The chair can be stacked on its armrests, leaving space between the seats. If linking device are fitted, these will not affect stackability or chafe the seats. Underneath, the chairs will be prepared for other versions. There are already a number of ideas for a complete series of chairs, for instance with wooden legs and a castor base.

The chair will be manufactured in a number of standard colours and will also be available in special colours to order.

At Johanson Design we are always concerned about environmental aspects. This new chair will be recyclable.

at first glance, it seems quite simple but you can be deceived by appearance. if you are interested in design, then you will know that simplicity can be technically complicated. the self-evident is really an illusion. Jonas Lindvall, a well-known furniture designer and architect who can boast numerous award-winning projects on his cv, was engaged by Johanson design about two years ago to design an armchair that would give a ‘soft’ impression. Now, Lindvall isn’t keen on following design trends; on the contrary, in everything he designs there is an element of timelessness. during the whole process, from initial sketch to finished product, small alterations regarding comfort and stackability are normally discussed in depth and adjusted. When the design has been approved the next step is to try out upholstery and finishes. this is the first time that Johanson design and Lindvall will be using gas injection moulding and the method entails a considerable economical investment. Among other things, the tooling, which weighs up to 60 tons, must meet the highest standards and withstand both high pressures and great temperature differences. the production process requires hot plastic to be sprayed into a mould together with a gas, which means that the plastic is forced out towards the sides of the mould and an air-gap is created in the middle. the plastic is then cooled rapidly and removed from the mould. the finished chair looks as though it has been made in one single piece but actually comprises two parts that have been formed together – a thin shell and a core. the core is made of polypropylene and fibre glass, while the shell is made of another plastic. together, the two layers form a hollow casting. the method requires no finishing work on the piece, as all the precision detailing has already been done at the model stage. the aluminium legs are then screwed to the framework from underneath. the finished chair weighs 5 kg. “When you press the start button production is extremely fast, only one and a half minutes per unit. So it’s easy to feel a bit nervous before you can see that everything is turning out alright,” admits Jonas Lindvall.

This year’s conversation piece from Johanson Design will be ready to leave the factory in the spring. Let’s take a preview of one of the company’s biggest ventures ever – a stackable chair with aluminium legs. Seat, backrest, armrest and gliders in synthetic rubber.

Chairs, sofas, tables – in fact almost everything that Johanson Design creates for its Swedish and Interna tional customers is made in Markaryd. Having our main production at one single site generates numerous advantages, such as flexibility, short lead times, a good work environment and high quality.

the modern site of johanson design – a family business owned and run by the brothers Paul and dan Johanson – is situated in markaryd in southern Sweden. With its tradition of entrepreneurship, and backed up by solid craftsmanship and professional pride, the company thrives in a creative atmosphere, continually producing top-quality modern design. Almost all manufacturing takes place in markaryd at a production plant that is unique in the Swedish furniture industry, with 45 employees engaged in woodwork, assembly, cutting, sewing, upholstering, packing and deliveries. the company’s subsidiary metector, whose 17 employees manufacture all the metal parts, is also situated in markaryd. during a tour around the premises (in total 8,500 m2, of which 500 m2 comprise offices and an exhibition area) one notices how closely everything is linked, but without being based on the assembly line principle. At the spot called “the Heart”, the assembly, upholstery, woodwork and packing stages all meet, which greatly facilitates the production process.

Another unusual feature is the lack of machinery. the only real piece is the large cutting machine that simultaneously cuts fabrics, according to digitalized pattern outlines, for a large number of chairs. All other tasks are based on craftsmanship and traditional furniture manufacturing methods – for example, all leather is cut manually and all frames are made by hand. Among the many advantages of manufacturing entirely in markaryd are flexibility and short lead times. Having total control over all stages makes it easier to direct resources and materials, and guarantees reliability, security and lower costs.

between 300 and 400 items are produced on an average day and by keeping a large stock it is easy for Johanson design to swiftly meet customer demands and accept late orders. A good example of this was when a London restaurant recently ordered 81 ios barstools for delivery within a few days. the order was easily met. furthermore, flexibility means that products can be rapidly customized to meet customer demands. more than 25,000 metres of various fabrics are available from stock and, when it comes to metal details, there are 64 multicolour shades to choose from, as well as a range of chrome platings. And there are no problems if you want different colours on the metal

“We have a great team and the work is fun and varied. I like the furniture design very much and it is exciting when new models are introduced.”shukrije maloku, frame assembler

“I am greatly proud of being part of the craft tradition at Johanson Design. My task is to solve the production challenges, often at short notice, and to make sure that everything runs smoothly, for instance, the assembly line and deliveries.”Peter jönsson, production manager

“We help each other and it is very practical having everything made here in Markaryd. My work is rewarding and it is really interesting dealing with all the details.”ado Velic, upholsterer

cASeframes or legs of 64 chairs: this is a service unique to Johanson design. A good working environment, including good ergonomics and high environmental standards, goes without saying.

