Principal’s Message
Dear Parents/Guardians, Happy New Year! We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and that you are well rested. Here we are in our first full month of winter. With the cold weather settling in, it is important that children do not come to school too early. Children are not to arrive at school until 8:45 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. Please help your child watch the time and let them know when to leave for school so they arrive at the right times. Please speak to your children about winter safety. It is important that they do not play on the snow banks . They need to walk on the sidewalks safely and only cross streets at the street corners, after they have checked for traffic both ways. Children also need to stay away from the rivers as the ice is unpredictable during the winter. Thank you to all of the families who participated in our Family Craft Night on December 8th . The staff at the school and from West Central Community Program worked hard to create an evening of fun for all. It was also great to see so many families out for our Holiday Breakfast on December 20th. In January many of our clubs and activities start again and there will be a few new ones for students to participate in. In late January our next session of Engaging Fusion starts again with guest artists working with each of the grade 1-6 classrooms once a week for four weeks. Our Parent & Community Advisory will meet on January 12th at 9 am in the Family Room. Everyone is welcome. Please come and support the school.
“This is my wish for you: peace of mind, prosperity through the year, happiness that multiplies, health for you and yours, fun around every
corner, energy to chase your dreams and joy to fill your holidays!”
-- D.M. Dellinger We wish all of our families a wonderful 2017! Sincerely, Lucy Schnaider Wendy Verbong Principal Vice Principal

Mindfulness Club
We have been learning how to pay aenon to our lives, here and now, with kindness and
curiosity. Each week, students focus on a different strategy to help calm their bodies and to feel
more focused. They have pracced mindfulness through bubble blowing, breathing techniques,
drawing, and yoga.
We are connuing Mindfulness Club every Tuesday in the Library to help make this pracce
habit forming and to help calm the mind and body.
Thank you to the Mindfulness Club members who aend every Tuesday! Check out the photos
of members praccing bubble blowing, doing body scans, and drawing.
Room 101 Ms. Yun Happy New Year! Over the past few months, it has been very busy for Room 101! In November we had an Engaging Fusion artist, Shira Newman, come into the classroom to teach us about Pixilation. Pixilation is a stop motion technique where individual photo frames are put together to make a short video. We had a great time creating a short story where pirates were trying to find the school treasure but were surprised to find sea monsters, vampires, and robots blocking their way. What could the pirates do to solve this problem? This nail-biting cliff hanger left everyone in the class to write their own ending to the story!
In December we wrote letters to Santa, mailed our letters off to the North Pole, talked to Santa through Operation Radio Santa, AND received a letter back from Santa just before the winter break! We enjoyed JMK’s annual winter family craft night, the delicious Turkey lunch at the Portuguese Centre, and the yummy family breakfast. We also spent a fun-filled day at Technical Vocational High School where we played active games, visited Santa, and created our own ornaments. Thank you everyone that helped make December a memorable holiday season!
We have been able to learn about different types of writing along the way through letters, thank you cards, experiences, art pieces, and stories. Coming up in Room 101, we will be learning about the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Matter is all around us and we will be exploring how matter can change. We saw how different liquids come through bubble art! We cannot wait to get started and spend time reading, writing, and doing different experiments for our learning!
The Learning Lens
An In-Depth Look into Classroom Learning
The Learning Lens
An In-Depth Look into Classroom Learning During the month of December, the Nursery and Kindergarten students
in room 106 p.m. were busy learning all about the letters of the alphabet.
Each day, we focused on a new letter. We learned how to make the letter
sound and finger cue to go along with it. We learned how to print the
letter and practiced forming the letter with many different materials like
play dough, sand, and shaving cream! We sang songs about the letters,
read stories about the letters and used our letter sounds to write!
In December, we were also very busy preparing for our Nursery/
Kindergarten Winter Sing-along. The students learned many holiday songs
such as Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, We Wish
You A Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells and Must Be Santa. The children were
all so proud to perform for their families! Thank you to all the family
members that came out for our very special concert! Fun was had by all!
Mr. Jamieson
It has been another busy month for the grade 1,2,3 Phys. Ed. classes in the MPR. We
have been working on kicking skills over the past month. Good kickers look at the ball, step
beside the ball with their non-kicking foot, kick the ball and then follow through to give the
kick power. We have learned to use different parts of our foot to make the ball do different
things. If we are trying to score a goal it is best to use the top of our foot (near our shoelaces)
to kick. If we are trying to pass the ball it is best to use the inside of our foot. We have also
been prac8cing dribbling a ball to move it without using our hands.
Thank you to all the children who have been coming prepared to Phys. Ed class wearing their
runners. Please ensure that you have your runners with you every day so that you can
par8cipate safely. In January students that do not come prepared will not be able to
par8cipate in all
of our ac8vi8es.
Keep fit and
have fun!
On Wednesday December 21st the Grade 6 students played a friendly game of Floor
Hockey against the staff of JMK School. It was a wonderful 8me for everyone. Students
enjoyed compe8ng against their teachers and cheering for some wonderful shots and saves.
These games/ac8vi8es are a welcome change at school, especially during the cold winter
months! We are planning to have a staff vs students dodgeball game on the last week before
spring break. This 8me it will be the Grade 5's turn to compete against the teachers.
Musical Notes
Happy New Year from the Music Room.
We are excited for what this year may bring. The xylophones and
recorders are ready for adventure, whether they take us to the seaside,
the Recorder Karate Dojo, or on a train ride. The students
on the upper floor will be earning their recorder karate
belts so please check in with them to see how they’re
progressing.
The school choir will begin prepara8ons
for the Winnipeg Music Fes8val. They are
very excited and hard at work on the two songs they will
be presen8ng. We will once again sing Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn to
Freedom” and we are learning “Klee Wyck” by Brian Tate. Klee Wyck,
means Laughing One, and it was the name given to Emily Carr by the
people of Ucluelet. This song is a beau8ful work evoking the powerful
imagery in Emily Carr’s pain8ngs.

