Dear Friends in Christ,
Peace and Joy to you and your loved ones!
The time has come. Lent has started. These are days to save and
savor. These are days asking us to set aside some time for God and reflect on his
blessings upon us. These are days calling us to fasting and feasting, to conversion and contemplation,
to watching and waiting, to lingering and listening, to silence and singing, to reconciling and rejoicing.
I would like to invite you to join us in this sacred season through prayer, worship and Holy
Mass. We need you, your friends, your family, and your loved ones as we gather together during these
most sacred days.
We have two beautiful places of worship—St. Jerome’s in West Long Branch and St. Mary’s in
Deal. Join us. Visit us. Pray with us.
Lasting memories have already been carved for us at those altars when we received our
sacraments. Our sincerest petitions have been carried as we walked those sacred aisles, and our
heartfelt prayers have been heard from those pews.
Other than our regular Mass schedules, we have added some Lenten devotions to make this Lent the best ever for you. We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Mary’s Church
during these Wednesdays after the 9 A.M. Mass. There will be Stations of the Cross at 11:30 A.M.
followed by Benediction. Confessions will be held in between these times.
At St. Jerome’s Church, we will have Soup, Speaker and Stations on Friday evenings. Simple
soup at 6 P.M., followed by a short reflection and a 7 P.M. Eucharistic Adoration, Stations of the Cross
and Benediction. Confessions will be held at 5 P.M.
Allow me to end with what St. Paul wrote to the people of Corinth. This was also the Second
Reading this Ash Wednesday. He said, “Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the
grace of God in vain. For he says: In an acceptable time I heard you and on the day of salvation I
helped you. Behold now is a very acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation.”
God loves you always and in all ways.
Fr. PJ
P.S. We will have the Blessing of our New Stations of the Cross at St. Jerome’s Church during the 11
A.M. Mass. Thank you, Mr. Bill Rhoads, for your generous and heartwarming donation to our place of
worship.

On the Disappearance of Sin
“Even theologians in our day have discussed the possibility of replacing confessing sin with
conversations with psychologists and sociologists. Sin does not really exist. There are only problems and these can be settled with the help of experts. Sin has disappeared and with it
forgiveness. And behind that disappearance there is the disappearance of a God who is turned
toward man.”
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Here’s One Positive Encouragement
Do you have spiritual pride? You will probably say yes. Now think about what spiritual pride means to you. Does it mean a feeling or deep pleasure or sasfacon in your religious beliefs? If so, then you are probably sharing with others the same definion that they have and feel confident in your beliefs and religion. Do you act with prejudice and distain or lack of tolerance to others who do not believe or worship as you do? Having pride in yourself or in something is very commendable, but if your pride leads to the distain of others, this pride fullness will also lead you away from God and negate your pride and spirituality. If this confuses you, just remember God wants you to do onto others as you want others to do onto you. Respect others' feelings.

The Seven Elements of Parish Life The essence of parish life is formed by seven essenal elements: Evangelizaon, Worship, Word, Community, Service, Stewardship, and Leadership. These elements constantly interrelate in parish life, each nurturing and supporng the other, with the communal celebraon of Sunday Eucharist at the center.
WORSHIP
‘Worship itself is evangelizaon, a communal witness to the sovereignty of God, the abiding presence of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the Church. The spiritual life of a parish animates its mission. Personal and communal prayer is essenal to the building up of the Body of Christ. In the celebraon of The Eucharist, sacramental and liturgical rites, individuals gather together to manifest a communal proclamaon of faith. Worship gives expression to the faith of the community and its degree of commitment to furthering the Kingdom of God.’
Descriptors of Worship in Parish Life The following “descriptors” are indicators that point toward concrete ways in which worship gets lived out in a parish: 1. The Sunday Eucharist is a priority in the life of the parish and is celebrated with full and acve
parcipaon of the parishioners. 2. Competent individuals are responsible for every aspect of liturgical celebraons. 3. Parishioners serve in many liturgical roles at liturgy. 4. Liturgical ministers are well trained and effecve in their ministries. 5. Preaching is directly related to the scriptures and to the real life experience of the people. 6. The worship space is able to accommodate the rites of the Church in a dignified and liturgically
suitable manner. 7. Liturgical art and environment are marked by noble simplicity. 8. Worship aids are contemporary and in good condion. 9. Quality in music, including instruments, musicians, and hymn selecon, enables the assembly to
parcipate in sung prayer. 10. All the sacraments are celebrated regularly, with aenon given to making them true expressions of
the life of the parish. 11. Liturgy of the World with Children is celebrated with young members of the parish. 12. Devoonal prayer is encouraged, but does not interfere with the primary sacramental celebraons of
the parish.
——————————————————————————————————-———————————————————————-
Fr. P.J. and the OLOH Pastoral Council would appreciate your feedback. Please check the box next to the number of the descriptor if you see or experience these descriptors of worship being “lived out” in our parish. You may drop your feedback (cutout from the bullen for your convenience) in the “ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS” box in the back of church at your convenience. Thank you for your connued support of our parish programs and ministries.
