What We Understand

Page 10: John MacArthur The Prodigal Son “This elder son had no better relationship with his father than the Prodigal did when he first left home.”

The story gives fresh meaning into what it means to be “lost”

Page 11: John MacArthur The Prodigal Son “This elder son had no better relationship with his father than the Prodigal did when he first left home.”

Luke 19:10 (NIV)

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.

Page 12: John MacArthur The Prodigal Son “This elder son had no better relationship with his father than the Prodigal did when he first left home.”

But, a similar question is just as real for the younger son, “How did he act at the

banquet; the next day?”

The story ends with the question, “Did the

elder son (will I) go into the banquet?”

Page 13: John MacArthur The Prodigal Son “This elder son had no better relationship with his father than the Prodigal did when he first left home.”

The greater question may be, “What do you believe

about the father’s response to these two imagined

choices?”

Who do you believe God is? What do you believe about Him?

John 15:9 (NIV)

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ

Jesus The True Elder Brother

By telling the story in a trilogy Jesus has implied that He is the missing character in this story.

He left Father’s home to search for the lost son(s) (and daughters) and will pay any price to find them and bring them home.

Reconsider the man on the right in Rembrandt’s

painting – is he possibly the true elder brother?

John 15:9-12 (MSG)

Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you'll remain intimately at home in my love. That's what I've done — kept my Father's commands and made myself at home in his love.

John 15:9-12 (MSG)

I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you.
