and learning, works within global contexts, and explores significant content. As we continue to have conversations about IB, please check out https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/digital-tookit/brochures/corporate-brochure-en.pdf for more information. In the meantime, feel free to email [email protected] with your questions, concerns, or comments. Please plan to attend one of the following nights to ask questions and learn more about IB!

$CHOOL BUCK$

PROGRAM RULES 2018-2019

All receipts must be from the Sioux City or South Sioux City Hy-Vee’s or the Hy-Vee Mainstreet Store. Receipts must be dated August 1, 2018 – April 28, 2019. No fuel, gas, postal, money order, Western Union, lottery, Quest, Mid American, bottle refunds or gift card receipts will be accepted. If any of these receipts are found in any of the bundles the entire bundle amount might not be counted and will not go towards your school total. If you have any questions regarding the receipts please contact Scott Wieck at 712.277.8120.

Shoppers will give their receipts to a school who is participating in the Sioux City & South Sioux City Hy-Vee SCHOOL BUCKS Program. For every $100 worth of receipts turned in, the school will receive $1.

The school must identify a contact person to run the program – need name, day time phone number and an email address.

Schools will be getting checks during the school year in $500 increments and the remaining at the end of the program – date to be determined. Also, we will need a person to pick up the $500 checks during the day. If this person is different from the contact person we will need the name, day time phone number and an email address.

Each school is responsible to add up the total of all receipts turned in and put them in bundles of $5,000 or less and mark each bundle with a dollar amount (total does include tax). Also, each school should be using the school bucks tracking form throughout the program, and one should be turned in with each drop. Tracking forms will be emailed out to you, or picked up at Hamilton Hy-Vee Customer Service.

Hy-Vee would like to see receipts turned in on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, if your school re-ceived less than $500 last year you can turn them in every other month. We reserve the right to limit a dollar amount given to an individual school per month. Program ends April 28th and receipts need to be turned in by 5:30 pm May 12th or sooner if the pay out total reaches $100,000 so please get the receipts turned in on a regular basis so you don’t lose out. Notification will be emailed out once we reach the $80 to $85,000 mark. Final checks will be ordered and late receipts will not be accepted.

September 2018 Counselor Corner

KEYS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT

You can set your middle school child up for success this school year with some basic pointers. Suggest that they

try to follow this checklist and you will help them get off to a great start!

I need to attend school every day unless I’m sick

I get 8-10 hours of sleep each night

I eat a healthy breakfast in the morning

I arrive to school on time

I pay attention in class

I write down my assignments for each subject in my assignment book

I start my projects when I get them

I complete by homework on time

I read for pleasure each day

Lastly, accompanying every successful student is an involved parent. We suggest you monitor your child’s pro-

gress on Infinite Campus regularly, contact teachers and counselors with concerns and attend parent teacher con-

ferences in September and February.

Medication at School

The district’s medication policy can also be viewed on the district website at www.siouxcityschools.org When possible, it is suggested that medication be given at home. If it is necessary for your child to take medication at school, the following important points need to be remembered.

1. Written permission from the parent/guardian is required in order for any medication to be given at school. This includes all over-the-counter medications such as cough drops and pain relievers.

2. Medication must be in the original labeled container, i.e. prescription bottle or manufacturer’s container.

No medication will be accepted that is sent to school in an envelope or baggy.

3. Medication that requires refrigeration cannot be given at school.

4. Medication requiring written permission from both the parent/guardian and the physician are:

a. Medications that will be given every day all school year.

b. Medications that will be given longer than two weeks.

c. Medications that will be kept at school all year.

5. You are encouraged to administer medication prescribed three times a day at home. The first dose may be given before school, second dose after school and the third dose at bedtime. Medication permission forms are available in the school office. The parent/guardian is responsible to take the medication form to the doctor. The complete medication form must be returned to school within two weeks from the time the medication was brought to school.

7th Grade Immunization Requirements

Iowa Immunization law requires that all students entering 7th grade have both a Meningococcal vaccination and a Tdap

(Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) vaccination before school starts in the fall.

The Tdap requirement has been in place since the 2013/14 school year and requires a booster dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and acellular Pertussis containing vaccine for students entering 7th grade, regardless of the interval since the last Tetanus/Diphtheria containing vaccine. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that make it hard to breathe.

The meningococcal vaccine has been required since the start of the 2017/18 school year. Meningococcal disease is a life threat-ening illness that is caused by bacteria that infects the brain, blood, and spinal cord. It easily spreads in crowded settings. The vaccine is required prior to both the 7th and 12th.

What does this mean for you? You will need to call your physician’s office to make an appointment for these vaccines. You will need to check your home records or call your physician’s office to see what your student’s status is. If you do not have insurance, you can contact the Siouxland District Health Department at 279-6119. Please send a copy of your student’s updated immunization record to the school nurse prior to the first day of school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
