Im handschriftlichen Titel von Präludium, Fuge und Allegro, BWV 998 findet sich zwar nur das Prä-ludium, aber Fuge und Allegro folgen in der Partitur.In the handwritten title from Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998 there is just the Prelude mentioned,

but Fugue and Allegro are following in the score.

Am Ende vom Allegro wechselt Bach quasi zur Stenographie und schreibt unten auf der vierten Seitein Kürzeln (deutsche Orgeltabulatur) . . .At the end of the Allegro Bach changes his writing at the bottom of the fourth page to a kind of

stenography (German organ tablature) . . .

. . . und weil der Platz nicht ausreicht, schreibt er am Ende der ersten Seite unten weiter, bis er dasStück mit »Fin« beendet. Es ist zu sehen, Bach war sparsam! Das muss sicherlich auch derjenige sein,der vielleicht einmal vorhat die Partitur zu erwerben, denn bei der Veräußerung 2016 musste hierfür dieSumme von ca. 2,5 Mio. Pfund (www.christies.com) auf den Tisch gelegt werden.. . . and, because there is not enough space, it goes on at the end of the first page, finished by “Fin”. It

can be seen, Bach was thrifty! And surely this is exactly what someone has to be if he wants to acquirethe score in the future. Because at the sell-off 2016 the amount of ca. £2.5 million (www.christies.com)was necessary to acquire the score.

Präludium, Fuge und Allegro, BWV 998Von BWV 998 existiert ein Autograph.1,2 Es gibtallerdings einige Besonderheiten. Zunächst einmalkommt im handschriftlich von Bach verwendetenTitel »Prelude pour la Luth . ò Cémbal« nur dasPräludium vor. Fuge und Allegro folgen allerdingsdann in der Partitur.Dann wechselt Bach vom zunächst verwendeten

Doppelsystem zur Kurzschreibweise (deutsche Or-geltabulatur) am Ende des Allegro auf Seite 4 undschreibt dann am unteren Teil der Seite 1 weiter,bis die Partitur mit »Fin« beendet wird.Mitunter wird gemutmaßt, dass dies vielleicht

darauf hinweisen könnte, dass Bach dieses Werkwohl doch eher für ein Tasteninstrument vorgese-hen hatte als für die Laute. Diese Vermutung istallerdings sehr unglaubwürdig. Viel eher ist reinerPlatzmangel als Argument anzusehen. Bach war,von seinem enormen kompositorischen Wirken malganz abgesehen, auch noch ein sehr fleißiger Schrei-ber. Dass er als solcher sehr sparsam mit dem vor-handenen Papier umging, liegt nahe.BWV 998 lässt sich wohl grob als Spätwerk ein-

ordnen. Jedenfalls nach 1734, vielleicht vom Anfangbis zur Mitte der 1740er Jahre.1 (»Zwischen 1740und 1745 in Leipzig entstanden.«)3Zu den Werken, die man stillschweigend oder auf-

grund offensichtlich beeindruckender Indizien alsBachsche Werke für die Laute bezeichnen kann,zählen BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 999, 1000, 1006a.4

Francisco Tárrega (1852 – 1909) war der ers-te oder zumindest einer der ersten Gitarristen, dieTranskriptionen von Bachs Werken erstellt und öf-fentlich zugänglich gemacht haben. Allerdings nichtvon den Werken für Laute.Agustín Barrios (1885 – 1944) war weltweit einer

der allerersten Gitarristen, die Schallplattenaufnah-men erstellten. Eine Bach-Einspielung ist erhaltengeblieben.Hans Dagobert Bruger (1894 – 1932) publizier-

te zu Beginn des 20. Jh. eine Edition mit siebenBachschen Kompositionen für Laute, genauer fürdie Lautengitarre.5 Andrés Segovia (1893 – 1987)hatte hiervon Kenntnis erlangt und fragte Bruger,ob er sein Werk als Basis für eigene Transkriptionenverwenden dürfe.6Nach oder neben Tárrega, Barrios und Sego-

via gab es weitere Gitarristen, die Editionen undAudio-Aufzeichnungen von Bachschen Kompositio-nen gemacht haben. Warum? Weil Bachs Werkezu den hochwertigsten Quellmaterialien für Gitarre-Transkriptionen zumindest aus seiner Zeit zählen.

Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998From BWV 998 an autograph exists.1,2 But there

are some peculiarities. At first, in Bach’s handwrit-ten title “Prelude pour la Luth . ò Cémbal” thereis just the Prelude. But Fugue and Allegro are fol-lowing in the score.

Then, Bach changes from the double-staff nota-tion to the shorthand (German organ tablature) atthe end of the Allegro at page 4 and it goes on atthe bottom of page 1 and the score ends with “Fin”.

Sometimes it is supposed this could be a hint,that Bach had a keyboard instrument in mind, morethan the lute. This assumption is indeed very unbe-lievable. The simple lack of space is a much betterargument. Bach was, beside his incredible composi-tional labour, a very busy writer. As such he mayhave been thrifty with his paper.

BWV 998 is roughly classified a late work. In anycase after 1734, possibly from the beginning to themiddle of the 1740ies.1 (Originated between 1740and 1745 in Leipzig.)3The compositions BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 999,

1000, 1006a from Bach can be addicted to the lute,implicitly or caused of evidentiary facts.4

Francisco Tárrega (1852 – 1909) was the first orat least one of the first guitarists arranging trans-criptions from Bach’s works and releasing them tothe public. But not from the lute works.

Agustín Barrios (1885 – 1944) was worldwide oneof the first guitarists making audio-records. A Bachrecording has survived.

At the beginning of the 20th c. Hans DagobertBruger (1894 – 1932) published an edition with se-ven Bach compositions for lute, more precise for thelute guitar.5 Andrés Segovia (1893 – 1987) heardthis and asked Bruger, if he could use it as a basisfor his own transcriptions.6

After or beneath Tárrega, Barrios and Segovia anumber of guitarists published editions and audio-records from Bach’s compositions. Why? BecauseBach’s works belong to the highest quality sourcesfor guitar-transcriptions at least from his time.
