TECHNOLOGY AND ME

A personal timeline of educational technology

Page 2: JohnSandvigTechnology

OVERVIEW My name is John Sandvig. I started school in 1998 in Wahiawa, Hawaii. I graduated from high school in 2011 in

Mililani, Hawaii. I first went to college at UH Manoa in 2011,

and am still there! When I finish my degree, I hope to become a

High School Chemistry Teacher. I also hope to pursue a Master’s Degree, and be able to teach at a community college.

MY DEFINITION OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

is to determine the value of various technologies (i.e. – web tools, handhelds devices) and to be able to utilize them in an effective manner when educating students. It is also to teach both instructor and student how to use specific technologies in a manner that is both ethical and relevant. The goal is to be able to integrate technology into education to the points where the use of technology becomes second nature to both teachers and students.

KINDERGARTEN TECHNOLOGY

When I was in Kindergarten, I don’t remember there being much technology anywhere in the classroom.

I know for certain there was an entire classroom filled with computers (Macs, maybe?) aptly called the “Computer Lab”, but I never got to visit it when I was a mere Kindergartener.

Technology was relatively more expensive in those days than it is now, and thus wasn’t common.

Pretty sure it was one of these bad boys.

HIGH SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY

In High School, technology in classrooms was becoming quite the trend.

A handful of classrooms had SMARTboards, and the teachers made use of them in their classes.

There was a Mac Lab in the school, but could only be used for specific purposes (like a class project).

The iPhone had come out, in its various iterations, so almost everyone had a smartphone on hand; they weren’t allowed to be used in classrooms.

COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY

Everyone has a Laptop and/or smartphone. It’s rare you meet someone who doesn’t have one or the other – or both!

UH Manoa has it’s own service called Laulima; Professors can upload things to it, like announcements, assignments, etc.

Online Courses. Like this class! A plethora of other tools: blogs, iclickers,

presi, google tools (docs, groups), etc.

A VIVID TECHNOLOGY LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Did I mention Laulima? Announcements, Uploads, Assignments,

Grades!! Even a Forum to discuss in!

A TECHNOLOGY I WANT TO USE IN MY CLASSROOM

SMARTboards. Interactive whiteboard. You can draw and erase, but also

manipulate and save! Widely expands the scope of things you can

do when you need to go “old-fashioned”.

MY VISION OF THE CLASSROOM OF THE FUTURE

Education not bound to just the classroom; taking the lessons to your home with technology.

Each student has a smart-device (laptop, phone, tablet) that they can use at a moment’s notice.

Students (as well as teachers) are all effective and ethical users of technology.

Technology is seamlessly integrated into education, to the point where you don’t even notice it.

Page 11: JohnSandvigTechnology

A CHALLENGE FOR TEACHING Ensuring each student

has equal access to technology. This could be hindered by availability of technology or the cost of it.

Teaching students and instructors how to use the technologies effectively and ethically.

Keeping up with the ever-rapid pace of technological innovation.
