As I look back on our parish, I realize that we were part of the movements of renewal in the church. 3 major sources of renewal were: Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, and Charismatic renewal. In addition, RENEW had diocesan leadership and was parish based. Christ renews his parish was very helpful in this parish also. They all gave hope and motivation to make the church and the world a better place and better experience. Of these, Charismatic renewal with its healing ministry is closely aligned with Pentecost, the solemnity we celebrate. John Kostic and Hank Wisniewski (both who have gone to eternal life), Chris and Angie Malmgren were a few that I knew personally as being very involved in Charismatic renewal. That movement had an international conference in Rome last June. I aim to speak about that since it has universal significance. Leading up to the June conference, a coordinating structure was established and given the name CHARIS standing for Catholic Charismatic Renewal International Service. Thus, the Pope wanted those in the Charismatic Renewal and the whole Church to know that the Charismatic Renewal belongs fully to the universal Church. One of the essential points emphasized by the Holy Father is the importance of communion, that is, of unity in diversity. CHARIS serves all the charismatic communities in the world. The CHARIS Statutes emphasize three dimensions: the spread of Baptism in the Holy Spirit, the unity of Christians, and service to the poor. These dimensions are at the service of evangelization. The Pope himself asks that baptism in the Holy Spirit be known throughout the Church. He did so on several occasions in a very clear way. Baptism in the Spirit is the experience of Pentecost that set the apostles on a mission. Still, compassion and charity should noticeable in disciples that go forth. They will know you are Christians by your love. Today is the feast of Pentecost. The first Christian community moved from fear and inertia to pants-on-fire enthusiasm. We have fire within us. But at times, we also have some chill within us. This feast reminds us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, the spirit of love who reminds us of our baptism and calls us to moments of fire and the realization of warmth -- for the long haul. Timing of Reopening We will continue the fast from in-person worship that we began in March for a time longer. We are trying to get to a reasonable risk for all concerned while aware of the hunger of Communion with the Lord. This continued fast from in-person worship is rooted in scripture. In 1 Corinthians 10:23-24, we read, "All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful, but not all things build up. Do not seek your own advantage, but that of the other." Regathering under very specific guidelines is now lawful, but it is not beneficial for our whole population when nearly the number of people who died of COVID-19. We are bound by Jesus' law to love our neighbors as ourselves. We sacrifice worship in our church buildings for the sake of people we love in our congregations and for the sake of people in our communities whom we will never meet. Experience shows in this time of pandemic that worship is a "superspreader" of the virus. When we go to the grocery store or to a restaurant pick-up window, we accept the inherent risk. When we gather for worship at church, however, we produce the risk. As people morally bound to live the way of love, we choose not to produce such risk. Instead, we choose to protect others and ourselves until the time when we can worship together safely. That being said the Governor is allowed outdoor activities such as worship without restricted or predictable numbers. So, we will have outdoor in-person worship first. Thank you for patience. Fr. Bill Graney

----------------------------------------------------------------------- In the face of the Covid 19 Pandemic -- Let Us Pray: As we pray for the needs of the world, we take up our call to Mission and our call to live as the Body of Christ. For those who have contracted the corona virus – may there be appropriate health care for them and may they be healed and restored to full health. For the whole of humanity –through this time of crisis, may we be led to build a world rich in mercy, bright with care for the vulnerable, enlivened with an appreciation of our connection to the natural world and renewed by an awareness of the deeply spiritual nature of life and presence of the divine. For our own country – may our leaders act with sound judgement, may citizens work together cooperatively and do as they have been asked by the government, to reduce infection rates. For health workers – may they have time to rest and recover from their work, may they be protected from the virus, and may their work bear the fruit of healthy and grateful people and communities. For all who face financial hardship because of the virus – may they not lose hope, but may all people be willing to work together and support one another, and find ways to help others in this time of need. Lord, hear our prayer.

"GOODNESS IS A FIRST PRINCIPLE OF THE UNIVERSE. GOD DECLARES IT ON THE FIRST PAGE OF THE STORY OF CREATION." BARBARA HOLMES

