Principal’s Message—March

“When teaching and learning are visible, there is a greater likelihood of students reach-

ing higher levels of achievement.” - John Hattie (education researcher)

This Thursday night, March 2, between 6:30-8 PM, we have an opportunity to connect

as a learning community of students, teachers, and parents during our Open House.

The better connected parents are to their children’s school, the more invested students

and teachers are in celebrating our learning successes.

This year, we are organizing ourselves with 3 goals in mind: to build a greater sense of

community, to celebrate recent and/or current learning of our students with parents,

and to showcase the different aspects of our school for future families. Teachers and

students have been organizing some displays of learning in all program areas, so par-

ents and guardians can not only see what’s happening in their child’s learning now, but

to see what’s happening in other grades and option areas. All parents and students are

encouraged to drop in to see, and inquire about the learning connected to

Core program areas of Humanities, Math & Science

Fine Arts of Drama, Visual Art and Music

Career & Tech Foundation programs of Outdoor Ed, Construction, and Foods

Office and Resource Staff will also be available to address individual questions and

needs

Parents are encouraged to ask questions to understand what they are seeing, what was

meant to be learned through the activities, and how the learning of students is as-

sessed.

This year, we will also want to learn from you. When you arrive, parents will be offered

a guide of locations with activities to experience. The guide will also offer you an op-

portunity to give us feedback on your experience, both positive and constructive.

Great schools are places of reflective learning, knowing what we do well, and having a

plan for how to improve. In advance, thank you for joining us Thursday evening, shar-

ing and supporting our learning.

45 Students participated in the Geography Challenge this month sponsored by Canadian Geographic Society. It encourages students to push the limits of their geographic knowledge and apply geographic thinking skills.

Congratulations to Jonah R, the overall champion who will represent John Ware in the on-line provincial level competition later this year. Jonah will also receive a medal from the Canadian Geographic Society and a one-year subscription to the Canadian Geographic magazine.

The Wizard of Wonderland / Dorothy Meets Alice

Students have been preparing for this year’s stage production of the Wizard of Wonderland. The audience will be entertained as they view a hilarious meeting of two popular stories, The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. In-credible characters come alive as a boy; Judson (Sebastian S) is caught between Wonderland and Oz in a dream. He comes across Dorothy (Chloe) and Alice (Emily W.) and an array of characters as they head to their destinations to fulfill their needs while avoiding the Wicked Witch (Emily S) and the Red Queen (Eliza FF).

When: Tuesday March 21 at 7:00

Where: John Ware School gym

Tickets: Available at the door or from cast/ crew

After months of preparation and marketing the day finally arrived. On Wednes-

day February 22nd in conjunction with the national pink shirt anti-bullying day

the Calgary Hitmen hosted over 8000 Calgary students for a special hockey

game. John Ware took 117 grade 7 and 8 students, 6 staff and 4 wonderful parent

volunteers to the first annual Be Brave hockey game. We were entertained with

great music, crowd interactive games and had a front row seat to an exciting 4-3

shootout win for the home town Hitmen. Not only did the Hitmen thrill the spec-

tators but there were also a variety of booths set up on the concourse for our stu-

dents to ask questions and raise awareness to stop bullying in our schools and

through technology. 3 time grey cup champion Randy Chevrier and ice hockey

Olympian Caroline Ouellette spoke from the heart to everyone in attendance

about how they have been affected by bullying and how it is everyone’s respon-

sibility to stop it. It was a fun and informative day where for many it was their

first hockey games and for all many memories were made.

Be Brave for Ani-Bullying

Athletics - Basketball Season Comes to a Close, Badminton Tryouts Begin!

The basketball season has sadly come to an end, but each team experienced great success and should be very proud of their accomplishments this year! Two HUGE congratulations are in order to our Junior Girls and Senior Boys Bas-ketball Teams for making it to their divisional finals and taking the big wins!

Our Junior Girls team improved immensely over their season, and they represented John Ware against AE Cross in the finals. They beat out very strong opponents and we are so proud of their performance this season. Awesome job, girls!

The Junior Boys team had a great season and really improved their skills over the course of the year. They, too, faced many tough opponents throughout the season and put up a good battle in every game. Despite their challeng-es, they came together as a team and had a fun season!

The Senior Girls team had an excellent season as well. They made it to the semi-finals in their division, but unfortu-nately, lost a very close battle to Massey which ended their season. The girls worked great together as a team, and the improvement of each individual player over the course of the season was outstanding!

On Thursday, February 23, 23 John Ware stu-

dents, Ms. Burrows and Ms. Shyiak went on an amazing

journey to the 9th annual My World Leadership Confer-

ence. We joined over 1200 junior high student leaders

who were engaged and inspired to “think globally” and

develop their sense of community as Canada celebrates

150 years. Special keynote speakers were Alvin Law,

Brian Keating and Cowboy Smithx. Students also en-

joyed sessions that featured Christian Hudson, Riley Good

Eagle, Kate McKenzie and Jean-Clause Munyezamu.