Our environmental work complies with iSO 14001 and several products have gained Nordic ecolabel certification. Having only a few sub-contractors, no intermediate transports and our own fleet of trucks, and with motorways and ports nearby, transports are kept to a minimum. this is an environment-friendly concept and shortens delivery times. the major advantage of manufacturing at a single site is that it helps Johanson design to maintain an overall high quality throughout the product chain, from the smallest design detail to the delivery of the finished product – from markaryd to public environments and satisfied customers all over the world.

“This line of business develops fast and is exciting. We always need to be a step ahead and to continue to develop new models. This is why I am happy to participate in developing a design for introduction in the 2020’s.”stefan hultén, supervisor at the glue and wood department

“Working with furniture is very interesting, especially when craftsmanship is called for. The tasks are varied and demand high precision, as so many different fabrics are used for the different models.”margareta schölin, seamstress

Cocoon is a modern pan-Asian restaurant, with several dining areas, two sushi bars, a cocktail bar and a lounge. The venue overlooks busy Regent Street in central London, close to Piccadilly Circus. At the bar, guests sit on barstools made by Johanson Design.

the cocoon concept was inspired by the food halls of Asia and the ancient cooking techniques of Japan, china and thailand. the restaurant aims to create the most contemporary of Asian dishes and to prepare recipes with a perfect balance of these three Asian cuisines, offering exquisite flavour, texture and taste.

its futuristic design has won several restaurant industry awards, including the theme bar & restaurant award for “best design” and the Harpers & moet restaurant award for “best Scene”. One of the ingredients that shapes the seductive ambience is the ios barstool from Johanson design. “i suggested using the ios barstool in the restaurant because of its high quality, comfort and style. it had the right appearance to be a continuation of the theme of the existing furniture, mainly due to its tulip shape,” says max Pilbeam, contracts account manager at conran contracts, who work in close conjunction with the world’s leading furniture suppliers. Johanson design supplied 22 ios adjustable barstools (seat height 63–88 cm) in red alcantara for the cocktail bar at cocoon. this is where guests can choose from an extensive bar menu, for example, crispy aromatic duck rolls, thai crab cakes or steamed dim sum. A wide range of exotic Asia-inspired cocktails are also served. “there are plans to open a venue in dubai, with the same cocoon concept, which is really exciting. And, as the restaurant is currently refreshing its design, i hope that we will get the opportunity to replace the existing tables with 40 tables in different sizes from Johanson design, also based on the tulip-shape concept,” adds max Pilbeam. All in all, the high-end, exquisitely designed cocoon restaurant in London offers its guests a superb and varied experience of top-of-the-line pan-Asian cuisine in a relaxed and modern environment.

“ Rib has Nordic Ecolabel certification and the chair was perfectly suited to the environmental profile of the project.”

Server is situated on fjärde bassängvägen 13–15, a new road in the Norra djurgårdsstaden district which extends from frihamnen towards Hjorthagen. this is an area where comprehensive refurbishment of old properties is taking place and will include both new dwellings and workplaces. the building in which Server is located is new and built to stringent environmental standards. it has a white façade and large windows, is seven storeys high and is home to tieto enator’s 1,400 employees. A wide marble stairway leads up to a glazed courtyard, which Server shares with an information desk and a more secluded lobby for the employees. the restaurant, however, is also open to the public. its reputation has spread and lunch guests now come from far and wide. christofer Lavesson, one of tema’s architects, is responsible for bringing together and incorporating a number of great ideas at Server. together with the restaurateur, he drew up the plans for the restaurant and then created a design concept inspired by the same principles used in an art gallery – a strict and minimalized background carefully accented using colour and form. “rib has Nordic ecolabel certification and the chair was perfectly suited to the environmental profile of the project. it is also stackable and made of felt, which absorbs and dampens noise. Sound absorbent felt was applied under the discus table tops, which made them even more suitable in this venue,” explains christofer Lavesson. from the very start, the property owner’s ambition was to create a building that would meet the eu requirements for green buildings. And that meant paying careful attention to every part, down to the smallest detail. Among other things, the acoustics were a real challenge, as the floor was hard and the ceiling high. the final result is impressive: there is a remarkable quietness, even when the restaurant is full of guests.

