BACKGROUND• It is estimated over £900 million is wasted every year by leaving domestic appliances on

when not in use.

• Domestic energy consumption increased by 7% between 1990 and 2009*

• The domestic sector was the largest electricity consumer in 2009 - 122.5 TWh *

• Collectively, individuals are responsible for over 40% of the UK’s energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.

• Using energy more efficiently is a cost effective way of cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

• Lack of information and motivation are the primary barriers to saving energy.

• Government has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050

Carbon Emission Targets The Energy Bill 2009-10 received Royal Assent on 8 April 2010. This plan aims to deliver emissions cuts of 34 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020 and of 80 per cent by 2050

34% reduction by 2020 80% reduction by 2050

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Everyone has a role to play in tackling climate change, from reducing their own emissions to planning for adaptation.

ACTION IS NEEDED NOW

Household electricity costs could go up more than 25 per cent by 2020 if greenhouse gas emissions are to be cut by a third from 1990 levels, said Lord Turner, Chairman of the Climate Change Committee.*

* 1 Dec 2008

WHAT THE PUBLIC SAY

80% of the public worry about climate change*

72 % said they would reduce their energy consumption if they knew how much they were using*

69% said they are concerned about what they can do to help protect the environment*

ZERO CARBON HOMES?

A home is only ‘zero carbon’ in the sense that it complies with a theoretical carbon requirement. It’s how we use that home that really matters. Calling a home ‘zero carbon’ could offer consumers a false promise. A home can only be genuinely zero carbon if the occupants’ lifestyles are prescribed and energy is rationed in order to balance on-site energy generation – which is both impractical and entirely politically unacceptable.

Addressing the challenge of climate change requires a more holistic approach – addressing and nurturing behavioural change in occupants and users, which in turn supports a low-carbon and sustainable lifestyle..........

EARLY CARBON SAVINGS

…..but if people have no idea of how much energy they are using they cannot be expected to understand or change their energy consumption.

• The most effective way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is to use less energy

• Help consumers help themselves by encouraging them to become more energy efficient

Page 9: John Parmenter 2 Save Energy Ltd T: 01256 383435 E: jparmenter@theowl

ENERGY SAVING STARTS IN THE HOME

• In the UK, cost came across as the strongest motivator for saving energy

– 58% cost– 37% environment

• For the mass of consumers it is about saving money first and the planet second!

• It is therefore important for your electricity monitor to measure both cost and CO2 emissions

SMART METER OR SMART MONITOR?

WARNING Consumer group Which? Has warned that smart meters will not automatically mean

cheaper bills. While smart meters will result in more accurate bills, they will not provide the information people need to manage their energy usage and cut their costs

Smart meters benefit power giants not customersIndustry to save 8 times more than households

Hi tech smart meters which automatically send details of your gas and electricity use to your supplier will save UK households just £1.43 a year – a total of £36.75m compared to annual savings of £306m a year for the energy industry!

Which? says this information will only be available to consumers if portable wireless energy monitors are rolled out alongside smart meters

OWL aims to help the fight against climate change and is set to show millions of people just how much electricity we waste in our homes, whilst highlighting the money we can all save as a result.

OWL monitors the electricity supply in both commercial and domestic situations and, for the first time, provides real-time monetary information about electricity use. When lights and appliances are turned on, OWL’s easy-to-read LCD monitor reveals exactly how much electricity is being used, how the cost of electricity per hour changes and how much harmful CO2 is being produced.

HOW OWL CAN HELP?

Page 13: John Parmenter 2 Save Energy Ltd T: 01256 383435 E: jparmenter@theowl

• Currency display for £, € and $

• Separate displays for greenhouse gas emissions, KWh, temperature and time

• Saves money by identifying simple and efficient energy saving practices

• Will assist in energy conservation and sustaining the environment

• Real time, real cost

• Can identify how much it costs to operate individual electrical appliances

• Identifies whether appliances have been left on inadvertently

• Easy to read, easy to use.

• Simple to fit

• Does NOT need to be plugged into a 13amp socket.

• Single, twin or 3 phase monitoring, up to 200 amps per phase

• Battery operated, batteries included

Page 14: John Parmenter 2 Save Energy Ltd T: 01256 383435 E: jparmenter@theowl

OWL CM119Building on the success of original OWL, features include:• An accumulative function which lets the user see their electricity

cost accumulate over any chosen period, be it daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. Changes can be tracked over time which allows users to fine tune their electricity saving strategy even better than before.

• The new multiple tariff function enables users to set their OWL to a range of tariffs (Economy 7, Night-time etc) to create an even more accurate picture of their electricity use.

• An improved battery life• Date and time function• Temperature as either ⁰C or ⁰F

Page 16: John Parmenter 2 Save Energy Ltd T: 01256 383435 E: jparmenter@theowl

CM 119 KEY FEATURES

• OWL’s monitor will display CO2 Ideal for school pupils who have an interest in Climate Change but not in cost or KWh

• OWL displays in real time Users understand this. Projecting cost over a 24 hour period is confusing and unnecessarily

complicated

• OWL’s monitor is portable OWL can be positioned anywhere in the home but usually in the kitchen where 13 amp wall

sockets are at a premium, especially in older housing stock. Consumers don’t really like plug in monitors*

• OWL will accommodate up to 4 input tariffs OWL can be used with a variety of price structures unlike other RTDs which only have inputs

for 1 or 2 tariffs

• 200A per phase Using our larger sensors, OWL can monitor 3-phase supplies up to 200A per phase allowing for installation in a variety of businesses, schools or offices.

Green Streets

• Families cut energy use by 25% and carbon dioxide by 23% in British Gas’ year-long Green Streets energy challenge*

• British Gas gave households on eight streets in eight UK cities a budget of £30,000 per street to spend on energy efficiency measures.

• All 8 streets made a combined saving of 25% on their energy bills. If every

household in the country followed suit, they could cut an average of £200 a year from their energy bills - a total of £6bn. We would also save 35million tonnes of CO2 - the annual carbon emissions of three coal-fired power stations!*

63 of the 64 households involved USED AN OWL http://www.britishgas.co.uk/flash/greenshop/flash-player.html?flashproductname=semi_OWL_sound.flv

*Centrica press release 4 March 2009

•I have to say, being a part of the British Gas Green Streets project, that the electricity monitor (we have an OWL) is THE most useful thing we own....... Polky 14 Nov 2008
