VOLUNTEER HELP WANTED Free lunches in schools and kindergartens project starts up for 2019 this Monday 11 February. To all our returning volunteers and school communities welcome back! If there is anyone who was a past volunteer or is considering volunteering please contact me on 027 2250503 or via return email. We currently make the sandwiches at St Michaels Crypt (the hall underneath the church on lake road) on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon/s and as many hands make light work we would love more volunteers. I am happy to have secondary students assisting. We usually meet here at 330pm and are normally finished up by 415pm. Most volunteers help on either a fortnightly or a weekly basis. We can adjust the time to 4pm if that better suits the majority. Please let me know your thoughts, opinions and availability God Bless Catherine Phizacklea E: [email protected]

John Paul College encourages students turning 14 this year and upwards to consider signing up to the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Not all learning happens in the classroom. Young people need experiences outside the classroom to become committed, responsible and fulfilled citizens of the world. The Award is open to all 14-24 year olds regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests and is the world’s leading youth achievement award. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their achievements. Find out more info here https://dofehillary.org.nz Register online here https://dofehillary.org.nz/do%20the%20award/do-the-award-online-record-book?src=nav

Kia ora tātou. Warm greetings to you all from the Counsellors. Now that the year is underway it’s time to begin regular contributions to the school newsletter from the Counselling team. Our hope is that this space will provide helpful information to you about some of the work we do at school, as well as providing a link to resources you might find interesting and topical as you parent your children and teens. In each column we will present some aspect of our work as counsellors at JPC and we welcome your feedback. The JPC Counselling Department provides confidential and professional support to students at the school and welcomes the involvement of whanau in supporting our young people. We take referrals from parents and caregivers, teachers, deans and the students themselves. And now, for parents new to the school, some introductions: Nancy Macmillan (Ph extn 8854. Email [email protected] ) Some of you may know me from my previous role as an English teacher here at JPC. In 2011 I embarked on study through the University of Waikato towards a Master of Counselling, completing this at the end of 2013. For the past five years I have been Head of Counselling at John Paul College. This role sees me working closely with students to support them in working through challenges they face in their lives. I welcome your input as parents and whanau in caring for and supporting our students. Neil Carter (Ph extn 8808. Email [email protected] ). I have an 18 year history as a community and faith based youth worker, running youth groups and teaching life skills programmes in schools. I have spent many years working with young people and their families, helping them deal with the issues life throws at them. In 2014 I completed a Diploma in Counselling from Bethlehem Tertiary Institute. I pride myself on being non-judgmental and easy to talk to. My goal is not to tell students what to think or believe, but to assist them in understanding themselves and supporting them as they journey through life. We have enjoyed getting underway this year with introductions of ourselves and the counselling service we provide, to our new students, mostly those in years 7 and 9. We have also spent time with students in our ever-growing international department. It is a continued focus this year to further support these students who are so far from home. In the next week, we will get underway with the Year 12 Peer Mentoring programme, in which a group of Year 12 students volunteer to mentor junior students. This programme has great benefits for both the seniors, who develop leadership skills through service to others, and the juniors, who gain a buddy in the senior school to guide them through various aspects of life at JPC. Also new this year, is the Atawhai Committee. This student-run committee works, with guidance from the counsellors, in support of student mental health and well-being within JPC. This year the Atawhai Captain is Ashleigh Webb, our Deputy Head girl. She and her enthusiastic year 13 team, have some exciting initiatives planned for the year ahead.

To contact us please either phone, email or just scan the QR code in this column. This notification goes straight to the counsellors who will get in touch to arrange an appointment time.

To read more about our Counselling services see our Counselling flier which is available through the JPC app. Go to Links then select Counselling flier.

Na mihi nui kia koe, Nancy Macmillan and Neil Carter.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ GATEWAY Gateway is known as the bridge between school and the world beyond. For senior students considering a trade, the Gateway programme allows them to get hands-on experience out with tradespeople while gaining credits. It can be an excellent stepping stone into an apprenticeship. But it is not all about the trades! We place students into a variety of workplaces including the Service Industries (event management, retail, computing and hospitality), Primary Industries (animal care and forestry), and Social and Community Services (early childhood education and health care). Gateway helps students explore a career that's right for them, along with an introduction to basic skills in that industry. Year 12 or 13 students interested in joining the Gateway Programme, or finding out more about what is involved, should see Rachael Hindrup (the Gateway Coordinator) in the Careers Department. Also parents, if you have a business and would like to take on a student in a Gateway placement, please contact Rachael at [email protected]

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ STUDYLINK Studylink helps students make informed choices about their student finance, how to apply for it and manage it online. Follow this link for help with what you need to do when you are starting study:
