Lodge Membership 233 And Growing! The Little Lodge That Does Big Things! “It takes an Army to win a War,” were the words spoken by Grand Lodge Membership and Public Relations Manager, Rick Gathen, at the Elks National Convention. In response to the declining membership that the BPOE has been experiencing over the last 30 years, Rick Gathen presented ideas and opportunities for Lodges to increase and strengthen their memberships. The “Army” he spoke of is the Lodge’s Membership Committee and should include the Exalted Ruler, Lodge Secretary, Leading Knight, Membership Chairperson, and at least one additional person per 100 current members. It is important that these “soldiers” are trained to win the membership battle. First, the Lodge needs to understand the reasons for declining membership. Discovering why lapsation occurs can help reduce the rate. Utilizing a more professional dues invoice, offering online dues payment, sending gentle reminder letters, and making late notices more personal can eliminate many non-paying members. Grand Lodge has a new Indoctrination DVD that will soon be available and a webinar on the Grand Lodge website making the Elks a “true American tradition”. Secondly, we can easily reinstate lapsed members, bringing them back into the Lodge. Thirdly, we should grow our presence in the community and “Share the Pride” with others. Earning a good reputation as a premier charitable organization will make members proud to be Elks. These three easy steps can increase our Lodge membership; everyone must do their part to create a positive impact. In addition to the above insights, I also gained a greater knowledge of what the Elks do for the community. The Hoop Shoot winners and the Most Valuable Scholarship winners made inspiring speeches. I experienced first-hand the enthusiasm and pride of being an Elk among thousands of other Elks as we watched the new Grand Exalted Ruler and the DDGERs be installed. During the Legislative session, we adopted 14 of the 22 resolutions presented. I appreciate having the opportunity to attend the National Convention as the Lodge Exalted Ruler. Your prize must be claimed before the month has ended. That’s all there is too it! You can then use it on any Friday Night. Stay up to date on the lodge's calendar of events! Follow us on FaceBook! Fundraiser for Sierra Merrick Paula Hoover's daughter, Sierra, will be traveling to Haiti in January 2015 for 10 days with a group from BCC called "Have a Heart for Haiti." On August 23, from noon until sold out, we will be hosting a barbeque, bake sale, car wash, bottle drive, and clothing drive to help send her. Any tickets purchased before 8/17 are $7 each for the car wash and barbeque, or $13 combined. After 8/17, tickets are $8 each, or $15 combined. The Closets for Cash truck will also be at the lodge from August 22 nd to the 24 th . Bring down any and all unwanted clothes, shoes, purses, bed sheet, towels, stuffed animals, and soft toys to the lodge and we get fundraising fee for every pound donated. These items then get recycled, donated to developing countries, or even turned in to cleaning cloths. This can add up to a lot of cash for Sierra and the lodge! birthday celebration the first Friday of the month!

In vain we call Joe Maluchnik

Regardless of the paths their lives may have taken,

They are never forgotten, never forsaken. Morning and noon may pass them by,

The light of day fades from the sky,

But ere the shadow of midnight shall fall, The chimes of memory shall summon us all. To speed them a message above all others,

God grant you peace,

Thank you very much to the members that donate baked goods for dessert for our Friday dinners. They always bring their finest and our dinner guests truly enjoy the home baked goodness of their confectionery delights. Thank you again to: Alicia Beck, Holly Belveg, Connie Carle, Rita Christopher, Marie Drankoski, Sharon Flint, Karen Gazda, Paula Hoover, Val Kelley, Audrey LoPesti, Charlotte Maluchnik, Lena Modlo, Kathy Neiss, Marie & Russ Ryan, Tammi Seeley, Pat Smith, Flo Winters & Donna Wright. We thought we might share one of our most requested recipes so you may try it at home: Blueberry Cake 10 oz. miniature marshmallows 1 pkg. yellow cake mix 1 can blueberry pie filling Cover the bottom of a well-greased 9 x 13 inch pan with the bag of mini marshmallows. Prepare cake according to package directions. Pour over marshmallows. Spoon the pie filling over batter. Bake 1 hour in a 325 degree oven. When baked, pie filling goes to the bottom and the marshmallows melt and rise to the top and make a glaze. Several variations served at the Lodge have been: Cherry Pie filling and Chocolate Cake mix, Cherry with yellow cake mix, Apple Pie filling with Spice Cake mix. I call this a “Bake and Take” cake. It travels well right out of the oven.

Did you know…?

-Our JC Elks newsletter costs are presently supplemented by 14 sponsors and 11 booster club members For a yearly fee of $84 for sponsors and $10 for boosters, these generous sponsors and booster club members offset the monthly costs for printing, folding, labeling,

tabbing and mailing our newsletter. Check out our sponsors and support them when you can. -Submitted by Pat and Jerry Smith

-Kathy Tokos was the lucky winner of the Lia Sophia Jewelry Basket valued at $500! This

was a fundraiser for the Lodge. Thanks to all who purchased raffle tickets. Thanks to our bartenders for promoting this opportunity! Thank you to Jennifer Maloney for donating. -Our all-female ritual team is hard at work preparing for the November district ritual contest!

-Wow...our new members are stepping up to volunteer! Bruce (the Lodge Bar Manager) must be thrilled! I know I do not have everyone's names but I promise to recap in our next newsletter. Kim Gates has joined the Bruce Bartender Brigade!