Bullying If you ever feel like you are getting bullied, tell your parents. Don’t let
it affect you. Bullying is not okay. It’s not okay to lay hands on other people.
Cyber bullying is when someone talks to you online the way you don't
want to be talked to. Some online things such as Facebook, Instagram, mu-
sically and more. Even when someone says something mean about you to
other people, that you don't like.
Emotional bullying is when someone bullies you and the victim does
not tell their parents or a trusted adult.
When you get bullied you feel like you can't come to school or you
want to harm yourself just because of that one person who bullies you.
No one likes to feel that way!
Stop Bullying!!!
Antoinette
Whatisbullying?
Bullying is a form of aggression where there is a power imbalance; the person doing the bullying has power
over the person being vic8mized.
Thedifferenttypesofbullying
• Physical bullying: using physical force or aggression against another person (e.g., hiOng)
• Verbal bullying: using words to verbally aQack someone (e.g., name-calling)
• Social/rela8onal bullying: trying to hurt someone through excluding them, spreading rumours or ignor-
ing them (e.g., gossiping)
Cyberbullying: using electronic media to threaten, embarrass, in8midate, or exclude someone, or to dam-
age their reputa8on (e.g., sending threatening text messages).

Thank you to all the families that filled out the Parent Survey
during the Tri-conferences in November. We have looked through
all the information and would like to share with you some of the
information we have received.
The first queson : What are some things that you find helpful in
ge ng your children to school on me? If this is difficult, what else
may help?
Many families said that what they found useful is preparing the
evening before. This can include having your children choose
their clothing, pack their lunches and set their alarm clock for
the morning. Rou8nes are important for children to establish
good healthy habits. This can include an evening snack and story
together and a set bed8me. Children need their parents guidance to
make these good choices! If you do not have an alarm clock
for your children come see Ursula in the Family
room.
The second queson: Can you share with us
some of the programs that you have enjoyed parcipang
in or would like to see offered here. ( Examples: CPR, Father support
group, Tradional parenng group, Math night, cra2 night etc.)
We have many families we would like to thank for con8nuing to
par8cipate in all our programs. We would like to invite any parent or
caregiver to all the new programs that will be offered this new year! If
you have a special talent you would like to share with other families
please see Ursula. All programs and ac8vi8es that John M King provides
are Free! If you would like to fill out the survey you can go to
