The Karelian municipality of Joensuu stretches clear to the border; our common border with Russia is about 30 kilometers long. In addition to its eastern culture the image of the city is colored by the students of the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Applied Sciences and other educational institutions as well as high-quality cultural and leisure-time services.
The municipality comprises the central city as well as a number of active villages. The municipalities of Kiihtelysvaara and Tuupovaara were merged with the city of Joensuu on 1.1.2005, Eno and Pyhäselkä on 1.1.2009. This means that you can vacation according to the pulse of the city or in an idyllic rural setting.

CarelicumIn January 2011 Carelicum re-opened its doors after a substantial renovation. Stop in and have a look! At street level you’ll find Karelia Expert Tourist Service and a ticket reservation and sales desk; tickets for events, the theater and concerts are available there. The selection of items in the Museum Shop has been renewed. The restaurant serves local dishes, the ingredients of which come from nearby and organic farms. Carelicum is the site of various exhibitions, cultural events, music performances and poetry readings.
North Karelian MuseumThe North Karelian Museum is located in the Carelicum Cultural and Tourist information Center in the center of Joensuu. The museum chronicles and introduces the culture of the North Karelia region. The museum’s collections also include material from Ladoga Karelia. As a result the permanent exhibition “On the Road in Karelia” is limited not only to North Karelia, but presents
the history of Karelia in a much broader sense. You can start your journey into the history of Karelia, for instance, from the end of the ice age and the arrival of the first humans, and continue on to consider the hard road of the evacuees in the Second World War. In between you can discover peasant life, rune singing, wars during the period of Swedish rule, industrialization and manor house life, among other things.
The exhibition includes not only genuine artefacts, maps, scale models and photographs, but also lots of visual and audible material in virtual form. For instance, the slide show of Joensuu in the 1960s includes nostalgic photographs and cine films from the growing and developing city.
The temporary exhibitions of 2013:• 14.2.–21.4.2013 Puzzles from the collection of Matti Linkola• 16.5.–22.9. Lennossa – In Flight, birds in Carelicum • 10.10.–12.1.2014 Childhood and the Rights of the Child

Hietajärvi and Peltokoski in Huhtilampi
PyhäselkäThe Kalliojärvi route passes along the floor of a stone gorge surrounding Lake Kalliojärvi. Its length is 4 km and the trail is mainly a forest path through a varying landscape. The route traverses an area of steep rocks. Along the route is a lean-to and stacked firewood is available for use.
The Elovaara nature trail is located in the immediate vicinity of Hammaslahti, about 2 km from the municipal centre towards Rääkkylä. The Elovaara eskers are part of a large formation of ridges and form an impressive range of kettle holes and ridges. The ridge area is cut by 2.5 and 1.5 km-long nature trails. The routes are very suitable for educational purposes. One of the area’s campsites is suitable for the handicapped.
Rauanvaara in Pyhäselkä is a versatile nature attraction, with its rugged hillsides and lush vegetation. A 1,2 km long nature trail runs along the hill, offering impressive views over the surrounding waterways.
Updated information about other recreational facilities in Pyhäselkä can be found at www.jns.fi/liikuntatoimi.
Tuupovaara
HIKING
Shepherd’s Trail (Paimenpojan polku)The Shepherd’s Trail connecting the villages of Tuupovaara and Hoilola expresses North Karelian nature. Rock-hard ridges, natural forests and flowing streams characterize the trail’s landscape. Splendid rapids can be found at Vekarus. Watch the birds playing in the river from the Höttönen bird-watching tower. The Koskenniska Mill and Inn Museum displays the Karelian cultural tradition and the Pörtsämö Orthodox Wilderness Burial Ground is found at the shore of Lake Öllölä. The 35-km trail is easy to traverse. It passes along forest paths and forest roads. Causeways have been built across wetlands and bridges over rivers and streams. The shepherd’s logo is the trail-marker and is found on poles and signposts. Trees are marked with orange dots. Directions and distances are marked on signposts. Guideposts along the trail have maps showing the exact location and there are also well-kept campsites.
Vekarus Outdoor Recreation Area The Vekarus Outdoor Recreation Area is one of Joensuu’s finest natural sights. It includes three rapids, the most powerful being Vekaruskoski. Two bridges cross the rapids. Vekarus is an outstanding location for fishermen. The area is bounded by a two-km long path and has two lean-tos and an accessible Lappish Ahveninen beach in Eno. Koskenniska Lappish Hut Area The Koskenniska Lappish Hut Area is situated at a beautiful spot on the shore of Lake Alajärvi and is suitable for a variety of purposes: tenting, a rest spot, swimming, cooking, overnighting and fishing. The log grill shed is spacious and in the yard there is also a campfire, children’s playground, picnic tables, changing rooms, firewood storage and an accessible outhouse. The roads are passable by car when there is no snow. The area has been made accessible and wheelchair users have been considered. The outhouse and grill shed are wheelchair-friendly and the broad causeway makes access to the beach easy. CANOEING
Jänisjoki Canoeing RouteAn 85 km long canoeing route. Its beginning is divided into three parts: the Kovero Fork, or Jänisjoki River, is the calmest and is suited for group canoeing. Kuuttijoki River is suitable for canoeing in early summer, when the water level is high. Kotajoki River is the favourite of rapids canoeists, especially in spring and early summer, when it’s fast and demanding.
FISHING
Jänisjoki Fishing AreaThe Jänisjoki area is a small watercourse including several river routes with plenty of fish. The rapids and lakes have been stocked with trout, grayling and whitefish. Trout and grayling spawn naturally in some areas. The Jänisjoki reel fishing licence covers the areas of several fishing associations.
