When h1s Squadron Commander was shotdowndurlngthe inttfal attack upon an enemy aircraft carrier, Captain Fleming led the r•matnder of the division with such fearless determination that he dived h1s own plane to the perllouslf low altitude of four hundred feet before releasing h1s bomb. Althoqh h1s craft wu riddled by 179 hits 1n the bl1ster1ng hail of fire that burst upon h1m from Japanese fighter guns and anti-aircraft batteries, he palled out with only two minor wounds 1nfllcted upon htmaelf. On the night of June 4, when the Squadron Commander lost h1s way and became separated from the others, Captain Fl•mtng brought h1s own plane 1n for a safe landing at its base despite h1•-1rdous weather conditions and total darkness. The following day, lfte1" less than four hours' sleep, he led the second d1v1a1on d. h1s squadron 1n a coordtnated glide-bombing and dive-bombing assault upon a Japanese batileship. Undeterred by a fateful approach glide, during which h1s ship was struck and set lfire, he grimly pressed home his attack to an altitude d. five hundred feet, releasedhls bomb to score a nea.r-mlss on the stern of his target, then crashed to the sea 1n flames.
