2017 NFCA COACHES POLL

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (April 17, 2017) - In their final week of the regular season, Central Missouri Jennies Softball started with a split of nonconference opponent William Jewell. The Jens won game one on a walk-off, 4-3, but were on the short side of a pitcher’s duel in the nightcap, 1-0. UCM remains just a game under .500 at 24-25 with four games left in the regular season.

Game One: Central Missouri 4, William Jewell 3The Jennies scored first and last in the opening game of their doubleheader with the Cardinals. Alex Leonhart started the scoring plating Courtni Smith with a double over the left fielder’s head. Two batters later, Allie Dishinger made it 2-0 scoring Leonhart with a single up the middle.

The lead didn’t even last an inning though as the Cardinals quickly tied and took the lead. The first two batters of the inning reached on an error and came in to score the tying runs. The first five batters all reached base and UCM starter Alexa Bradley did a good job of limiting the damage. An RBI single gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead, but Bradley navigated around a bases-loaded jam to stop any further damage.

An inning later in the fourth, Dishinger came through again, tying the game with a two-out RBI double scoring birthday girl Carlie Rose who led off with a single.

The score remained knotted at three until the final inning. It took just two batters for the Jennies to walk-off with a win. Makayla Schoonover again played catalyst, gettign things started with a bunt single and steal of second on the very next pitch. Hailey Crabtree’s hot shot to second couldn’t be handed cleanly and Schoonover raced around to score the game-winning run.

Bradley got the win tossing all seven innings. She gave up three runs (one earned) with two walks and two strikeouts on four hits. Dishinger and Schoonover each finished with two hits. Schoonover scored a run and stole two bases, Dishinger drove home a pair.

Sarah Lewis started for the Cardinals. She pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Sydne Brashear knocked in two runs and Madi Giles had a double and a run.

Game Two: William Jewell 1, Central Missouri 0William Jewell made their first inning run hold up, in another pitcher’s duel. It’s the Jens second 1-0 loss in their last six games. Giles led off the game getting hit by a pitch. One batter later, she came around to score on a triple off the bat of Brooke Bernard.

After that, Jennies pitcher Katie Giacone allowed just four more hits and no runs, taking the hard-luck loss. She struke out four in seven innings of work.

Cardinal starter Anna Biondo pitched all seven innings, allowing no runs on six hits with a walk and six strike-outs.

The Jens best chance came in their final turn at bat. Smith led off the inning with a single to right. A bunt moved her up to second and an infield single and four-pitch walk loaded the bases with two outs. Biondo ended the game with her sixth strikeout as pinch hitter Alexis Koop swung through a letter-high fastball.

Smith and Aubrey Daniel each picked up two of the Jens’ six hits. Smith also stole her eighth base of the season.

Central Missouri will stay at home for the final two doubleheaders of the regular season. The Jens penultimate DH will come against Lincoln, scheduled for Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m.

Anderson vs. the Blue Tigers/Lions• Anderson doesn’t have the long history with Lincoln and Lindenwood that she does with some other MIAA competition. In 13 games against the Blue Tigers she holds an 11-2 record, but is just 4-6 all-time against Lindenwood.

Jennies at Home• Central Missouri has played very well at home this season. They are right in the middle of a 10-game homestand which they have started out 4-2. For the season, UCM is 9-3 at Jennies Field in Warrensburg.

Milestones• Senior Lauren Mabe set the new all-time hit record at UCM with her double against Central Oklahoma, and now she continues to add to the record as she has 232. She’ll need some help if she wants to crack the MIAA all-time top-10 which is 22 hits away. • Mabe also tied her coach as the Jens all-time walks leader. Both Mabe and Susan Anderson have 64 career walks. Mabe is also currently third all-time in doubles with 48, just one behind second place and six behind Jakki Prater’s all-time record of 54. • Mabe isn’t the only Jennie moving up the record books. Makayla Schoonover has moved into fourth-place all-time in stolen bases with 68 and is eight away from third place She is 26-27 this season, second in the MIAA. • Alex Leonhart is looking to crack the UCM top-10 in RBI. She has 89 career and needs just six more for 10th all-time. • In the circle, Jennies pitching has been locking down saves this season. They have nine as a team, a new single-season team record. Alexa Bradley has five which is tied for the most in team history while Katie Giacone has four.

Who’s Hot?• The outfield. Courtni Smith, Makayla Schoonover and Aubrey Daniel have been all over the bases on this homestand. Daniel, filling-in in right field hit her first two career home runs Saturday against Emporia State. Smith smacked two home runs in game two against the Lady Hornets and hit .529 last week with seven RBI and six runs. Schoonover continued to do her thing at the top of the lineup collecting six hits, six runs and six stolen bases. • Ever since Mabe record hit number 223, she has been on fire. Mabe hit .389 last weeks with seven hits in 18 at bats including three doubles and drove in six runs. • The Jens got six complete games from Bradley and Giacone in their three doubleheaders as the duo combined for a 1.75 ERA, giving up 10 earned runs in 40 innings pitched. Bradley allowed just three earned runs and had a 1.11 ERA while Giacone struck out 17 in 21 innings.

Saving the Best for Last• Like Jennies Basketball during the winter, Jennies Softball has been getting it done late in games. They needed to Monday, coming away with a walk-off win against William Jewell, scoring a run in the seventh.

In the MIAA• Pitcher’s Katie Giacone and Alexa Bradley sit just outside the MIAA top-10 in ERA. Bradley is 11th with a 2.86 ERA and Giacone is 14th at 2.94. • Giacone is eighth in the league in opponent batting average, limiting the opposition to just a .238 average. • Giacone is also ninth in strikeouts with 92 and her 28 backwards K’s, are seventh while Bradley has 26 punchouts looking, ninth in the league. • With 151.2 innings, Bradley is up to seventh in the MIAA.• Bradley is the MIAA leader with five saves while Giacone is tied for second with four. • After her four-hit game against MWSU, Makayla Schoonover is back in the MIAA top-10 in batting average, eighth at .384.• Schoonover is also second in stolen bases with 26, three behind the league leader.• Lauryn Deer is tied for fourth in triples with four. Only three in the MIAA have more. Mabe’s 12 doubles have her tied for eighth. • Courtni Smith has been moving runners along, her nine sacrifice bunts are seventh.

Two-Out Production• Central Missouri seemed to have a more focused approach with two outs in an inning. The Jennies collected 14 of their 27 RBI last weekend with two outs. Courtni Smith led the way with four while Lauren Mabe had three and Hailey Crabtree, Aubrey Daniel and Allie Dishinger all had two.• That went for the pitcher’s as well. Though they were stellar all game long, holding opponents to a .211 batting average, with two outs, Bradley and Giacone lowered that number even further to .170, while Bradley posted .048 opponent batting average with two outs (1-21). Only four of 14 opponent RBI came with two outs.