designer johan lindstén

at an early age, only thirteen, when attending woodwork classes, Johan Lindstén decided to become a furniture designer. His motivation never left him and later on he studied industrial design at växjö university, cabinet-making on Öland and furniture design at carl malmsten ctd (centre for Wood technology and design). Although he has kept his interest in wood, other materials have attracted his attention. Now, it’s the meetings between them that fascinate – between metal and rubber, and wood and fabrics. He is also very concerned about details and how new forms originate from the interaction between different parts of a piece of furniture. And about how the design can be exploited visually and in-fluence the overall expression of a piece. Speed, his first chair for Johanson design, had a visible steel frame. if this is then finished in different ways, the whole character of the chair can be radically changed. this is how Johan Lindstén prefers to work, by delivering a platform that others can transform into their own product by choosing its colour or upholstery. Johan Lindstén and Johanson design started collaboration in 2008 when he was preparing for his finals. instead of working completely on his own, he decided to take the train to markeryd and presented his portfolio. He thought that it would be fun to have a prospective manu-facturer right from the start! dan and Paul Johanson liked both his way of thinking and his furniture ideas. And they offered to guide him through his finals project for his design course. And out into working life. this year, collaboration has resulted in new chairs – with shell chairs, arm chairs and lounge versions. the design theme for Sport, as the series is called, reflects Johan Lindstén’s interpretation of car design concepts in the 1960s. the aerodynamic, sweeping lines have been transposed to chairs with soft radiuses. the seams in the dish-shaped seats are important details that emphasize the soft contours. Johan Lindstén har recently started up his own design studio on Kvarnholmen, an island on the outskirts of central Stockholm. And he was recently invited to exhibit his work at Salone Satellite, the talent section for young designers at the milan furniture fair in April. However, it looks like he will remain a faithful contributor to Johanson design even in the future. He likes how they work. And they are not afraid to surprise him by introducing unexpected elements and investing in well thought out design processes to reach optimal functionality.

Leafs is a wall-mounted sound absorber designed and inspired from the beauty of nature and architecture. When autumn connects its grip on the nature and foliage loses its abundant glory the leafs make the nature move into offices and homes again. The idea was to recreate the feeling Johan experience when spring and summer is in its glory, and for Johan the leafs is a great symbol of this rebirth.

And then there are others – the Ocean of Storms on the Moon, for instance.

MoonThe Ocean of Storms is an enormous and irregular lava field on the front side of the Moon. During millions of years different celestial bodies has collided here. Meteoroids, asteroids and comets has created this marvellous, beautiful, barren geological deformation. This landscape has inspired me when creating the new sound absorbent for Johanson Design.

Inspired by photographs of its craters and mountain ranges, he recently designed a new series of sound absorbers – Moon. Comprising wall-mounted modules of pressed felt, its various sizes and shapes can be combined in different ways to perfectly match the spaces in question. Moon is a long-awaited, flexible addition to Johanson Design’s ranges of furniture and fittings for offices and public areas.

they first teamed up when he was commissioned to refurbish Sture compagniet, a well-known nightclub in Stockholm. this is when Alexander Lervik discovered Johanson design’s great potential: as well as being experts at manufacturing furniture they could also guarantee consistent quality. And, from their point of view, Johanson design saw that Alexander was a true craftsman. He was inquisitive while remaining cautious and his designs were well thought out while still providing elements of surprise and colour. Subsequent production after this initial venture has included chairs, with and without arm rests, tables, a range of sofas and bar furnishings. One thing that Alexander Lervik truly appreciates is being close to pro-duction. coming to the factory in markaryd and with his own eyes seeing both opportunities and limitations has made his work more fun and the results better. it has also allowed him to adapt designs on the spot and this hands-on approach suits Alexander Lervik’s temperament perfectly. insight into the manufacturing process also provides him with an oppor-tunity to influence the business side of things. Adapting one’s design to production processes is always a challenge but also helps to keep costs down.

Eight years have passed since Alexander Lervik joined Johanson Design’s team of designers.

he often uses words like ‘simplification’ and ‘stylization’ when describing his ambitions to both save materials and attain a completely special lightness or, rather, airiness. And this is important; it’s all part of the concept. for mattias Ljunggren, the air surrounding furniture is also a part of the design. mattias Ljunggren first got in touch with Johanson design about fifteen years ago and they have been working together ever since. then, in the mid 90s, the company had quite a few ‘standard’ products in its catalogue, many of which had a strong 60s feeling, with a rather hard-boiled attitude. Since joining up, mattias Ljunggren has designed a number of pieces which have now become the new classics of the collection. respect between a company and its designers is essential and in mattias Ljunggren’s opinion Johanson design is both quick and alert. this makes them fun to work with; they are always interested in finding new solutions and are not afraid of investing in new ideas. And what does Johanson design think about mattias Ljunggren? they have complete confidence. Quite simply, he knows what he’s doing.

Simplicity and concentration are the hallmarks of Mattias Ljunggren’s design.

Pengelly design is housed in an old factory building in earlsfield in southwest London. And as far as founder Simon Pengelly is concerned, any company he works with has to radiate something that he can sympathise with. they must have a common goal and work intimately towards it. the chemistry between Simon and Johanson design worked from the very start and this was why he agreed to join forces a couple of years ago. many design industry products are here today and gone tomorrow, influenced by short-lived trends. this is something that does not appeal to Simon Pengelly. He wants to think long-term, so that both he and his client have time to develop their ideas. designing good products for lots of people at affordable prices is one of his professional ambitions. He likes to become involved from the very start when a new piece of furniture is being developed – and follow it all the way through to its launch and subsequent marketing. in short, Simon Pengelly’s furniture can be described as follows: the pieces are easy to comprehend and are commercially viable, while always displaying that little extra, a subtle attraction that can be hard to put your finger on.

“ A well-designed chair has to please the eye from any angle. Anything less will just not do!”