GOD IS ABOUT WHAT IS GOOD. GOODNESS IS A FITTING WORD FOR TODAY AS WE HONOR OUR PASTOR, FATHER BILL GRANEY, WHO WAS ORDAINED ON THIS DAY 49 YEARS AGO. THERE ARE MANY SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE BILL. HE WOULD PREFER THAT I NOT USE ANY OF THEM. THAT’S HIS AUTHENTIC HUMILITY (AND A LITTLE BIT OF ‘THE IRISH'). BUT “GOOD” I CAN GET AWAY WITH. “GOOD” IS MODEST, SIMPLE, AND WITHOUT PRETENSE. AND SO IS BILL. BILL GRANEY IS GOOD. THANKS BE TO GOD. IN A WORLD WHERE PEOPLE OFTEN JUSTIFY OR DEFEND ANY SELFISH OR RUDE THING THEY SAY OR DO, IT’S INSPIRING TO KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS GENUINELY AND CONSISTENTLY GOOD. GOOD PEOPLE BRING OUT THE GOOD IN OTHERS. WHEN YOU’RE WITH BILL, YOUR BETTER SELF EMERGES. YOU TALK IN KINDER, MORE SUPPORTIVE WAYS. YOU FIND YOURSELF MORE UNDERSTANDING AND LESS CRITICAL. YOU COME AWAY FROM YOUR TIME WITH BILL AND YOU REMEMBER SOME GOOD THING HE SAID. BILL IS VERY BENEDICTINE IN HIS WAY OF LIFE. THEIR MOTTO IS “ORA ET LABORA" (PRAY AND WORK). SAINT BENEDICT BELIEVED THAT PRAYER AND WORK ARE PARTNERS, THUS EMPHASIZING CONTEMPLATION WITH ACTION. BILL HAS ALWAYS BEEN FAITHFUL TO A LIFE OF PRAYER THAT SHAPES THE GOOD WORK HE DOES. SAINT BENEDICT WROTE, "THE LORD WAITS FOR US TO TRANSLATE HIS TEACHINGS INTO ACTION.” THAT’S THE ESSENCE OF BILL GRANEY. LET US GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR THE BLESSING OF ONE AS GOOD AS FATHER BILL GRANEY. LET US CONTINUE OUR PRAYERS FOR HIM AND FOR HIS INTENTIONS. MAY WE SHOW OUR APPRECIATION BY EMULATING THE QUALITIES AND VIRTUES THAT MAKE HIM SUCH A REMARKABLE AND DEDICATED SERVANT OF GOD. WE LOVE YOU!

The Annual Catholic Appeal, with its theme, Seeing Christ in the Faces of Others invites each of us to open our eyes and recognize Him in those who seek our help. It is a reminder

of the parable when Jesus said that “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) That verse was a favorite of St. Teresa of Calcutta, who said, “I see Jesus in every human being”. Within the next few days, you may receive a mailing from Bishop Malooly inviting your participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal. For those of you who have given to this year’s Appeal, thank you for your generosity. For those who have not, please prayerfully consider supporting this important effort. In the meantime, you are encouraged to learn more about the Annual Catholic Appeal by visiting www.cdow.org/annualcatholicappeal.

TAKING IT HOME by Deacon John

Our Catholic faith tradition tells us that we have access to the long ago events of Jesus’ life through people, the people we call the Church. Though we have not seen him nor touched him, Jesus is still alive in Spirit through the hearts and minds of people like you and me who believe. And through the inspiration of the Spirit, we live the memory of Jesus and make that memory a living and real presence to our lives now. Read more at https://resurrectionde.org/deacons-notes

GOSPEL REFLECTION

The readings selected for Trinity Sunday provide an opportunity to reflect on the nature of God. Over recent weeks, we have celebrated the Ascension and Pentecost—both of which reveal something about the nature of God through Jesus and the Spirit. Trinity Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate the unity of God whom we acknowledge as Father, Son, and Spirit.

Today’s gospel reminds us that there is a seamless continuity between the different experiences of God. Although we sometimes regard the God of the Old Testament as judging and vengeful, today reminds us that God is, was, and always will be a God of love. The gospel reminds us that “God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son.” Love is the characteristic of God that is experienced as Father, Son, and Spirit. God loved the world into being and loved the people so much that God made a covenant relationship with them and repeatedly drew them back into that relationship when they strayed. God loved the world and the people so much that God became physically present through Jesus as yet another attempt to draw all people into an awareness of the loving relationship God desired for them. When Jesus could no longer remain a physical presence in the world, God’s Spirit became more evident to continue the work of drawing people into that loving relationship with God.

Rather than focusing on the mystery of the Trinitarian God, today is an opportunity to marvel at the single-mindedness of God who is so determined to reveal the length and breadth of God’s love to us. That revelation has been made manifest in different ways throughout time but remains constant and unchanging.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION --REVELATION 1:8

(R.) Alleluia, alleluia. Glory to the Father, the Son, and the

Holy Spirit; to God who is, who was, and who is to

come. (R.) Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL -- JOHN 3:16-18

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

but that the world might be saved through him.

Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT: The teaching on the Trinity was not formally constructed until the 4th Century and was documented in the creed that emerged from the Council of Nicaea. The Creed that is said today in the Sunday liturgy is a version of that original Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed spells out Christian beliefs about the nature of God, Jesus, and the Spirit and was worded very carefully to negate a variety of heretical views that were held at the time. It is as much a statement about what we do not believe as it is a statement about what we do believe! SCRIPTURAL CONTEXT: At no point in the New Testament is the term “Trinity” used. That understanding of the nature of God came much later. However, there are a number of scriptural references that led to this theological understanding. The Annunciation, the baptism of Jesus and the great commissioning of the disciples to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all examples of the three persons of God being recognized or active in the gospels. Today’s second reading [1 Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12-13] shows St Paul using the three experiences of God as a blessing of the people of Corinth. LIVING THE GOSPEL: Every time we bless ourselves or begin prayer with the sign of the cross, we reaffirm our belief in the Trinity. That seemingly simple prayer, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” is, in fact, a confirmation of our belief in a triune God—three in one. The earliest use of the sign of the cross only involved tracing a small cross with the thumb or finger on the forehead, as it is still done in baptisms or blessings today. Later, describing the shape of the cross on forehead, abdomen, and shoulders became common practice.
