    Research: Practice and Ideas

How does Shoichi Aoki incorporate the photographs in his artmaking practice.

Practice: Aoki took the photographs in FRUiTS to document what he believed was an evolving social phenomenon among Japanese teenagers. Digital Cameras, a wide-angle lens and intermittent usd of flash were the only tools Aoki used to take his photographs in the streets of Tokyo’s Harajuku district.

“I just walk up to them and tell them who I am, ask if I can take a photo and them just get them to fill out a short questionnaire… each photo has a short description with it- what they like, perhaps it’s music or whatever, what they are doing, how old they are etc.”.
