Contextual Realities
From May to September 2012, areas within the JTG district were affected by service delivery protests.
As a consequence of these protests, Grades 1-11 learners at 64 primary and high schools received no teaching for extended period of time.
A total of 1250 of these learners, who were in grade 11 last year, will be sitting for the NSC at the end of this year.
Although adapted curriculum programmes were put into place to catch-up on time lost, the 2012 exam results reflect substantial content knowledge gaps:

Contextual Realities
English FAL: Poor grasp of writing skills. Poor sentence and
paragraph construction, poor vocabulary and spelling.
Accounting Unable to add up the component to calculate Unable to calculate the mark-up percentage in
sales in specific items in the projected income statement.
Unable to understand the basic concepts of equity , assets and liabilities and sub-categories into current and non-current items.

Contextual Realities
Life Sciences Learners not familiar with biological terminology Limited knowledge of concepts such as artificial
selection and genetic engineering Unable to understand scientific data
Mathematics Learners experience difficulty with factorisation,
quadratic sequence , analytic geometry, Euclidean geometry, probability and linear programming.
Difficulty with basic mathematical operations. Lack of simple logic if y=2x than x=1/2 y

Business Studies Learners unable to understand instruction
verbs such as differentiate, evaluate, interpret and analyse.
Learners unable to apply logic to solve problems etc.

Objectives of intervention
Raise learner performance for the JTG district to contribute to province attaining an 80% plus Grade 12 pass rate
Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who become eligible for a Bachelors programme at a university.
Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass Mathematics.
Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass Physical Science.

Objectives of intervention
Institutionalise learners at camps to ensure maximum curriculum coverage and quality school based assessment
Provide learners with an enabling environment to maximise study time
Provide learners with exam techniques, full exposure to career opportunities and mentoring

Selection Criteria
Selection criteria for administrators and supervisors
Should be very responsible persons Should be willing to be away from home for
extended periods of time Should have strong management skills and
be able to manage a camp with more than 400 learners, 20 tutors and 12 supervisors
Should be willing to utilise own transport Should be a strong administrator and

Camp venues
Warrenton Cultural Resort/Transka (430) The Warrenton camp will be hosting boys
and girls from the 7 schools identified for the intervention. A total of 265 boys will be accommodated at Warrenton cultural resort and 165 girl learners will stay at Transka resort.
Reakofella Resort (180) This camp will be hosting girl learners
from, Ba-Ga Lothlare, Ba-Ga Phadima, Segopotso, Pitso-Janjie and Remmogo.

Camp 1-Cultural Resort (Warrenton)
A total of 430 learners from 7 schools will be attending camp 1
Subjects offered will include : Setswana HL, Math Lit, Mathematics, Physical
Sciences, Accounting, B/Studies, Economics, Life Sciences, Agric Sciences, History, Geography, English FAL
Schools in camp 1 will be: Ba-Ga Lothlare, Ba-Ga Phadima, Segopotso,
Pitso-Janjie, Remmogo, Rekgaratlhile, Itlotleng

Camp 4-Rekaofella (Barkley West)
A total of 180 girl learners from 5 schools will be attending camp 4.
Subjects offered will include : Setswana HL, Math, Physical Sciences,
Afrikaans SAL, Geography, Life Sciences, History, Agric Sciences.
Schools in camp 5 will be: Ba-Ga Lothlare, Ba-Ga Phadima, Segopotso,
Pitso-Janjie, Remmogo. Learners will be staying at Reakofella Resort.

Challenges The erection of classrooms is already at a
critical stage. The most efficient model in terms of time available should be implemented as soon as possible. ( 19 working days left, 23 if Saturdays are included.)
Upfront payment of the service providers should be loaded onto the system by 01 July 2013.
Meetings with tribal authorities should still happen during the month of June.
Funding (contribution) from mines still not decided on.
