Inside the PowerThe purpose & The plan
We must design, build and illuminate a small 1.5 V light bulb using imagination, knowledge and wind.
Intended to use topics learned in Engineering Fundamentals 152 to generate power
Be creative and imaginative to generate this power
Wind will be the primary source
Johnny had basic design in mind from previous work with windmills.
We used various lightweight woods, metal rod, Plexiglas, copper wire, and magnets as materials.
Standard windmill design with large propellers to maximize the catch of wind
Generator is a small plexi-box wrapped with wire that encases the spinning magnets to produce a current
How it works…The science behind the light
Mechanics
A case of power enhancement.
The windmill's blades are turned by the wind which uses the wind's kinetic energy which is then sent to an electrical generator.
The mill is now ready to produce energy.
ElectricalTechnique of turning mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Generator forces electrical charges to move through an electrical circuit.
This uses the electrical charge already present in wire of its windings.
Efficiencies It’s not really the point…
We calculate the theoretical power using the equation:
Using the following gathered data:
We calculated:
Therefore our efficiency is :

Density of Air 1.204 kg/m3
Windmill Power Experimental 0.04 Watts
What we learnedConstruction issues & a conclusion
We had very little construction issues with this project.
The only minor issue was a packaging faulty with our original pack of wires.
Our simplicity driven idea proved to be easy and effective.
We learned that powering a light bulb is a much simpler task than at first conceived.
