JOHN BLUM PIANO John Blum was born in New York City and has been performing internationally for over 20 years. He has an MFA in Music from Bennington College and has studied with Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon, Milford Graves, and Borah Bergman. Blum is an underground legend of the downtown music scene in NYC , known as a musician who aims for the very personal, conveying the concepts of honesty and integrity in his playing. His antecedents are apparent: late romanticism, the second Viennese School, Stride, Boogie-Woogie, Be-Bop and Free Jazz, but John has absorbed all of these styles to find a unique voice that defies classification. Currently he is focusing on his work as a soloist, performing throughout the U.S. Europe, and Canada. "John Blum is visceral at the keys, with a classicist's touch and an avant-gardist's fury…his music has meaning, and its power runs deep." ---John Barrett, JAZZUSA "Blum reveals his inner being through his art, and the listening experience becomes very personal. He throws down the gauntlet, and the astute observer is the richer for accepting the challenge.” ---Frank Rubolino, ONE FINAL NOTE “His extraordinary skill and passion are employed in a heart, soul and mind endeavor of such rarity and purity it cannot be ignored." --Tony Porter, SHAKENSTIR “Who begat Eye” "In The Shade Of Sun" Chosen as one of the Top TenTop Ten New Releases Of 2009 —ETCETERA MAGAZINE Chosen as Best Jazz New Release of 2009 --WIRE MAGAZINE "Astrogeny" "One of the strongest Free Jazz releases on the year" --SIGNAL TO NOISE MAGAZINE "A testament to improvisational unity" --ALLABOUTJAZZ MAGAZINE "EXPLOSIVE PIANISM! --New York Times
