Good Morning
This last week I had the opportunity to show my “coal juggling” skills with some people. I won’t share too many details; I don’t want to encourage others to follow my example. Basically, it is just like it sounds – juggling hot coals. The key is don’t hold the red-hot coal too long so it doesn’t burn you. You throw the coal around in your hand – or from hand to hand – without getting burned: If you leave the coal in one place too long, you get burned. It is not an activity I recommend because no matter how good one might be, eventually you will get burned. Some people have been burned very badly.
Why does someone play this game? Although the orange and yellow streaks of the coals may look “pretty cool” flying through the air, most people play this game for the danger. There is a sense of fun – doing something that supposedly can’t be done, and flirting with the risk of serious injury.
Many people approach sin in the same way. They reason within themselves “as long as I don’t stay involved in it too long, I won’t get hurt. It’s dangerous, exciting, and fun.” Everyone who plays this game ends up getting hurt – and it’s not a burn that goes away with a little ointment and time. Usually this kind of wound ruins one’s life and deeply hurts those in your life.
We may think we can juggle sin in and out of our lives without getting hurt, but it doesn’t work that way. Let’s stop playing games and recognize sin for the dangerous thing it is. Let’s all follow the advice found in the book of Hebrews:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1
